Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • Korah's Rebellion

    And Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, made bold, and [with him] Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, the sons of Reuben;
  • Korah’s Rebellion

One day Korah son of Izhar, a descendant of Kohath son of Levi, conspired with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, from the tribe of Reuben.
  • and they rose up against Moses, with two hundred and fifty men of the children of Israel, princes of the assembly, summoned to the council, men of renown;
  • They incited a rebellion against Moses, along with 250 other leaders of the community, all prominent members of the assembly.
  • and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said to them, It is enough; for all the assembly, all of them are holy, and Jehovah is among them; and why do ye lift up yourselves above the congregation of Jehovah?
  • They united against Moses and Aaron and said, “You have gone too far! The whole community of Israel has been set apart by the LORD, and he is with all of us. What right do you have to act as though you are greater than the rest of the LORD’s people?”
  • When Moses heard this, he fell on his face.
  • When Moses heard what they were saying, he fell face down on the ground.
  • And he spoke to Korah and to all his band, saying, Even to-morrow will Jehovah make known who is his, and who is holy; and he will cause him to come near to him; and him whom he has chosen, him will he cause to come near to him.
  • Then he said to Korah and his followers, “Tomorrow morning the LORD will show us who belongs to hima and who is holy. The LORD will allow only those whom he selects to enter his own presence.
  • This do: take you censers, Korah, and all his band,
  • Korah, you and all your followers must prepare your incense burners.
  • and put fire therein, and lay incense thereon before Jehovah to-morrow; and it shall be that the man whom Jehovah doth choose, he shall be holy. It is enough, ye sons of Levi!
  • Light fires in them tomorrow, and burn incense before the LORD. Then we will see whom the LORD chooses as his holy one. You Levites are the ones who have gone too far!”
  • And Moses said to Korah, Hear, I pray you, ye sons of Levi!
  • Then Moses spoke again to Korah: “Now listen, you Levites!
  • Is it too little for you, that the God of Israel has separated you from the assembly of Israel, to bring you near to himself to do the work of the tabernacle of Jehovah, and to stand before the assembly to minister to them?
  • Does it seem insignificant to you that the God of Israel has chosen you from among all the community of Israel to be near him so you can serve in the LORD’s Tabernacle and stand before the people to minister to them?
  • -- that he has brought thee near, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee; and seek ye now the priesthood also?
  • Korah, he has already given this special ministry to you and your fellow Levites. Are you now demanding the priesthood as well?
  • For which cause thou and all thy band are banded together against Jehovah; and Aaron, who is he that ye murmur against him?
  • The LORD is the one you and your followers are really revolting against! For who is Aaron that you are complaining about him?”
  • And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; but they said, We will not come up!
  • Then Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they replied, “We refuse to come before you!
  • Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, that thou must make thyself altogether a ruler over us?
  • Isn’t it enough that you brought us out of Egypt, a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us here in this wilderness, and that you now treat us like your subjects?
  • Moreover, thou hast not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up!
  • What’s more, you haven’t brought us into another land flowing with milk and honey. You haven’t given us a new homeland with fields and vineyards. Are you trying to fool these men?b We will not come.”
  • Then Moses was very wroth, and said to Jehovah, Have no regard to their oblation: not one ass have I taken from them, neither have I hurt one of them.
  • Then Moses became very angry and said to the LORD, “Do not accept their grain offerings! I have not taken so much as a donkey from them, and I have never hurt a single one of them.”
  • And Moses said to Korah, Be thou and all thy band before Jehovah, thou, and they, and Aaron, to-morrow.
  • And Moses said to Korah, “You and all your followers must come here tomorrow and present yourselves before the LORD. Aaron will also be here.
  • And take each his censer, and put incense thereon, and present before Jehovah every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; and thou, and Aaron, each his censer.
  • You and each of your 250 followers must prepare an incense burner and put incense on it, so you can all present them before the LORD. Aaron will also bring his incense burner.”
  • And they took each his censer, and put fire on them, and laid incense thereon, and stood before the entrance to the tent of meeting, as well as Moses and Aaron.
  • So each of these men prepared an incense burner, lit the fire, and placed incense on it. Then they all stood at the entrance of the Tabernaclec with Moses and Aaron.
  • And Korah gathered the whole assembly against them to the entrance of the tent of meeting. And the glory of Jehovah appeared to all the assembly.
  • Meanwhile, Korah had stirred up the entire community against Moses and Aaron, and they all gathered at the Tabernacle entrance. Then the glorious presence of the LORD appeared to the whole community,
  • And Jehovah spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,
  • and the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
  • Separate yourselves from the midst of this assembly, and I will consume them in a moment.
  • “Get away from all these people so that I may instantly destroy them!”
  • And they fell on their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh! shall *one* man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with the whole assembly?
  • But Moses and Aaron fell face down on the ground. “O God,” they pleaded, “you are the God who gives breath to all creatures. Must you be angry with all the people when only one man sins?”
  • Moses Separates the People

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • And the LORD said to Moses,
  • Speak unto the assembly, saying, Get you up from about the habitation of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.
  • “Then tell all the people to get away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.”
  • And Moses rose up and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.
  • So Moses got up and rushed over to the tents of Dathan and Abiram, followed by the elders of Israel.
  • And he spoke to the assembly, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye perish in all their sins.
  • “Quick!” he told the people. “Get away from the tents of these wicked men, and don’t touch anything that belongs to them. If you do, you will be destroyed for their sins.”
  • And they got up from the habitation of Koran, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side. And Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood in the entrance of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little ones.
  • So all the people stood back from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Then Dathan and Abiram came out and stood at the entrances of their tents, together with their wives and children and little ones.
  • And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that Jehovah has sent me to do all these deeds, for they are not out of my own heart:
  • And Moses said, “This is how you will know that the LORD has sent me to do all these things that I have done — for I have not done them on my own.
  • if these men die as all men die, and are visited with the visitation of all men, Jehovah has not sent me;
  • If these men die a natural death, or if nothing unusual happens, then the LORD has not sent me.
  • but if Jehovah make a new thing, and the ground open its mouth, and swallow them up, and all that they have, and they go down alive into Sheol, then ye shall know that these men have despised Jehovah.
  • But if the LORD does something entirely new and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them and all their belongings, and they go down alive into the grave,d then you will know that these men have shown contempt for the LORD.”
  • The Earth Swallows Up Korah

And it came to pass when he had ended speaking all these words, that the ground clave apart that was under them.
  • He had hardly finished speaking the words when the ground suddenly split open beneath them.
  • And the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men that belonged to Korah, and all their property.
  • The earth opened its mouth and swallowed the men, along with their households and all their followers who were standing with them, and everything they owned.
  • And they went down, they and all that they had, alive into Sheol, and the earth covered them; and they perished from among the congregation.
  • So they went down alive into the grave, along with all their belongings. The earth closed over them, and they all vanished from among the people of Israel.
  • And all Israel that were round about them fled at their cry; for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up!
  • All the people around them fled when they heard their screams. “The earth will swallow us, too!” they cried.
  • And there came out a fire from Jehovah, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that had presented incense.
  • Then fire blazed forth from the LORD and burned up the 250 men who were offering incense.
  • The Censers Reserved for Holy Use

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • eAnd the LORD said to Moses,
  • Speak to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning; and scatter the fire afar; for they are hallowed,
  • “Tell Eleazar son of Aaron the priest to pull all the incense burners from the fire, for they are holy. Also tell him to scatter the burning coals.
  • the censers of these sinners who have forfeited their life; and they shall make them into broad plates for the covering of the altar; for they presented them before Jehovah, therefore they are hallowed; and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel.
  • Take the incense burners of these men who have sinned at the cost of their lives, and hammer the metal into a thin sheet to overlay the altar. Since these burners were used in the LORD’s presence, they have become holy. Let them serve as a warning to the people of Israel.”
  • And Eleazar the priest took the copper censers, which they that were burnt had presented; and they were made broad plates for a covering of the altar:
  • So Eleazar the priest collected the 250 bronze incense burners that had been used by the men who died in the fire, and the bronze was hammered into a thin sheet to overlay the altar.
  • as a memorial to the children of Israel, that no stranger who is not of the seed of Aaron come near to burn incense before Jehovah, that he be not as Korah, and as his band, -- as Jehovah had said to him through Moses.
  • This would warn the Israelites that no unauthorized person — no one who was not a descendant of Aaron — should ever enter the LORD’s presence to burn incense. If anyone did, the same thing would happen to him as happened to Korah and his followers. So the LORD’s instructions to Moses were carried out.
  • Murmuring and Plague

And the whole assembly of the children of Israel murmured on the morrow against Moses and against Aaron, saying, Ye have killed the people of Jehovah.
  • But the very next morning the whole community of Israel began muttering again against Moses and Aaron, saying, “You have killed the LORD’s people!”
  • And it came to pass, when the assembly was gathered together against Moses and against Aaron, that they looked toward the tent of meeting, and behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of Jehovah appeared.
  • As the community gathered to protest against Moses and Aaron, they turned toward the Tabernacle and saw that the cloud had covered it, and the glorious presence of the LORD appeared.
  • And Moses and Aaron went before the tent of meeting.
  • Moses and Aaron came and stood in front of the Tabernacle,
  • And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • and the LORD said to Moses,
  • Get you up from the midst of this assembly, and I will consume them in a moment. And they fell on their faces.
  • “Get away from all these people so that I can instantly destroy them!” But Moses and Aaron fell face down on the ground.
  • And Moses said to Aaron, Take the censer, and put fire thereon from off the altar, and lay on incense, and carry it quickly to the assembly, and make atonement for them; for there is wrath gone out from Jehovah: the plague is begun.
  • And Moses said to Aaron, “Quick, take an incense burner and place burning coals on it from the altar. Lay incense on it, and carry it out among the people to purify them and make them right with the LORD.f The LORD’s anger is blazing against them — the plague has already begun.”
  • And Aaron took as Moses had said, and ran into the midst of the congregation; and behold, the plague had begun among the people; and he put on incense, and made atonement for the people.
  • Aaron did as Moses told him and ran out among the people. The plague had already begun to strike down the people, but Aaron burned the incense and purifiedg the people.
  • And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed.
  • He stood between the dead and the living, and the plague stopped.
  • Now they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand seven hundred, besides them that had died because of the matter of Korah.
  • But 14,700 people died in that plague, in addition to those who had died in the affair involving Korah.
  • And Aaron returned to Moses to the entrance of the tent of meeting; and the plague was stayed.
  • Then because the plague had stopped, Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the Tabernacle.
