Darby Bible Translation

New American Standard Bible

  • Baal Worship at Peor

And Israel abode in Shittim; and the people began to commit fornication with the daughters of Moab.
  • The Sin of Peor

While Israel remained at Shittim, the people began to play the harlot with the daughters of Moab.
  • And they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods.
  • For they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.
  • And Israel joined himself to Baal-Peor; and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel.
  • So Israel joined themselves to Baal of Peor, and the LORD was angry against Israel.
  • And Jehovah said to Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up to Jehovah before the sun, that the fierce anger of Jehovah may be turned away from Israel.
  • The LORD said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight before the LORD, so that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel.”
  • And Moses said to the judges of Israel, Slay every one his men that have joined themselves to Baal-Peor.
  • So Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Each of you slay his men who have joined themselves to Baal of Peor.”
  • Phinehas Kills Zimri and Cozbi

And behold, a man of the children of Israel came and brought a Midianitish woman to his brethren, in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of the whole assembly of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the entrance of the tent of meeting.
  • Then behold, one of the sons of Israel came and brought to his relatives a Midianite woman, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, while they were weeping at the doorway of the tent of meeting.
  • And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, and rose up from among the assembly, and took a javelin in his hand,
  • When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he arose from the midst of the congregation and took a spear in his hand,
  • and he went after the man of Israel into the tent-chamber, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. And the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
  • and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and pierced both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman, through the body. So the plague on the sons of Israel was checked.
  • And those that died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.
  • Those who died by the plague were 24,000.
  • Phinehas' Reward

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

  • The Zeal of Phinehas

Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
  • Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
  • “Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned away My wrath from the sons of Israel in that he was jealous with My jealousy among them, so that I did not destroy the sons of Israel in My jealousy.
  • Therefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace!
  • “Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give him My covenant of peace;
  • And he shall have it, and his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.
  • and it shall be for him and his descendants after him, a covenant of a perpetual priesthood, because he was jealous for his God and made atonement for the sons of Israel.’”
  • And the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, the prince of a father's house of the Simeonites.
  • Now the name of the slain man of Israel who was slain with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, a leader of a father’s household among the Simeonites.
  • And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was tribal head of a father's house in Midian.
  • The name of the Midianite woman who was slain was Cozbi the daughter of Zur, who was head of the people of a father’s household in Midian.
  • A Warning against the Midianites

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
  • Harass the Midianites, and smite them,
  • “Be hostile to the Midianites and strike them;
  • for they have harassed you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague because of the matter of Peor.
  • for they have been hostile to you with their tricks, with which they have deceived you in the affair of Peor and in the affair of Cozbi, the daughter of the leader of Midian, their sister who was slain on the day of the plague because of Peor.”
