Baal Worship at Peor

And Israel abode in Shittim; and the people began to commit fornication with the daughters of Moab.

1

А Ізраїль осів у Саттімі. І народ почав чинити розпусту з дочками Моава.

And they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods.

Вони покликали їх до жертв своїх ідолів, і народ їв їхні жертви, і поклонявся їхнім ідолам, —

And Israel joined himself to Baal-Peor; and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel.

Ізраїль посвятився Веелфеґорові. Тож Господь запалав гнівом на Ізраїля.

4

And Jehovah said to Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up to Jehovah before the sun, that the fierce anger of Jehovah may be turned away from Israel.

І Господь сказав Мойсеєві: Візьми проводирів народу, і подай приклад з них задля Господа перед сонцем — і гнів обурення Господа відвернеться від Ізраїля.

And Moses said to the judges of Israel, Slay every one his men that have joined themselves to Baal-Peor.

Тож Мойсей сказав ізраїльським племенам: Кожен нехай вб’є свого члена сім’ї, який посвятився Веелфеґорові!

Phinehas Kills Zimri and Cozbi

And behold, a man of the children of Israel came and brought a Midianitish woman to his brethren, in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of the whole assembly of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the entrance of the tent of meeting.

Аж ось прийшов чоловік з ізраїльських синів і привів свого брата до мідійки — перед Мойсеєм і перед усією громадою ізраїльських синів, — вони ж плакали біля входу в намет свідчення.

And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, and rose up from among the assembly, and took a javelin in his hand,

А Фінеес, син Елеазара, сина Аарона-священика, побачивши це, піднявся з-посеред громади і, узявши у свою руку короткого списа,

and he went after the man of Israel into the tent-chamber, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. And the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

увійшов за чоловіком-ізраїльтянином усередину і проколов обох, чоловіка-ізраїльтянина і жінку — через її нутро. І пошесть серед ізраїльських синів припинилася.

And those that died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.

А тих, хто помер від пошесті, було двадцять чотири тисячі.

Phinehas' Reward

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

Тоді Господь промовив до Мойсея, кажучи:

Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

Фінеес, син Елеазара, сина Аарона-священика, зупинив Мій гнів на ізраїльських синів, коли Я дійсно виявив ревнощі до них, і Я у Своїх ревнощах повністю не вигубив ізраїльських синів.

12

Therefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace!

Таким чином скажи: Ось Я даю йому завіт миру!

13

And he shall have it, and his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.

І буде для нього і для його нащадків після нього завіт вічного священства — за те, що виявив ревність за свого Бога і звершив викуплення за ізраїльських синів!

14

And the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, the prince of a father's house of the Simeonites.

А ім’я ураженого чоловіка-ізраїльтянина, який був убитий разом з мідійкою, — Замврі, син Сали, князь з родини по батьківській лінії тих, які від Симеона.

15

And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was tribal head of a father's house in Midian.

А ім’я вбитої жінки-мідійки, дочки Сура, князя оммотського племені — Хасві, він — з родини по батьківській лінії тих, які від Мадіана.

A Warning against the Midianites

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

І промовив Господь до Мойсея, проголошуючи: Повідом ізраїльським синам, наказуючи:

17

Harass the Midianites, and smite them,

17

Ворогуйте з мадіанітянами і розгроміть їх!

18

for they have harassed you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague because of the matter of Peor.

18

Бо вони підступно виявляють ворожість до вас, так як підступно чинили з вами через Фоґора і через Хасві — дочку мадіямського вождя, свою сестру, яка була вбита в день пошесті через Фоґора.
