Darby Bible Translation

New King James Version

  • Vengeance on Midian

    And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • Vengeance on the Midianites

    And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
  • Avenge the children of Israel upon the Midianites; afterwards shalt thou be gathered unto thy peoples.
  • “Take vengeance on the Midianites for the children of Israel. Afterward you shall be gathered to your people.”
  • And Moses spoke to the people, saying, Arm from amongst you men for military service, that they go against Midian to execute Jehovah's vengeance upon Midian.
  • So Moses spoke to the people, saying, “Arm some of yourselves for war, and let them go against the Midianites to take vengeance for the Lord on Midian.
  • Of every tribe a thousand, of all the tribes of Israel, shall ye send to the war.
  • A thousand from each tribe of all the tribes of Israel you shall send to the war.”
  • And there were levied out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand by tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.
  • So there were recruited from the divisions of Israel one thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.
  • And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand by the tribe, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, and the holy instruments, even the alarm-trumpets in his hand.
  • Then Moses sent them to the war, one thousand from each tribe; he sent them to the war with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, with the holy articles and the signal trumpets in his hand.
  • And they warred against Midian, as Jehovah had commanded Moses, and slew all the males.
  • And they warred against the Midianites, just as the Lord commanded Moses, and they killed all the males.
  • And they slew the kings of Midian, besides the others slain, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian; and Balaam the son of Beor they slew with the sword.
  • They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of those who were killed — Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. Balaam the son of Beor they also killed with the sword.
  • And the children of Israel took the women of Midian captives, and their little ones, and took for a spoil all their cattle and all their flocks and all their goods;
  • And the children of Israel took the women of Midian captive, with their little ones, and took as spoil all their cattle, all their flocks, and all their goods.
  • and all their cities in their settlements and all their encampments they burned with fire.
  • They also burned with fire all the cities where they dwelt, and all their forts.
  • And they took all the booty, and all the prey, of man and of cattle;
  • And they took all the spoil and all the booty — of man and beast.
  • and they brought to Moses and Eleazar the priest, and to the assembly of the children of Israel, the captives and the prey and the booty, to the camp in the plains of Moab, which are by the Jordan of Jericho.
  • Return from the War

    Then they brought the captives, the booty, and the spoil to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the children of Israel, to the camp in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho.
  • And Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the princes of the assembly went forth to meet them outside the camp.
  • And Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation, went to meet them outside the camp.
  • And Moses was wroth with the officers of the army, with the captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, who came from the service of the war;
  • But Moses was angry with the officers of the army, with the captains over thousands and captains over hundreds, who had come from the battle.
  • and Moses said to them, Have ye saved all the women alive?
  • And Moses said to them: “Have you kept all the women alive?
  • Lo, these, through the counsel of Balaam, caused the children of Israel to commit sin against Jehovah in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague on the assembly of Jehovah.
  • Look, these women caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to trespass against the Lord in the incident of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the Lord.
  • And now slay every male among the little ones, and slay every woman that hath known man by lying with him,
  • Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known a man intimately.
  • but all the children among the women that have not known lying with a man, keep alive for yourselves.
  • But keep alive for yourselves all the young girls who have not known a man intimately.
  • And encamp outside the camp seven days; whoever hath killed a person, and whoever hath touched any slain; ye shall purify yourselves on the third day, and on the seventh day, you and your captives.
  • And as for you, remain outside the camp seven days; whoever has killed any person, and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves and your captives on the third day and on the seventh day.
  • And every garment, and every vessel of skin, and all work of goat's hair, and every utensil of wood shall ye purify.
  • Purify every garment, everything made of leather, everything woven of goats’ hair, and everything made of wood.”
  • And Eleazar the priest said to the men of war that had gone to the battle, This is the statute of the law which Jehovah hath commanded Moses.
  • Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had gone to the battle, “This is the [a]ordinance of the law which the Lord commanded Moses:
  • Only the gold, and the silver, the copper, the iron, the tin, and the lead,
  • Only the gold, the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead,
  • everything that passeth through the fire, ye shall make it go through the fire, and it shall be clean; only it shall be purified with the water of separation; and everything that cannot pass through the fire ye shall make go through the water.
  • everything that can endure fire, you shall put through the fire, and it shall be clean; and it shall be purified with the water of purification. But all that cannot endure fire you shall put through water.
  • And ye shall wash your garments on the seventh day, and ye shall be clean; and afterwards ye may come into the camp.
  • And you shall wash your clothes on the seventh day and be clean, and afterward you may come into the camp.”
  • Division of the Spoils

    And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • Division of the Plunder

    Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
  • Take the sum of the prey that was taken, of man and of cattle, thou, and Eleazar the priest, and the chief fathers of the assembly;
  • “Count up the plunder that was [b]taken — of man and beast — you and Eleazar the priest and the chief fathers of the congregation;
  • and divide the prey into halves, between them that conducted the war, who went out to the battle, and the whole assembly.
  • and divide the plunder into two parts, between those who took part in the war, who went out to battle, and all the congregation.
  • And thou shalt levy a tribute for Jehovah of the men of war who went out to the army, one soul of five hundred of the persons, and of the oxen, and of the asses, and of the small cattle.
  • And levy a [c]tribute for the Lord on the men of war who went out to battle: one of every five hundred of the persons, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep;
  • Of their half shall ye take it, and give it unto Eleazar the priest, for a heave-offering of Jehovah.
  • take it from their half, and give it to Eleazar the priest as a heave offering to the Lord.
  • And of the children of Israel's half, thou shalt take one portion of fifty, of the persons, of the oxen, of the asses, and of the small cattle, of every [kind of] beasts, and thou shalt give them unto the Levites, who keep the charge of the tabernacle of Jehovah.
  • And from the children of Israel’s half you shall take one of every fifty, drawn from the persons, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep, from all the livestock, and give them to the Levites who [d]keep charge of the tabernacle of the Lord.”
  • And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as Jehovah had commanded Moses.
  • So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.
  • And the prey, the rest of the spoil, which the men of war had taken, was six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep,
  • The booty remaining from the plunder, which the men of war had taken, was six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep,
  • and seventy-two thousand oxen,
  • seventy-two thousand cattle,
  • and sixty-one thousand asses,
  • sixty-one thousand donkeys,
  • and of human persons, of the women that had not known lying with a man, all the persons were thirty-two thousand.
  • and thirty-two thousand persons in all, of women who had not known a man intimately.
  • And the half, the portion of them that had gone out to the war, was in number three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,
  • And the half, the portion for those who had gone out to war, was in number three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep;
  • and the tribute for Jehovah of the sheep was six hundred and seventy-five;
  • and the Lord’s [e]tribute of the sheep was six hundred and seventy-five.
  • and the oxen were thirty-six thousand, and the tribute thereof for Jehovah, seventy-two;
  • The cattle were thirty-six thousand, of which the Lord’s tribute was seventy-two.
  • and the asses were thirty thousand five hundred, and the tribute thereof for Jehovah, sixty-one;
  • The donkeys were thirty thousand five hundred, of which the Lord’s tribute was sixty-one.
  • and the human persons were sixteen thousand, of whom the tribute for Jehovah was thirty-two persons.
  • The persons were sixteen thousand, of which the Lord’s tribute was thirty-two persons.
  • And Moses gave the tribute of Jehovah's heave-offering to Eleazar the priest, as Jehovah had commanded Moses.
  • So Moses gave the tribute which was the Lord’s heave offering to Eleazar the priest, as the Lord commanded Moses.
  • And of the children of Israel's half, which Moses had divided, [taking it] from the men that served in the war,
  • And from the children of Israel’s half, which Moses separated from the men who fought —
  • (now the half belonging to the assembly was of the sheep, three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred,
  • now the half belonging to the congregation was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,
  • and thirty-six thousand oxen,
  • thirty-six thousand cattle,
  • and thirty thousand five hundred asses,
  • thirty thousand five hundred donkeys,
  • and sixteen thousand human persons,)
  • and sixteen thousand persons —
  • ... of the children of Israel's half, Moses took one portion of fifty, of man and of cattle, and gave them to the Levites who kept the charge of the tabernacle of Jehovah; as Jehovah had commanded Moses.
  • and from the children of Israel’s half Moses took one of every fifty, drawn from man and beast, and gave them to the Levites, who kept charge of the tabernacle of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.
  • The Voluntary Offering

    And the officers who were over the thousands of the host, the captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, came near to Moses,
  • Then the officers who were over thousands of the army, the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, came near to Moses;
  • and they said to Moses, Thy servants have taken the sum of the men of war who were under our hand, and there is not one man of us lacking.
  • and they said to Moses, “Your servants have taken a count of the men of war who are under our command, and not a man of us is missing.
  • So we present the offering of Jehovah, that which each one hath found, jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces, to make atonement for our souls before Jehovah.
  • Therefore we have brought an offering for the Lord, what every man found of ornaments of gold: armlets and bracelets and signet rings and earrings and necklaces, to make [f]atonement for ourselves before the Lord.”
  • And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of them, all manner of wrought jewels.
  • So Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from them, all the fashioned ornaments.
  • And all the gold of the heave-offering that they offered to Jehovah was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels, from the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds.
  • And all the gold of the offering that they offered to the Lord, from the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.
  • (The men of war had taken spoil each one for himself.)
  • (The men of war had taken spoil, every man for himself.)
  • And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tent of meeting, as a memorial for the children of Israel before Jehovah.
  • And Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tabernacle of meeting as a memorial for the children of Israel before the Lord.
