Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • The Twelve Apostles

    And having called to [him] his twelve disciples, he gave them power over unclean spirits, so that they should cast them out, and heal every disease and every bodily weakness.
  • Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

    Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them authority to cast out evila spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness.
  • Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the [son] of Zebedee, and John his brother;
  • Here are the names of the twelve apostles:
    first, Simon (also called Peter),
    then Andrew (Peter’s brother),
    James (son of Zebedee),
    John (James’s brother),
  • Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the tax-gatherer; James the [son] of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, who was surnamed Thaddaeus;
  • Philip,
    Bartholomew,
    Thomas,
    Matthew (the tax collector),
    James (son of Alphaeus),
    Thaddaeus,b
  • Simon the Cananaean, and Judas the Iscariote, who also delivered him up.
  • Simon (the zealotc),
    Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed him).
  • The Ministry of the Twelve

    These twelve Jesus sent out when he had charged them, saying, Go not off into [the] way of [the] nations, and into a city of Samaritans enter ye not;
  • Jesus sent out the twelve apostles with these instructions: “Don’t go to the Gentiles or the Samaritans,
  • but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
  • but only to the people of Israel — God’s lost sheep.
  • And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of the heavens has drawn nigh.
  • Go and announce to them that the Kingdom of Heaven is near.d
  • Heal [the] infirm, [raise the dead], cleanse lepers, cast out demons: ye have received gratuitously, give gratuitously.
  • Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!
  • Do not provide yourselves with gold, or silver, or brass, for your belts,
  • “Don’t take any money in your money belts — no gold, silver, or even copper coins.
  • nor scrip for the way, nor two body coats, nor sandals, nor a staff: for the workman is worthy of his nourishment.
  • Don’t carry a traveler’s bag with a change of clothes and sandals or even a walking stick. Don’t hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve to be fed.
  • But into whatsoever city or village ye enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and there remain till ye go forth.
  • “Whenever you enter a city or village, search for a worthy person and stay in his home until you leave town.
  • And as ye enter into a house salute it.
  • When you enter the home, give it your blessing.
  • And if the house indeed be worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.
  • If it turns out to be a worthy home, let your blessing stand; if it is not, take back the blessing.
  • And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, as ye go forth out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.
  • If any household or town refuses to welcome you or listen to your message, shake its dust from your feet as you leave.
  • Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in judgment-day than for that city.
  • I tell you the truth, the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah will be better off than such a town on the judgment day.
  • Comfort in Persecution

    Behold, *I* send you as sheep in the midst of wolves; be therefore prudent as the serpents, and guileless as the doves.
  • “Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves.
  • But beware of men; for they will deliver you up to sanhedrims, and scourge you in their synagogues;
  • But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in the synagogues.
  • and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the nations.
  • You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me.e
  • But when they deliver you up, be not careful how or what ye shall speak; for it shall be given to you in that hour what ye shall speak.
  • When you are arrested, don’t worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give you the right words at the right time.
  • For *ye* are not the speakers, but the Spirit of your Father which speaks in you.
  • For it is not you who will be speaking — it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
  • But brother shall deliver up brother to death, and father child; and children shall rise up against parents and shall put them to death;
  • “A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed.
  • and ye shall be hated of all on account of my name. But he that has endured to [the] end, *he* shall be saved.
  • And all nations will hate you because you are my followers.f But everyone who endures to the end will be saved.
  • But when they persecute you in this city, flee to the other; for verily I say to you, Ye shall not have completed the cities of Israel until the Son of man be come.
  • When you are persecuted in one town, flee to the next. I tell you the truth, the Son of Mang will return before you have reached all the towns of Israel.
  • The disciple is not above his teacher, nor the bondman above his lord.
  • “Studentsh are not greater than their teacher, and slaves are not greater than their master.
  • [It is] sufficient for the disciple that he should become as his teacher, and the bondman as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more those of his household?
  • Students are to be like their teacher, and slaves are to be like their master. And since I, the master of the household, have been called the prince of demons,i the members of my household will be called by even worse names!
  • Fearing God Alone

    Fear them not therefore; for there is nothing covered which shall not be revealed, and secret which shall not be known.
  • “But don’t be afraid of those who threaten you. For the time is coming when everything that is covered will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all.
  • What I say to you in darkness speak in the light, and what ye hear in the ear preach upon the houses.
  • What I tell you now in the darkness, shout abroad when daybreak comes. What I whisper in your ear, shout from the housetops for all to hear!
  • And be not afraid of those who kill the body, but cannot kill the soul; but fear rather him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
  • “Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.j
  • Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall to the ground without your Father;
  • What is the price of two sparrows — one copper coink? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it.
  • but of you even the hairs of the head are all numbered.
  • And the very hairs on your head are all numbered.
  • Fear not therefore; *ye* are better than many sparrows.
  • So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.
  • Confessing Christ

    Every one therefore who shall confess me before men, *I* also will confess him before my Father who is in [the] heavens.
  • “Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.
  • But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will *I* also deny before my Father who is in [the] heavens.
  • But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.
  • The Sword of the Gospel

    Do not think that I have come to send peace upon the earth: I have not come to send peace, but a sword.
  • “Don’t imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth! I came not to bring peace, but a sword.
  • For I have come to set a man at variance with his father, and the daughter with her mother, and the daughter-in-law with her mother-in-law;
  • ‘I have come to set a man against his father,
    a daughter against her mother,
    and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
  • and they of his household [shall be] a man's enemies.
  • Your enemies will be right in your own household!’l
  • Take up Your Cross

    He who loves father or mother above me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter above me is not worthy of me.
  • “If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine.
  • And he who does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.
  • If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine.
  • He that finds his life shall lose it, and he who has lost his life for my sake shall find it.
  • If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.
  • The Reward of Service

    He that receives you receives me, and he that receives me receives him that sent me.
  • “Anyone who receives you receives me, and anyone who receives me receives the Father who sent me.
  • He that receives a prophet in the name of a prophet, shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man, shall receive a righteous man's reward.
  • If you receive a prophet as one who speaks for God,m you will be given the same reward as a prophet. And if you receive righteous people because of their righteousness, you will be given a reward like theirs.
  • And whosoever shall give to drink to one of these little ones a cup of cold [water] only, in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.
  • And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.”
