John's Inquiry

And it came to pass when Jesus had finished commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and preach in their cities.

But John, having heard in the prison the works of the Christ, sent by his disciples,

Іван же, почувши у в’язниці про діла Христа, послав своїх учнів

and said to him, Art *thou* the coming [one]? or are we to wait for another?

запитати Його: Чи Ти є Той, Хто йде, чи нам чекати іншого?

4

And Jesus answering said to them, Go, report to John what ye hear and see.

4

А Ісус у відповідь сказав їм: Ідіть і сповістіть Іванові, що чуєте й бачите:

5

Blind [men] see and lame walk; lepers are cleansed, and deaf hear; and dead are raised, and poor have glad tidings preached to them:

5

сліпі прозрівають, криві ходять, прокажені очищаються і глухі чують, мертві встають, убогим звіщається Євангеліє;

6

and blessed is whosoever shall not be offended in me.

6

щасливий той, хто не спокуситься через Мене.

Jesus Testifies about John

But as they went [away], Jesus began to say to the crowds concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? a reed moved about by the wind?

Коли ті відходили, Ісус почав говорити людям про Івана: На що ви ходили подивитися в пустелю? На тростину, яку хитає вітер?

8

But what went ye out to see? a man clothed in delicate raiment? behold, those who wear delicate things are in the houses of kings.

Або що ходили побачити? Людину, вдягнену в м’які шати? Та ж ті, хто носить м’який одяг, живуть у царських палацах.

But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say to you, and more than a prophet:

Кого ж ви вийшли побачити? Пророка? Так, кажу вам: більше, ніж пророка!

10

this is he of whom it is written, Behold, *I* send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.

Це той, про кого написано: Ось Я посилаю Мого ангела перед Твоє обличчя, який приготує Тобі дорогу перед Тобою.

11

Verily I say to you, that there is not arisen among [the] born of women a greater than John the baptist. But he who is a little one in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he.

Запевняю вас: не було між народженими від жінок більшого за Івана Хрестителя, але найменший у Царстві Небесному більший від нього.

12

But from the days of John the baptist until now, the kingdom of the heavens is taken by violence, and [the] violent seize on it.

12

Від днів Івана Хрестителя і дотепер Царство Небесне здобувається силою, і ті, хто застосовує силу, здобувають його.

13

For all the prophets and the law have prophesied unto John.

13

Адже всі Пророки й Закон пророкували до Івана;

14

And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, who is to come.

14

і коли хочете знати, він — Ілля, який має прийти.

15

He that has ears to hear, let him hear.

15

Хто має вуха, нехай слухає.

16

But to whom shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the markets, which, calling to their companions,

З ким Мені порівняти цей рід? Він подібний до дітей, які сидять на майданах і гукають до інших,

17

say, We have piped to you, and ye have not danced: we have mourned to you, and ye have not wailed.

17

кажучи: Ми грали вам на сопілці, та ви не танцювали; ми голосили, та ви не ридали.

18

For John has come neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a demon.

18

Бо прийшов Іван, який не їсть, не п’є, а вони кажуть: Біса має.

19

The Son of man has come eating and drinking, and they say, Behold, a man [that is] eating and wine-drinking, a friend of tax-gatherers, and of sinners: -- and wisdom has been justified by her children.

19

Прийшов Син Людський, Який їсть і п’є, а вони кажуть: Ось ця людина ненажера і п’яниця, друг митників та грішників. Тож виправдалася премудрість власними ділами.

20

Woe to the Unrepentant

Then began he to reproach the cities in which most of his works of power had taken place, because they had not repented.

20

Тоді почав [Ісус] докоряти містам, в яких сталося найбільше Його чудес, за те, що вони не покаялися:

21

Woe to thee, Chorazin! woe to thee Bethsaida! for if the works of power which have taken place in you, had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they had long ago repented in sackcloth and ashes.

Горе тобі, Хоразине! Горе тобі, Витсаїдо! Бо якби в Тирі й Сидоні сталися ті чудеса, які сталися у вас, вони давно покаялися б у волосяниці та в попелі.

22

But I say to you, that it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in judgment-day than for you.

22

Однак кажу вам: Тиру й Сидону буде легше в день суду, ніж вам.

23

And *thou*, Capernaum, who hast been raised up to heaven, shalt be brought down even to hades. For if the works of power which have taken place in thee, had taken place in Sodom, it had remained until this day.

23

І ти, Капернауме, хіба до неба піднесешся? До аду провалишся, бо коли би чудеса, що сталися в тобі, відбулися в Содомі, він існував би донині.

24

But I say to you, that it shall be more tolerable for [the] land of Sodom in judgment-day than for thee.

24

Тож кажу вам, що землі Содомській легше буде в день суду, ніж тобі.

25

Rest for the Weary

At that time, Jesus answering said, I praise thee, Father, Lord of the heaven and of the earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to babes.

25

Того часу, відповідаючи, Ісус сказав: Славлю Тебе, Отче, Господи неба й землі, що втаїв Ти це від премудрих та розумних і відкрив те немовлятам.

26

Yea, Father, for thus has it been well-pleasing in thy sight.

26

Так, Отче, бо то було Тобі до вподоби.

27

All things have been delivered to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son but the Father, nor does any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom the Son may be pleased to reveal [him].

27

Усе передав Мені Мій Отець, і ніхто не знає Сина, тільки Отець; ані Отця ніхто не знає, лише Син — і той, кому тільки бажає Син відкрити.

28

Come to me, all ye who labour and are burdened, and *I* will give you rest.

28

Прийдіть до Мене всі втомлені та обтяжені, — і Я заспокою вас!

29

Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest to your souls;

29

Візьміть Моє ярмо на себе і навчіться від Мене, бо Я лагідний і покірний серцем, — і знайдете спокій своїм душам.

30

for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

30

Адже Моє ярмо любе, і Мій тягар легкий.
