Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • Tradition and Vain Worship

    Then the scribes and Pharisees from Jerusalem come up to Jesus, saying,
  • Jesus Teaches about Inner Purity

    Some Pharisees and teachers of religious law now arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus. They asked him,
  • Why do thy disciples transgress what has been delivered by the ancients? for they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.
  • “Why do your disciples disobey our age-old tradition? For they ignore our tradition of ceremonial hand washing before they eat.”
  • But he answering said to them, Why do *ye* also transgress the commandment of God on account of your traditional teaching?
  • Jesus replied, “And why do you, by your traditions, violate the direct commandments of God?
  • For God commanded saying, Honour father and mother; and, He that speaks ill of father or mother, let him die the death.
  • For instance, God says, ‘Honor your father and mother,’a and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’b
  • But *ye* say, Whosoever shall say to his father or mother, It is a gift, whatsoever [it be] by which [received] from me thou wouldest be profited:
  • But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’
  • and he shall in no wise honour his father or his mother; and ye have made void the commandment of God on account of your traditional teaching.
  • In this way, you say they don’t need to honor their parents.c And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition.
  • Hypocrites! well has Esaias prophesied about you, saying,
  • You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote,
  • This people honour me with the lips, but their heart is far away from me;
  • ‘These people honor me with their lips,
    but their hearts are far from me.
  • but in vain do they worship me, teaching [as] teachings commandments of men.
  • Their worship is a farce,
    for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’d
  • What Defiles a Man

    And having called to [him] the crowd, he said to them, Hear and understand:
  • Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “Listen,” he said, “and try to understand.
  • Not what enters into the mouth defiles the man; but what goes forth out of the mouth, this defiles the man.
  • It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth.”
  • Then his disciples, coming up, said to him, Dost thou know that the Pharisees, having heard this word, have been offended?
  • Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you realize you offended the Pharisees by what you just said?”
  • But he answering said, Every plant which my heavenly Father has not planted shall be rooted up.
  • Jesus replied, “Every plant not planted by my heavenly Father will be uprooted,
  • Leave them alone; they are blind leaders of blind: but if blind lead blind, both will fall into a ditch.
  • so ignore them. They are blind guides leading the blind, and if one blind person guides another, they will both fall into a ditch.”
  • And Peter answering said to him, Expound to us this parable.
  • Then Peter said to Jesus, “Explain to us the parable that says people aren’t defiled by what they eat.”
  • But he said, Are *ye* also still without intelligence?
  • “Don’t you understand yet?” Jesus asked.
  • Do ye not yet apprehend, that everything that enters into the mouth finds its way into the belly, and is cast forth into the draught?
  • “Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer.
  • but the things which go forth out of the mouth come out of the heart, and those defile man.
  • But the words you speak come from the heart — that’s what defiles you.
  • For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witnessings, blasphemies;
  • For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.
  • these are the things which defile man; but the eating with unwashen hands does not defile man.
  • These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you.”
  • The Faith of the Canaanite Woman

    And Jesus, going forth from thence, went away into the parts of Tyre and Sidon;

  • The Faith of a Gentile Woman

    Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre and Sidon.
  • and lo, a Canaanitish woman, coming out from those borders, cried [to him] saying, Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is miserably possessed by a demon.
  • A Gentilee woman who lived there came to him, pleading, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! For my daughter is possessed by a demon that torments her severely.”
  • But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came to [him] and asked him, saying, Dismiss her, for she cries after us.
  • But Jesus gave her no reply, not even a word. Then his disciples urged him to send her away. “Tell her to go away,” they said. “She is bothering us with all her begging.”
  • But he answering said, I have not been sent save to the lost sheep of Israel's house.
  • Then Jesus said to the woman, “I was sent only to help God’s lost sheep — the people of Israel.”
  • But she came and did him homage, saying, Lord, help me.
  • But she came and worshiped him, pleading again, “Lord, help me!”
  • But he answering said, It is not well to take the bread of the children and cast it to the dogs.
  • Jesus responded, “It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.”
  • But she said, Yea, Lord; for even the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from the table of their masters.
  • She replied, “That’s true, Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fall beneath their masters’ table.”
  • Then Jesus answering said to her, O woman, thy faith [is] great. Be it to thee as thou desirest. And her daughter was healed from *that* hour.
  • “Dear woman,” Jesus said to her, “your faith is great. Your request is granted.” And her daughter was instantly healed.
  • The Feeding of the Four Thousand

    And Jesus, going away from thence, came towards the sea of Galilee, and he went up into the mountain and sat down there;

  • Jesus Heals Many People

    Jesus returned to the Sea of Galilee and climbed a hill and sat down.
  • and great crowds came to him, having with them lame, blind, dumb, crippled, and many others, and they cast them at his feet, and he healed them:
  • A vast crowd brought to him people who were lame, blind, crippled, those who couldn’t speak, and many others. They laid them before Jesus, and he healed them all.
  • so that the crowds wondered, seeing dumb speaking, crippled sound, lame walking, and blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.
  • The crowd was amazed! Those who hadn’t been able to speak were talking, the crippled were made well, the lame were walking, and the blind could see again! And they praised the God of Israel.
  • But Jesus, having called his disciples to [him], said, I have compassion on the crowd, because they have stayed with me already three days and they have not anything they can eat, and I would not send them away fasting lest they should faint on the way.

  • Jesus Feeds Four Thousand

    Then Jesus called his disciples and told them, “I feel sorry for these people. They have been here with me for three days, and they have nothing left to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry, or they will faint along the way.”
  • And his disciples say to him, Whence should we have so many loaves in [the] wilderness as to satisfy so great a crowd?
  • The disciples replied, “Where would we get enough food here in the wilderness for such a huge crowd?”
  • And Jesus says to them, How many loaves have ye? But they said, Seven, and a few small fishes.
  • Jesus asked, “How much bread do you have?”
    They replied, “Seven loaves, and a few small fish.”
  • And he commanded the crowds to lie down on the ground;
  • So Jesus told all the people to sit down on the ground.
  • and having taken the seven loaves and the fishes, having given thanks, he broke [them] and gave [them] to his disciples, and the disciples to the crowd.
  • Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, thanked God for them, and broke them into pieces. He gave them to the disciples, who distributed the food to the crowd.
  • And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was over and above of the fragments seven baskets full;
  • They all ate as much as they wanted. Afterward, the disciples picked up seven large baskets of leftover food.
  • but they that ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.
  • There were 4,000 men who were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children.
  • And, having dismissed the crowds, he went on board ship and came to the borders of Magadan.
  • Then Jesus sent the people home, and he got into a boat and crossed over to the region of Magadan.
