New King James Version

  • The Parable of the Banquet

And Jesus answering spoke to them again in parables, saying,
  • The Parable of the Wedding Feast

And Jesus answered and spoke to them again by parables and said:
  • The kingdom of the heavens has become like a king who made a wedding feast for his son,
  • “The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son,
  • and sent his bondmen to call the persons invited to the wedding feast, and they would not come.
  • and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding; and they were not willing to come.
  • Again he sent other bondmen, saying, Say to the persons invited, Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fatted beasts are killed, and all things ready; come to the wedding feast.
  • Again, he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatted cattle are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding.” ’
  • But they made light of it, and went, one to his own land, and another to his commerce.
  • But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his business.
  • And the rest, laying hold of his bondmen, ill-treated and slew [them].
  • And the rest seized his servants, treated them [a]spitefully, and killed them.
  • And [when] the king [heard of it he] was wroth, and having sent his forces, destroyed those murderers and burned their city.
  • But when the king heard about it, he was furious. And he sent out his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.
  • Then he says to his bondmen, The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy;
  • Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.
  • go therefore into the thoroughfares of the highways, and as many as ye shall find invite to the wedding feast.
  • Therefore go into the highways, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding.’
  • And those bondmen went out into the highways, and brought together all as many as they found, both evil and good; and the wedding feast was furnished with guests.
  • So those servants went out into the highways and gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good. And the wedding hall was filled with guests.
  • And the king, having gone in to see the guests, beheld there a man not clothed with a wedding garment.
  • “But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment.
  • And he says to him, [My] friend, how camest thou in here not having on a wedding garment? But he was speechless.
  • So he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless.
  • Then said the king to the servants, Bind him feet and hands, and take him away, and cast him out into the outer darkness: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.
  • Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, [b]take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
  • For many are called ones, but few chosen ones.
  • “For many are called, but few are chosen.”
  • Paying Taxes to Caesar

Then went the Pharisees and held a council how they might ensnare him in speaking.
  • The Pharisees: Is It Lawful to Pay Taxes to Caesar?

Then the Pharisees went and plotted how they might entangle Him in His talk.
  • And they send out to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that thou art true and teachest the way of God in truth, and carest not for any one, for thou regardest not men's person;
  • And they sent to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that You are true, and teach the way of God in truth; nor do You care about anyone, for You do not [c]regard the person of men.
  • tell us therefore what thou thinkest: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?
  • Tell us, therefore, what do You think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”
  • But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said, Why tempt ye me, hypocrites?
  • But Jesus [d]perceived their wickedness, and said, “Why do you test Me, you hypocrites?
  • Shew me the money of the tribute. And they presented to him a denarius.
  • Show Me the tax money.”
So they brought Him a denarius.
  • And he says to them, Whose [is] this image and superscription?
  • And He said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?”
  • They say to him, Caesar's. Then he says to them, Pay then what is Caesar's to Caesar, and what is God's to God.
  • They said to Him, “Caesar’s.”
And He said to them, “Render[e] therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
  • And when they heard [him], they wondered, and left him, and went away.
  • When they had heard these words, they marveled, and left Him and went their way.
  • Sadducees Question the Resurrection

On that day came to him Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection; and they demanded of him,
  • The Sadducees: What About the Resurrection?

The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and asked Him,
  • saying, Teacher, Moses said, If any one die, not having children, his brother shall marry his wife and shall raise up seed to his brother.
  • saying: “Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.
  • Now there were with us seven brethren; and the first having married died, and not having seed, left his wife to his brother.
  • Now there were with us seven brothers. The first died after he had married, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother.
  • In like manner also the second and the third, unto the seven.
  • Likewise the second also, and the third, even to the seventh.
  • And last of all the woman also died.
  • Last of all the woman died also.
  • In the resurrection therefore of which of the seven shall she be wife, for all had her?
  • Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.”
  • And Jesus answering said to them, Ye err, not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God.
  • Jesus answered and said to them, “You are [f]mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God.
  • For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as angels of God in heaven.
  • For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels [g]of God in heaven.
  • But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read what was spoken to you by God, saying,
  • But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying,
  • *I* am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not God of [the] dead, but of [the] living.
  • ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
  • And when the crowds heard [it] they were astonished at his doctrine.
  • And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His teaching.
  • The Greatest Commandment

But the Pharisees, having heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, were gathered together.
  • The Scribes: Which Is the First Commandment of All?

But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together.
  • And one of them, a lawyer, demanded, tempting him, and saying,
  • Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying,
  • Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?
  • “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”
  • And he said to him, Thou shalt love [the] Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy understanding.
  • Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
  • This is [the] great and first commandment.
  • This is the first and great commandment.
  • And [the] second is like it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
  • And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
  • On these two commandments the whole law and the prophets hang.
  • On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
  • Whose Son is the Christ?

And the Pharisees being gathered together, Jesus demanded of them,
  • Jesus: How Can David Call His Descendant Lord?

While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
  • saying, What think ye concerning the Christ? whose son is he? They say to him, David's.
  • saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?”
They said to Him, “The Son of David.”
  • He says to them, How then does David in Spirit call him Lord, saying,
  • He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying:
  • The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand until I put thine enemies under thy feet?
  • ‘The Lord said to my Lord,
    “Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool” ’?
  • If therefore David call him Lord, how is he his son?
  • If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his Son?”
  • And no one was able to answer him a word, nor did any one dare from that day to question him any more.
  • And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore.
