The Plot to Kill Jesus

And it came to pass when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples,

1

Ye know that after two days the passover takes place, and the Son of man is delivered up to be crucified.

2

„Ви знаєте, що через два дні буде Па́сха, — і Лю́дський Син буде виданий на розп'я́ття“.

Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together to the palace of the high priest who was called Caiaphas,

Тоді первосвященики, і книжники, і старші народу зібралися в домі первосвященика, званого Кайя́фою,

4

and took counsel together in order that they might seize Jesus by subtlety and kill him;

4

і радилися, щоб пі́дступом взяти Ісуса й забити.

but they said, Not in the feast, that there be not a tumult among the people.

І вони говорили: „Та не в свято, щоб бува колотнеча в наро́ді не сталась“.

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

But Jesus being in Bethany, in Simon the leper's house,

Коли ж Ісус був у Віфа́нії, у домі Си́мона прокаже́ного,

a woman, having an alabaster flask of very precious ointment, came to him and poured it out upon his head as he lay at table.

7

підійшла одна жінка до Нього, маючи аляба́строву пляшечку дорогоцінного ми́ра, — і вилила на Його голову, як сидів при столі Він.

But the disciples seeing it became indignant, saying, To what end [was] this waste?

8

Як побачили ж учні це, то обурилися та й сказали: „На́що таке марнотра́тство?

9

for this might have been sold for much and been given to the poor.

9

Бо дорого можна було б це продати, і віддати убогим“.

10

But Jesus knowing [it] said to them, Why do ye trouble the woman? for she has wrought a good work toward me.

10

Зрозумівши Ісус, промовив до них: „Чого при́крість ви робите жінці? Вона ж добрий учинок зробила Мені.

11

For ye have the poor always with you, but me ye have not always.

11

Бо вбогих ви маєте за́вжди з собою, а Мене не постійно ви маєте.

12

For in pouring out this ointment on my body, she has done it for my burying.

12

Бо, виливши миро оце на тіло Моє, вона те вчинила на по́хорон Мій.

13

Verily I say to you, Wheresoever these glad tidings may be preached in the whole world, that also which this [woman] has done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.

13

Поправді кажу́ вам: де тільки оця Єва́нгелія проповідувана буде в цілому світі, — на пам'ятку їй буде сказане й те, що зробила вона!“

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

Then one of the twelve, he who was called Judas Iscariote, went to the chief priests

Тоді один із Дванадцятьох, званий Юдою Іскаріотським, подався до первосвящеників,

15

and said, What are ye willing to give me, and *I* will deliver him up to you? And they appointed to him thirty pieces of silver.

15

і сказав: „Що́ хочете дати мені, — і я вам Його видам?“ І вони йому виплатили тридцять срібняків.

16

And from that time he sought a good opportunity that he might deliver him up.

16

І він відтоді шукав слу́шного ча́су, щоб видати Його.

17

The Last Supper

Now on the first [day] of [the feast of] unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus, saying, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover?

17

А першого дня Опрі́сноків учні підійшли до Ісуса й сказали Йому: „Де́ хочеш, щоб ми приготува́ли пасху спожити Тобі?

18

And he said, Go into the city unto such a one, and say to him, The Teacher says, My time is near, I will keep the passover in thy house with my disciples.

18

А Він відказав: „Ідіть до такого то в місто, і перекажіть йому: каже Вчитель: час Мій близьки́й, — справлю Пасху з Своїми учнями в тебе“.

19

And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the passover.

19

І учні зробили, як звелів їм Ісус, і зачали́ пасху готува́ти.

20

And when the evening was come he lay down at table with the twelve.

20

А коли настав вечір, Він із дванадцятьма учнями сів за стіл.

21

And as they were eating he said, Verily I say to you, that one of you shall deliver me up.

21

І, як вони споживали, Він сказав: „Поправді кажу вам, що один із вас видасть Мене“.

22

And being exceedingly grieved they began to say to him, each of them, Is it *I*, Lord?

22

А вони засмутилися тяжко, і кожен із них став питати Його: „Чи не я то, о Господи?“

23

But he answering said, He that dips his hand with me in the dish, *he* it is who shall deliver me up.

23

А Він відповів і промовив: „Хто руку свою вмочить у миску зо Мною, той видасть Мене.

24

The Son of man goes indeed, according as it is written concerning him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is delivered up; it were good for that man if he had not been born.

24

Людський Син справді йде, як про Нього написано; але горе тому чоловікові, що видасть Лю́дського Сина! Було́ б краще йому, коли б той чоловік не родився!“

25

And Judas, who delivered him up, answering said, Is it *I*, Rabbi? He says to him, *Thou* hast said.

25

Юда ж, зрадник Його, відповів і сказав: „Чи не я то, Учителю?“ Відказав Він йому: „Ти сказав“.

26

The Lord's Supper Instituted

And as they were eating, Jesus, having taken [the] bread and blessed, broke [it] and gave [it] to the disciples, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.

26

Як вони ж споживали, Ісус узяв хліб, і́ поблагословив, поламав, і давав Своїм учням, і сказав: „Прийміть, споживайте, це — тіло Моє“.

27

And having taken [the] cup and given thanks, he gave [it] to them, saying, Drink ye all of it.

27

А взявши чашу, і подяку вчинивши, Він подав їм і сказав: „Пийте з неї всі,

28

For this is my blood, that of the [new] covenant, that shed for many for remission of sins.

28

бо це — кров Моя Ново́го Заповіту, що за багатьох проливається на відпу́щення гріхів!

29

But I say to you, that I will not at all drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in the kingdom of my Father.

29

Кажу́ ж вам, що віднині не питиму Я від оцього плоду виноградного аж до дня, коли з вами його нови́м питиму в Царстві Мого Отця“.

30

And having sung a hymn, they went out to the mount of Olives.

30

А коли відспівали вони, то на го́ру Оливну пішли.

31

Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial

Then saith Jesus to them, All *ye* shall be offended in me during this night. For it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.

31

Промовляє тоді їм Ісус: „Усі ви через Мене споку́ситеся ночі цієї. Бо написано: „Уражу́ Па́стиря, — і розпоро́шаться вівці отари“.

32

But after that I shall be risen, I will go before you to Galilee.

32

По воскре́сенні ж Своїм Я вас ви́переджу в Галілеї“.

33

And Peter answering said to him, If all shall be offended in thee, *I* will never be offended.

33

А Петро відповів і сказав Йому: „Якби й усі спокуси́лись про Тебе, — я не спокушу́ся ніко́ли“.

34

Jesus said to him, Verily I say to thee, that during this night, before [the] cock shall crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

34

Промовив до нього Ісус: „Поправді кажу́ тобі, що ночі цієї, перше ніж заспіває півень, — відречешся ти тричі від Мене“.

35

Peter says to him, If I should needs die with thee, I will in no wise deny thee. Likewise said all the disciples also.

35

Говорить до Нього Петро: „Коли б мені навіть умерти з Тобою, — я не відречуся від Тебе!“ Так сказали й усі учні.

36

Jesus Prays at Gethsemane

Then Jesus comes with them to a place called Gethsemane, and says to the disciples, Sit here until I go away and pray yonder.

36

Тоді з ними приходить Ісус до місцевости, званої Гефсима́нія, і промовляє до учнів: „Посидьте ви тут, аж поки піду́ й помолюся отам“.

37

And taking with [him] Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and deeply depressed.

37

І, взявши Петра й двох синів Зеведе́євих, зачав сумувати й тужити.

38

Then he says to them, My soul is very sorrowful even unto death; remain here and watch with me.

38

Тоді промовляє до них: „Обго́рнена сумом смертельним душа Моя! Залиші́ться тут, і попильнуйте зо Мною“.

39

And going forward a little he fell upon his face, praying and saying, My Father, if it be possible let this cup pass from me; but not as *I* will, but as *thou* [wilt].

39

І, трохи далі пройшовши, упав Він долі́лиць, та молився й благав: „Отче Мій, коли можна, нехай обмине ця чаша Мене. Та проте, — не як Я хо́чу, а як Ти“.

40

And he comes to the disciples and finds them sleeping, and says to Peter, Thus ye have not been able to watch one hour with me?

40

І, вернувшись до учнів, знайшов їх, що спали, і промовив Петрові: „Отак, — не змогли ви й однієї години попильнувати зо Мною?

41

Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed [is] ready, but the flesh weak.

41

Пильнуйте й моліться, щоб не впасти на спробу, — бадьо́рий бо дух, але немічне тіло“.

42

Again going away a second time he prayed saying, My Father, if this cannot pass [from me] unless I drink it, thy will be done.

42

Відійшовши ще вдруге, Він молився й благав: „Отче Мій, як ця чаша не може минути Мене, щоб не пити її, — нехай станеться воля Твоя!“

43

And coming he found them again sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

43

І, прийшовши, знову знайшов їх, що спали, бо зважні́ли їм очі були.

44

And leaving them, he went away again and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

44

І, залиши́вши їх, знов пішов, і помолився втре́тє, те саме слово промовивши.

45

Then he comes to the disciples and says to them, Sleep on now and take your rest; behold, the hour has drawn nigh, and the Son of man is delivered up into the hands of sinners.

45

Потому приходить до учнів і їм промовляє: „Ви ще далі спите й спочиваєте? Ось година набли́зилась, — і до рук грішникам виданий буде Син Лю́дський.

46

Arise, let us go; behold, he that delivers me up has drawn nigh.

46

Уставайте, ходім, — ось наблизи́вся Мій зра́дник!“

47

Jesus' Betrayal and Arrest

And while he was yet speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great crowd with swords and sticks from the chief priests and elders of the people.

47

І коли Він іще говорив, аж ось прийшов Юда, один із Дванадцятьо́х, а з ним люду багато від первосвящеників і старших наро́ду з мечами та ки́ями.

48

Now he that delivered him up had given them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, he it is: seize him.

48

А зрадник Його дав був знака їм, кажучи: „Кого поцілую, то Він, — беріть Його“.

49

And immediately coming up to Jesus he said, Hail, Rabbi, and covered him with kisses.

49

І зараз Він підійшов до Ісуса й сказав: Раді́й, Учителю!“ І поцілував Його.

50

But Jesus said to him, [My] friend, for what purpose art thou come? Then coming up they laid hands upon Jesus and seized him.

50

Ісус же йому відказав: „Чого, друже, прийшов ти?“ Тоді приступили та руки наклали на Ісуса, — і схопи́ли Його.

51

And behold, one of those with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, and smiting the bondman of the high priest took off his ear.

51

А ось один із тих, що з Ісусом були́, витягнув руку, і меча свого ви́хопив та й рубону́в раба первосвященика, — і відтяв йому вухо.

52

Then saith Jesus to him, Return thy sword to its place; for all who take the sword shall perish by the sword.

52

Тоді промовляє до нього Ісус: „Сховай свого меча в його місце, бо всі, хто ві́зьме меча, — від меча і загинуть.

53

Or thinkest thou that I cannot now call upon my Father, and he will furnish me more than twelve legions of angels?

53

Чи ти ду́маєш, що не мо́жу тепер упросити Свого Отця, — і Він дасть Мені зараз більше дванадцяти леґіо́нів анголі́в?

54

How then should the scriptures be fulfilled that thus it must be?

54

Але як має збутись Писа́ння, що так статися мусить?“

55

In that hour Jesus said to the crowds, Are ye come out as against a robber with swords and sticks to take me? I sat daily [with you] teaching in the temple, and ye did not seize me.

55

Тієї години промовив Ісус до наро́ду: „Немов на розбійника вийшли з мечами та ки́ями, щоб узяти Мене! Я щоденно у храмі сидів і навчав, — і Мене не взяли́ ви.

56

But all this is come to pass that the scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled. Then all the disciples left him and fled.

56

Це ж сталось усе, щоб збулися писа́ння пророків“. Усі учні тоді залишили Його й повтікали.

57

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin

Now they that had seized Jesus led [him] away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.

57

А вони схопи́ли Ісуса, і повели́ до первосвященика Кайяфи, де зібралися книжники й старші.

58

And Peter followed him at a distance, even to the palace of the high priest, and entering in sat with the officers to see the end.

58

Петро ж зда́лека йшов услід за Ним аж до дво́ру первосвященика, і, ввійшовши всере́дину, сів із слу́жбою, щоб бачити кінець.

59

And the chief priests and the elders and the whole sanhedrim sought false witness against Jesus, so that they might put him to death.

59

А первосвященики та ввесь синедріо́н шукали на Ісуса неправдивого свідчення, щоб смерть заподіяти Йому,

60

And they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. But at the last two false witnesses came forward

60

і не знахо́дили, хоч кривосвідків багато підхо́дило. Аж ось накінець з'явилися двоє,

61

and said, *He* said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and in three days build it.

61

і сказали: „Він говорив: Я можу зруйнувати храм Божий, — і за три дні збудувати його“.

62

And the high priest standing up said to him, Answerest thou nothing? What do these witness against thee?

62

Тоді первосвященик устав і до Нього сказав: „Ти нічого не відповідаєш на те, що свідчать су́проти Тебе?“

63

But Jesus was silent. And the high priest answering said to him, I adjure thee by the living God that thou tell us if *thou* art the Christ the Son of God.

63

Ісус же мовчав. І первосвященик сказав Йому: „Заприсягаю Тебе Живим Богом, щоб нам Ти сказав, — чи Христос Ти, Син Божий?“

64

Jesus says to him, *Thou* hast said. Moreover, I say to you, From henceforth ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.

Промовляє до нього Ісус: „Ти сказав... А навіть повім вам: відтепе́р ви побачите Лю́дського Сина, що сидітиме право́руч сили Божої, і на хмарах небесних прихо́дитиме!“

65

Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He has blasphemed: what need have we any more of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard the blasphemy.

Тоді первосвященик розде́р одежу свою та й сказав: „Він богознева́жив! На́що нам іще свідки потрібні? Ось ви чули тепер Його богознева́гу!

66

What think ye? And they answering said, He is liable to the penalty of death.

66

Як вам здається?“ Вони ж відповіли та сказали: „Повинен умерти!“

67

Then they spit in his face, and buffeted him, and some struck him with the palms of their hand,

67

Тоді стали плювати на обличчя Йому, та бити по що́ках Його, інші ж ки́ями били,

68

saying, Prophesy to us, Christ, Who is it who struck thee?

68

і казали: „Пророкуй нам, Христе́, хто́ то вдарив Тебе?“

69

Peter Denies Jesus

But Peter sat without in the palace-court; and a maid came to him, saying, And *thou* wast with Jesus the Galilaean.

69

А Петро перед домом сидів на подвір'ї. І приступила до Нього служни́ця одна та й сказала: „І ти був з Ісусом Галіле́янином!“

70

But he denied before all, saying, I do not know what thou sayest.

70

А він перед всіма́ відрікся, сказавши: „Не відаю я, що ти кажеш“.

71

And when he had gone out into the entrance, another [maid] saw him, and says to those there, This [man] also was with Jesus the Nazaraean.

71

А коли до воріт він підхо́див, побачила інша його та й сказала приявним там людям: „Оцей був з Ісусом Назаряни́ном!“

72

And again he denied with an oath: I do not know the man.

72

І він зно́ву відрікся та став присягатись: „Не знаю Цього Чоловіка!“

73

And after a little, those who stood [there], coming to [him], said to Peter, Truly *thou* too art of them, for also thy speech makes thee manifest.

73

Підійшли ж трохи згодом присутні й сказали Петрові: „І ти справді з отих, та й мова твоя виявляє тебе“.

74

Then he began to curse and to swear, I know not the man. And immediately [the] cock crew.

74

Тоді він став клясти́сь та божитись: „Не знаю Цього́ Чоловіка!“ І заспівав півень хвилі тієї.

75

And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, who had said [to him], Before [the] cock crow thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went forth without, and wept bitterly.

75

І згадав Петро сказане слово Ісусове: „Перше ніж заспіває півень, — відречешся ти тричі від Мене“. І, вийшовши звідти, він гірко заплакав.
