Darby Bible Translation

New American Standard Bible

  • Jesus Delivered to Pilate

And when it was morning all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus so that they might put him to death.
  • Judas’s Remorse

    Now when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus to put Him to death;
  • And having bound him they led him away, and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate, the governor.
  • and they bound Him, and led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate the governor.
  • Judas Hangs Himself

Then Judas, who delivered him up, seeing that he had been condemned, filled with remorse, returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders,
  • Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
  • saying, I have sinned [in] having delivered up guiltless blood. But they said, What is that to us? see *thou* [to that].
  • saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? See to that yourself!”
  • And having cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, he left the place, and went away and hanged himself.
  • And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself.
  • And the chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, It is not lawful to cast them into the Corban, since it is [the] price of blood.
  • The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood.”
  • And having taken counsel, they bought with them the field of the potter for a burying-ground for strangers.
  • And they conferred together and with the money bought the Potter’s Field as a burial place for strangers.
  • Wherefore that field has been called Blood-field unto this day.
  • For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.
  • Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremias the prophet, saying, And I took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was set a price on, whom [they who were] of the sons of Israel had set a price on,
  • Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “AND THEY TOOK THE THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER, THE PRICE OF THE ONE WHOSE PRICE HAD BEEN SET by the sons of Israel;
  • and they gave them for the field of the potter, according as [the] Lord commanded me.
  • AND THEY GAVE THEM FOR THE POTTER’S FIELD, AS THE LORD DIRECTED ME.”
  • Jesus Before Pilate

But Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor questioned him, saying, Art *thou* the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, Thou sayest.

  • Jesus before Pilate

Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And Jesus said to him, “It is as you say.”
  • And when he was accused of the chief priests and the elders, he answered nothing.
  • And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did not answer.
  • Then says Pilate to him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?
  • Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?”
  • And he answered him not so much as one word, so that the governor wondered exceedingly.
  • And He did not answer him with regard to even a single charge, so the governor was quite amazed.
  • The Crowd Chooses Barabbas

Now at [the] feast the governor was accustomed to release one prisoner to the crowd, whom they would.
  • Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the people any one prisoner whom they wanted.
  • And they had then a notable prisoner, named Barabbas.
  • At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas.
  • They therefore being gathered together, Pilate said to them, Whom will ye that I release to you, Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?
  • So when the people gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”
  • For he knew that they had delivered him up through envy.
  • For he knew that because of envy they had handed Him over.
  • But, as he was sitting on the judgment-seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that righteous [man]; for I have suffered to-day many things in a dream because of him.
  • While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him.”
  • But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds that they should beg for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.
  • But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to put Jesus to death.
  • And the governor answering said to them, Which of the two will ye that I release unto you? And they said, Barabbas.
  • But the governor said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.”
  • Pilate says to them, What then shall I do with Jesus, who is called Christ? They all say, Let him be crucified.
  • Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Crucify Him!”
  • And the governor said, What evil then has he done? But they cried more than ever, saying, Let him be crucified.
  • And he said, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they kept shouting all the more, saying, “Crucify Him!”
  • Pilate Washes his Hands

And Pilate, seeing that it availed nothing, but that rather a tumult was arising, having taken water, washed his hands before the crowd, saying, I am guiltless of the blood of this righteous one: see *ye* [to it].
  • When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this Man’s blood; see to that yourselves.”
  • And all the people answering said, His blood [be] on us and on our children.
  • And all the people said, “His blood shall be on us and on our children!”
  • Then he released to them Barabbas; but Jesus, having scourged [him], he delivered up that he might be crucified.
  • Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
  • The Soldiers Mock Jesus

Then the soldiers of the governor, having taken Jesus with [them] to the praetorium, gathered against him the whole band,

  • Jesus Is Mocked

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him.
  • and having taken off his garment, put on him a scarlet cloak;
  • They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.
  • and having woven a crown out of thorns, they put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand; and, bowing the knee before him, they mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
  • And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
  • And having spit upon him, they took the reed and beat [him] on his head.
  • They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head.
  • And when they had mocked him, they took the cloak off him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him away to crucify.
  • After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.
  • The Crucifixion

And as they went forth they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name; him they compelled to go [with them] that he might bear his cross.
  • As they were coming out, they found a man of Cyrene named Simon, whom they pressed into service to bear His cross.
  • And having come to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a skull,

  • The Crucifixion

And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull,
  • they gave to him to drink vinegar mingled with gall; and having tasted [it], he would not drink.
  • they gave Him wine to drink mixed with gall; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink.
  • And having crucified him, they parted his clothes amongst [themselves], casting lots.
  • And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments among themselves by casting lots.
  • And sitting down, they kept guard over him there.
  • And sitting down, they began to keep watch over Him there.
  • And they set up over his head his accusation written: This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.
  • And above His head they put up the charge against Him which read, “THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
  • Then are crucified with him two robbers, one on the right hand and one on the left.
  • At that time two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left.
  • But the passers-by reviled him, shaking their heads
  • And those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads
  • and saying, Thou that destroyest the temple and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou art Son of God, descend from the cross.
  • and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”
  • [And] in like manner the chief priests also, mocking, with the scribes and elders, said,
  • In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying,
  • He saved others, himself he cannot save. He is King of Israel: let him descend now from the cross, and we will believe on him.
  • “He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him.
  • He trusted upon God; let him save him now if he will [have] him. For he said, I am Son of God.
  • “HE TRUSTS IN GOD; LET GOD RESCUE Him now, IF HE DELIGHTS IN HIM; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”
  • And the robbers also who had been crucified with him cast the same reproaches on him.
  • The robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same words.
  • The Death of Jesus

    Now from [the] sixth hour there was darkness over the whole land until [the] ninth hour;
  • Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour.
  • but about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
  • About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?” that is, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?”
  • And some of those who stood there, when they heard [it], said, This [man] calls for Elias.
  • And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, began saying, “This man is calling for Elijah.”
  • And immediately one of them running and getting a sponge, having filled [it] with vinegar and fixed [it] on a reed, gave him to drink.
  • Immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink.
  • But the rest said, Let be; let us see if Elias comes to save him.
  • But the rest of them said, “Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him.”
  • And Jesus, having again cried with a loud voice, gave up the ghost.
  • And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
  • And lo, the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom, and the earth was shaken, and the rocks were rent,
  • And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split.
  • and the tombs were opened; and many bodies of the saints fallen asleep arose,
  • The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;
  • and going out of the tombs after his arising, entered into the holy city and appeared unto many.
  • and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many.
  • But the centurion, and they who were with him on guard over Jesus, seeing the earthquake and the things that took place, feared greatly, saying, Truly this [man] was Son of God.
  • Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
  • And there were there many women beholding from afar off, who had followed Jesus from Galilee ministering to him,
  • Many women were there looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee while ministering to Him.
  • among whom was Mary of Magdala, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
  • Among them was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
  • The Burial of Jesus

Now when even was come there came a rich man of Arimathaea, his name Joseph, who also himself was a disciple to Jesus.

  • Jesus Is Buried

When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus.
  • *He*, going to Pilate, begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given up.
  • This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him.
  • And Joseph having got the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
  • And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
  • and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn in the rock; and having rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, went away.
  • and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away.
  • But Mary of Magdala was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the sepulchre.
  • And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the grave.
  • The Guard at the Tomb

Now on the morrow, which is after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees came together to Pilate,
  • Now on the next day, the day after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate,
  • saying, Sir, we have called to mind that that deceiver said when he was still alive, After three days I arise.
  • and said, “Sir, we remember that when He was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I am to rise again.’
  • Command therefore that the sepulchre be secured until the third day, lest his disciples should come and steal him away, and say to the people, He is risen from the dead; and the last error shall be worse than the first.
  • “Therefore, give orders for the grave to be made secure until the third day, otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.”
  • And Pilate said to them, Ye have a watch: go, secure it as well as ye know how.
  • Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how.”
  • And they went and secured the sepulchre, having sealed the stone, with the watch [besides].
  • And they went and made the grave secure, and along with the guard they set a seal on the stone.
