The Mission of John the Baptist

Now in those days comes John the baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

В те дни пришёл Иоанн Креститель, проповедовавший в пустыне Иудейской.

and saying, Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn nigh.

Он говорил: "Покайтесь, ибо Царство Небесное близко".

For this is he who has been spoken of through Esaias the prophet, saying, Voice of him that crieth in the wilderness: prepare ye the way of [the] Lord, make straight his paths.

Это о нём говорил пророк Исаия: "Голос раздаётся в пустыне, восклицая: "Подготовьте путь Господу, проложите Ему тропу прямую".

And John himself had his garment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins, and his nourishment was locusts and wild honey.

Одежда Иоанна была из верблюжьей шерсти, а подпоясывался он широким кожаным ремнём. Питался же он саранчой и диким мёдом.

Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the country round the Jordan,

В то время люди отовсюду приходили послушать его: из Иерусалима, из провинции Иудеи и из всех селений Иордана.

and were baptised by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

Иоанн крестил их в водах реки Иордан, и они исповедовались в своих грехах.

But seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, Offspring of vipers, who has forewarned you to flee from the coming wrath?

Увидев, что много фарисеев и саддукеев пришло, чтобы принять от него крещение, он сказал им: "Отродья змеиные! Кто предупредил вас, чтобы вы бежали от приближающегося гнева Божьего?

Produce therefore fruit worthy of repentance.

And do not think to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for [our] father; for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.

And already the axe is applied to the root of the trees; every tree therefore not producing good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire.

Топор уже готов рубить деревья. Всякое дерево, которое не даёт хорошие плоды, будет срублено и брошено в огонь.

*I* indeed baptise you with water to repentance, but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not fit to bear; *he* shall baptise you with [the] Holy Spirit and fire;

Я крещу водой в знак покаяния. Но тот, Кто придёт после меня, сильнее меня. Я не достоин даже нести Его сандалии. Он будет крестить вас огнём и Святым Духом.

whose winnowing fan [is] in his hand, and he shall thoroughly purge his threshing-floor, and shall gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

В руке Его будет лопата, которой Он отделит зерно от мякины. Он соберёт хорошее зерно в Свою житницу, а мякину сожжёт на неугасимом огне".

The Baptism of Jesus

Then comes Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptised of him;

В то время Иисус пришёл из Галилеи к реке Иордан. Он пришёл к Иоанну, ибо хотел, чтобы Иоанн крестил Его.

but John urgently forbad him, saying, *I* have need to be baptised of thee; and comest *thou* to me?

Но Иоанн попытался удержать Его, говоря: "Я должен креститься у Тебя, так почему же Ты пришёл ко мне?"

But Jesus answering said to him, Suffer [it] now; for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffers him.

В ответ Иисус сказал ему: "Пусть пока будет так, ибо положено нам выполнить всё, что назначено Богом". Тогда Иоанн дал Ему креститься.

16

And Jesus, having been baptised, went up straightway from the water, and lo, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him:

Иисус крестился, а когда Он вышел из воды, небеса разверзлись перед Ним, и Он увидел Духа Божьего, спускавшегося на Него, подобно голубю.

and behold, a voice out of the heavens saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I have found my delight.

И голос с небес провозгласил: "Вот Сын Мой возлюбленный, к Которому Я благоволю".
