The Sermon on the Mount

But seeing the crowds, he went up into the mountain, and having sat down, his disciples came to him;

and, having opened his mouth, he taught them, saying,

The Beatitudes

Blessed [are] the poor in spirit, for *theirs* is the kingdom of the heavens.

3

Блаженні убогі духом, бо їхнє Царство Небесне.

4

Blessed they that mourn, for *they* shall be comforted.

4

Блаженні ті, хто плаче, бо вони будуть потішені.

5

Blessed the meek, for *they* shall inherit the earth.

5

Блаженні лагідні, бо вони успадкують землю.

6

Blessed they who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for *they* shall be filled.

Блаженні голодні й спраглі праведності, бо вони наситяться.

7

Blessed the merciful, for *they* shall find mercy.

Блаженні милосердні, бо вони помилувані будуть.

Blessed the pure in heart, for *they* shall see God.

Блаженні чисті серцем, бо вони Бога побачать.

Blessed the peace-makers, for *they* shall be called sons of God.

Блаженні миротворці, бо вони синами Божими названі будуть.

Blessed they who are persecuted on account of righteousness, for *theirs* is the kingdom of the heavens.

Blessed are ye when they may reproach and persecute you, and say every wicked thing against you, lying, for my sake.

Блаженні ви, коли будуть вас зневажати та переслідувати, і наговорюватимуть на вас усяке лукаве [слово], обмовляючи вас за Мене.

Rejoice and exult, for your reward is great in the heavens; for thus have they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Радійте й веселіться, бо велика нагорода ваша на небесах, адже так само переслідували пророків, які були перед вами.

Salt and Light

*Ye* are the salt of the earth; but if the salt have become insipid, wherewith shall it be salted? It is no longer fit for anything but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot by men.

Ви — сіль землі. Якщо сіль втратить силу, то як зробити її солоною? Нінащо вона вже не буде більше придатна, хіба щоб викинути геть, аби топтали її люди.

*Ye* are the light of the world: a city situated on the top of a mountain cannot be hid.

14

Ви — світло для світу. Не можна сховати міста, що стоїть на горі.

15

Nor do [men] light a lamp and put it under the bushel, but upon the lamp-stand, and it shines for all who are in the house.

15

І не запалюють світильника, аби поставити його під посудину, але ставлять на свічник, щоби світив усім, хто в домі.

16

Let your light thus shine before men, so that they may see your upright works, and glorify your Father who is in the heavens.

16

Тож нехай сяє ваше світло перед людьми, щоб вони побачили ваші добрі діла й прославили Отця вашого, Який на небесах.

Jesus Fulfills the Law

Think not that I am come to make void the law or the prophets; I am not come to make void, but to fulfil.

17

Не думайте, що Я прийшов відмінити Закон або Пророків. Я не прийшов відмінити, але сповнити.

18

For verily I say unto you, Until the heaven and the earth pass away, one iota or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law till all come to pass.

18

Запевняю [1] вас: доки будуть існувати небо й земля, жодна йота, жодна риска із Закону не зникне, — усе збудеться.

19

Whosoever then shall do away with one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of the heavens; but whosoever shall practise and teach [them], *he* shall be called great in the kingdom of the heavens.

Якщо хтось порушить одну із цих найменших заповідей і так навчить людей, — він найменшим назветься в Царстві Небесному, а хто виконає і навчить, той великим назветься в Царстві Небесному.

20

For I say unto you, that unless your righteousness surpass [that] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of the heavens.

Тож кажу вам, що коли ваша праведність не перевищить праведності книжників [2] і фарисеїв [3] , то не ввійдете до Царства Небесного.

21

Anger and Reconciliation

Ye have heard that it was said to the ancients, Thou shalt not kill; but whosoever shall kill shall be subject to the judgment.

Ви чули, що було сказано прадавнім: Не вбивай, а коли хто вб’є, той підлягає суду.

22

But *I* say unto you, that every one that is lightly angry with his brother shall be subject to the judgment; but whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be subject to [be called before] the sanhedrim; but whosoever shall say, Fool, shall be subject to the penalty of the hell of fire.

А Я кажу вам, що кожний, хто гнівається на брата свого [безпідставно], підпадає під суд. Якщо хто скаже на свого брата: рака [4] (виродок), — той підлягає верховному суду. А хто скаже: дурний, — той підпадає під вогняну геєну [5].

If therefore thou shouldest offer thy gift at the altar, and there shouldest remember that thy brother has something against thee,

Отже, якщо принесеш свій дар до жертовника і там пригадаєш, що твій брат має щось проти тебе,

leave there thy gift before the altar, and first go, be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

залиши там свій дар перед жертовником, піди спершу помирися зі своїм братом, а тоді вже приходь і принось свій дар.

25

Make friends with thine adverse party quickly, whilst thou art in the way with him; lest some time the adverse party deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

Домовляйся швидко зі своїм противником, доки ти з ним на дорозі, щоби противник не видав тебе судді, а суддя [тебе не видав] слузі й не кинули тебе до в’язниці.

Verily I say to thee, Thou shalt in no wise come out thence till thou hast paid the last farthing.

26

Запевняю тебе: не вийдеш звідти, доки не віддаси останнього кодранта [6].

27

Adultery

Ye have heard that it has been said, Thou shalt not commit adultery.

27

Ви чули, що було сказано: Не чини перелюбу.

28

But *I* say unto you, that every one who looks upon a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

28

А Я кажу вам, що кожний, хто погляне на жінку, щоби пожадати її, той уже вчинив перелюб з нею у своєму серці.

29

But if thy right eye be a snare to thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell.

Якщо ж твоє праве око спокушає тебе, — вийми його і кинь геть від себе, бо краще для тебе, щоби пропав один із твоїх членів, аніж щоб усе твоє тіло було вкинуте до геєни [вогняної].

30

And if thy right hand be a snare to thee, cut it off and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell.

І якщо твоя права рука спокушає тебе, — відрубай її і кинь геть від себе, бо краще для тебе, щоби загинув один із твоїх членів, аніж щоб усе твоє тіло було вкинуте до геєни.

Divorce

It has been said too, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a letter of divorce.

Сказано було: Хто розведеться зі своєю дружиною, нехай дасть їй листа про розлучення.

32

But *I* say unto you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, except for cause of fornication, makes her commit adultery, and whosoever marries one that is put away commits adultery.

32

А Я кажу вам, що кожний, хто розлучається зі своєю дружиною, — за винятком випадку, спричиненого розпустою, — той штовхає її на перелюб; і хто одружується з розлученою, той чинить перелюб.

33

Vows

Again, ye have heard that it has been said to the ancients, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt render to the Lord what thou hast sworn.

Знову, ви чули, що сказано було стародавнім: Не клянися неправдиво, а виконуй перед Господом клятви свої.

34

But *I* say unto you, Do not swear at all; neither by the heaven, because it is [the] throne of God;

А Я кажу вам зовсім не клястися: ні небом, бо воно є Божим престолом,

35

nor by the earth, because it is [the] footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, because it is [the] city of the great King.

35

ні землею, бо вона є підніжжям для Його ніг, ні Єрусалимом, бо це місто великого Царя;

36

Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.

36

не клянися і своєю головою, бо не можеш жодної волосини зробити ані білою, ані чорною.

37

But let your word be Yea, yea; Nay, nay; but what is more than these is from evil.

37

Тож нехай же буде ваше слово «так» — так, «ні» — ні, а що більше цього, — те від лукавого.

Love Your Enemies

Ye have heard that it has been said, Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.

38

Ви чули, що було сказано: Око за око і зуб за зуб.

39

But *I* say unto you, not to resist evil; but whoever shall strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other;

39

А Я кажу вам не противитися злу; але якщо тебе хто вдарить у твою праву щоку, підстав йому й другу.

40

and to him that would go to law with thee and take thy body coat, leave him thy cloak also.

40

А тому, хто хоче з тобою судитися і забрати в тебе одяг, віддай йому й плаща.

41

And whoever will compel thee to go one mile, go with him two.

Якщо хто примушуватиме тебе пройти одну верству, іди з ним дві.

42

To him that asks of thee give, and from him that desires to borrow of thee turn not away.

42

Тому, хто просить у тебе щось, дай; і від того, хто хоче в тебе позичити, не відвертайся.

43

Ye have heard that it has been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy.

43

Ви чули, що було сказано: Люби ближнього свого і ненавидь свого ворога.

44

But *I* say unto you, Love your enemies, [bless those who curse you,] do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who [insult you and] persecute you,

44

А Я кажу вам: Любіть ваших ворогів, [благословляйте тих, хто проклинає вас, робіть добро тим, хто ненавидить вас], і моліться за тих, які [кривдять і] переслідують вас,

45

that ye may be [the] sons of your Father who is in [the] heavens; for he makes his sun rise on evil and good, and sends rain on just and unjust.

45

щоби бути вам синами вашого Отця, Того, Хто на небі, Який Своєму сонцю велить сходити над злими і над добрими та посилає дощ на праведних і на неправедних.

46

For if ye should love those who love you, what reward have ye? Do not also the tax-gatherers the same?

46

Бо коли любите тих, хто вас любить, то яку нагороду від цього маєте? Хіба не те саме й митники роблять?

47

And if ye should salute your brethren only, what do ye extraordinary? Do not also the Gentiles the same?

47

Коли вітаєте тільки ваших братів, то що особливого робите? Чи не так і язичники роблять?

48

Be *ye* therefore perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.

48

Тож будьте досконалі, як досконалий Отець ваш Небесний.
