Instruction about Giving

Take heed not to do your alms before men to be seen of them, otherwise ye have no reward with your Father who is in the heavens.

Остерегайтесь подавати милостиню вашу перед людьми, щоб вони вас бачили; а то не мати мете нїякої нагороди від Отця вашого, що на небі.

2

When therefore thou doest alms, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may have glory from men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

Тим, коли подаєш милостиню, то не труби в трубу перед собою, як роблять лицеміри по школах та по улицях, щоб здобути слави в людей. Істино глаголю вам: Мають вони нагороду собі.

But thou, when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand does;

3

Ти ж, як подаєш милостиню, то нехай лїва рука твоя не знає, що робить права:

4

so that thine alms may be in secret, and thy Father who sees in secret will render [it] to thee.

4

щоб твоя милостиня була потайна; а Отець твій, що бачить потайне, віддасть тобі прилюдно.

The Lord's Prayer

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets so that they should appear to men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

І коли молиш ся, не будь таким, як лицеміри; бо вони люблять молитись, стоячи в школах та по росхідних улицях, щоб їх бачили люде. Істино глаголю вам: Мають вони нагороду собі.

But *thou*, when thou prayest, enter into thy chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret, and thy Father who sees in secret will render [it] to thee.

Ти ж, коли молиш ся, увійди в хатину твою та, зачинивши двері, помолись Отцю твоєму потай; а Отець твій, що бачить потайне, віддасть тобі прилюдно.

7

But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as those who are of the nations: for they think they shall be heard through their much speaking.

Як же молитесь, то не говоріть багато, як погане: бо вони думають, що за довгі молитви будуть вислухані.

8

Be not ye therefore like them, for your Father knows of what things ye have need before ye beg [anything] of him.

8

Не приподоблюйте ся ж до них; бо Отець ваш знає, чого вам треба, перш нїж просите в Него.

9

Thus therefore pray *ye*: Our Father who art in the heavens, let thy name be sanctified,

Тим же то молїться ось як: Отче наш, що на небі! Нехай святить ся імя твоє.

10

let thy kingdom come, let thy will be done as in heaven so upon the earth;

10

Нехай прийде царство твоє. Нехай буде воля твоя, як на небі, так і на землї.

11

give us to-day our needed bread,

Хлїб наш щоденний дай нам сьогоднї.

12

and forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors,

12

І прости нам довги наші, як і ми прощаємо довжникам нашим.

13

and lead us not into temptation, but save us from evil.

13

І не введи нас у спокусу, а ізбави нас од лукавого. Бо твоє єсть царство й сила, й слава по віки. Амінь.

14

For if ye forgive men their offences, your heavenly Father also will forgive you [yours],

Бо коли прощати мете людям провини їх, то й Отець ваш небесний прощати ме вам.

15

but if ye do not forgive men their offences, neither will your Father forgive your offences.

15

Як же не прощати мете людям провин їх, то й Отець ваш небесний не прощати буде провин ваших.

16

Proper Fasting

And when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, downcast in countenance; for they disfigure their faces, so that they may appear fasting to men: verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

16

Коли ж постите, нехай не буде в вас, як у лицемірів, сумного виду: зміняють бо лиця свої, щоб здаватись людям постниками. Істинно глаголю вам: Що мають вони нагороду собі.

17

But *thou*, [when] fasting, anoint thy head and wash thy face,

17

Ти ж, коли постиш, намасти голову твою, і вмий лице твоє;

18

so that thou mayest not appear fasting unto men, but to thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father who sees in secret shall render [it] to thee.

18

щоб не здавав ся людям постником, а Отцеві твоєму, що потай; а Отець твій, що бачить потайне, віддасть тобі прилюдно.

19

Treasures in Heaven

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust spoils, and where thieves dig through and steal;

19

Не збирайте собі скарбів на землї, де міль і ржа їсть, і де злодїї підкопують ся і крадуть.

20

but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust spoils, and where thieves do not dig through nor steal;

20

Збирайте ж собі скарби на небі, де нї міль, нї ржа не їсть, і де злодїї не підкопують ся й не крадуть.

21

for where thy treasure is, there will be also thy heart.

21

Бо де скарб ваш, там буде й серце ваше.

The Lamp of the Body

The lamp of the body is the eye; if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body will be light:

Сьвітло тїлу око; тим, коли око в тебе ясне, то й все тїло твоє буде сьвітле.

23

but if thine eye be wicked, thy whole body will be dark. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great the darkness!

Коли ж у тебе око лихе, то й все тїло твоє буде темне. Тим, коли сьвітло, що в тобі, буде темрява, то яка велика се темрява!

24

No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and will love the other, or he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

24

Нїхто не може служити двом панам, бо, або одного ненавидїти ме, а другого любити ме; або до одного прихилить ся, а другим гордувати ме. Не можете Богу служити й мамонї.

25

Do Not Worry

For this cause I say unto you, Do not be careful about your life, what ye should eat and what ye should drink; nor for your body what ye should put on. Is not the life more than food, and the body than raiment?

Тим глаголю вам: Не журіть ся життєм вашим, що вам їсти або пити; анї тїлом вашим, чим зодягти ся. Чи душа ж не більше їжі, а тїло одежі?

26

Look at the birds of the heaven, that they sow not, nor reap, nor gather into granaries, and your heavenly Father nourishes them. Are *ye* not much more excellent than they?

Спогляньте на птаство небесне, що не сїють і не жнуть, анї збирають у клуню; от же Отець ваш небесний годує їх. А ви хиба не луччі від них?

27

But which of you by carefulness can add to his growth one cubit?

Хто з вас, журячись, може прибавити собі зросту хоч на один локіть?

28

And why are ye careful about clothing? Observe with attention the lilies of the field, how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin;

28

І одежею чого вам журитись? Придивіть ся до польових лилїй, як вони ростуть; не працюють, нї прядуть;

29

but I say unto you, that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed as one of these.

29

глаголю ж вам: Що й Соломон у всїй славі своїй не одягавсь так, як одна з них.

30

But if God so clothe the herbage of the field, which is to-day, and to-morrow is cast into [the] oven, will he not much rather you, O [ye] of little faith?

30

Коли ж Бог так з'одягає польове зіллє, що сьогоднї воно є, а завтра вкинуть його в піч, то чи не більше ж з'одягати ме вас, маловірні?

31

Be not therefore careful, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we put on?

31

Тим же то не журіть ся, кажучи: Що їсти мем? або: Що пити мем? або: Чим зодягнемось?

32

for all these things the nations seek after; for your heavenly Father knows that ye have need of all these things.

32

Про все таке побивають ся погане; бо Отець ваш небесний знає, що вам усього того треба.

33

But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.

33

А шукайте перш царства Божого та правди Його; се ж усе додасть ся вам.

34

Be not careful therefore for the morrow, for the morrow shall be careful about itself. Sufficient to the day [is] its own evil.

34

Оце ж не журіть ся про завтра; бо завтра журити меть ся само про своє. Доволї в кожного дня лиха свого.
