Instruction about Giving

Take heed not to do your alms before men to be seen of them, otherwise ye have no reward with your Father who is in the heavens.

Уважайте: не робіть ваших добрих учинків перед людьми, щоб вони вас бачили, бо не будете мати нагороди від вашого Отця, Який на небесах.

2

When therefore thou doest alms, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may have glory from men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

Отже, коли даєш милостиню, не сурми перед собою, як це роблять лицеміри в синагогах та на вулицях, щоб їх прославляли люди. Запевняю вас: вони вже одержують свою нагороду.

But thou, when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand does;

3

А як ти даєш милостиню, хай твоя ліва рука не знає, що робить твоя права рука,

4

so that thine alms may be in secret, and thy Father who sees in secret will render [it] to thee.

4

щоби твоя милостиня була в таємниці, — і твій Отець, Який бачить таємне, віддасть тобі [явно].

The Lord's Prayer

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets so that they should appear to men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

І коли молитеся, не будьте, як ті лицеміри, котрі люблять молитися в синагогах і, стоячи на перехрестях широких вулиць, щоби показатися людям. Запевняю вас: вони одержують свою нагороду.

But *thou*, when thou prayest, enter into thy chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret, and thy Father who sees in secret will render [it] to thee.

Ти ж, коли молишся, ввійди до своєї кімнати і, замкнувши свої двері, помолися до свого Отця в тайні, — і твій Отець, Який бачить і таємне, віддасть тобі [явно].

But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as those who are of the nations: for they think they shall be heard through their much speaking.

Молячись, не говоріть багато, як ті язичники, бо думають, що завдяки своїй багатомовності будуть вислухані.

8

Be not ye therefore like them, for your Father knows of what things ye have need before ye beg [anything] of him.

Отже, не уподібнюйтеся їм, бо ваш Отець знає, чого потребуєте, перш ніж ви попросите в Нього.

Thus therefore pray *ye*: Our Father who art in the heavens, let thy name be sanctified,

Тому-то моліться так: Отче наш, Який на небесах, нехай святиться Ім’я Твоє,

10

let thy kingdom come, let thy will be done as in heaven so upon the earth;

10

нехай прийде Царство Твоє, нехай буде воля Твоя, як на небі, так і на землі;

11

give us to-day our needed bread,

11

хліб наш насущний дай нам сьогодні,

12

and forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors,

12

і прости нам провини наші, як і ми прощаємо винуватцям нашим,

13

and lead us not into temptation, but save us from evil.

13

і не введи нас у спокусу, але визволи нас від лукавого. [Бо Твоє є Царство, і сила, і слава навіки. Амінь [1] ].

For if ye forgive men their offences, your heavenly Father also will forgive you [yours],

Бо коли ви прощаєте людям їхні переступи, простить і вам ваш Небесний Отець;

15

but if ye do not forgive men their offences, neither will your Father forgive your offences.

15

якщо ж не прощаєте людям [їхніх переступів], то й ваш Отець не простить вам ваших переступів.

Proper Fasting

And when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, downcast in countenance; for they disfigure their faces, so that they may appear fasting to men: verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

16

Коли ж постите, не будьте такими, як лицеміри, які сумують, виснажують свої обличчя, щоби показати людям, що постять. Запевняю вас, що вони вже одержують свою нагороду.

17

But *thou*, [when] fasting, anoint thy head and wash thy face,

17

Ти ж, коли постиш, намасти голову свою і вмий обличчя своє,

18

so that thou mayest not appear fasting unto men, but to thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father who sees in secret shall render [it] to thee.

18

аби постити не напоказ людям, але таємно — своєму Отцеві; і твій Отець, Який бачить таємне, віддасть тобі явно.

19

Treasures in Heaven

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust spoils, and where thieves dig through and steal;

19

Не збирайте собі скарбів на землі, де міль та іржа нищать, і де злодії підкопують і крадуть,

20

but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust spoils, and where thieves do not dig through nor steal;

20

а збирайте собі скарби на небі, де ані міль, ані іржа не нищать, і де злодії не підкопують і не крадуть.

21

for where thy treasure is, there will be also thy heart.

21

Адже де твій скарб, там буде і твоє серце.

22

The Lamp of the Body

The lamp of the body is the eye; if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body will be light:

22

Світильником для тіла є око. Тому, якщо твоє око буде чистим, усе твоє тіло буде світлим,

23

but if thine eye be wicked, thy whole body will be dark. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great the darkness!

23

а коли твоє око буде лукавим, то й усе твоє тіло буде темним. Отже, коли світло, яке в тобі, є темрявою, то яка ж велика тоді темрява!

24

No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and will love the other, or he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Ніхто не може служити двом панам, оскільки, або одного зненавидить, а другого любитиме, або одного триматиметься, а іншим знехтує. Не можете служити Богові й мамоні [2].

25

Do Not Worry

For this cause I say unto you, Do not be careful about your life, what ye should eat and what ye should drink; nor for your body what ye should put on. Is not the life more than food, and the body than raiment?

Задля цього кажу вам: не журіться про своє життя, що будете їсти або що будете пити, ні про своє тіло, у що одягнетеся. Хіба душа не більша за їжу, а тіло — за одяг?

Look at the birds of the heaven, that they sow not, nor reap, nor gather into granaries, and your heavenly Father nourishes them. Are *ye* not much more excellent than they?

Погляньте на птахів небесних, які не сіють, не жнуть і в клуні не збирають, та ваш Небесний Отець годує їх; хіба ви не цінніші від них?

27

But which of you by carefulness can add to his growth one cubit?

27

Хто ж із вас, турбуючись, може додати до свого росту хоч один лікоть [3]?

28

And why are ye careful about clothing? Observe with attention the lilies of the field, how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin;

28

І чого про одяг турбуєтеся? Погляньте на польові лілеї, як вони ростуть: не працюють і не прядуть;

29

but I say unto you, that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed as one of these.

29

та кажу вам, що й Соломон у всій своїй славі не одягався так, як одна з них.

30

But if God so clothe the herbage of the field, which is to-day, and to-morrow is cast into [the] oven, will he not much rather you, O [ye] of little faith?

30

Якщо ж польову траву, яка сьогодні є, а завтра буде вкинута в піч, Бог так одягає, то чи не краще одягне вас, маловіри?

31

Be not therefore careful, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we put on?

31

Тож не журіться і не говоріть: Що будемо їсти? Або: Що будемо пити? Чи: У що зодягнемося?

32

for all these things the nations seek after; for your heavenly Father knows that ye have need of all these things.

32

Адже цього всього язичники шукають. Бо ж знає ваш Отець Небесний, що цього всього потребуєте.

33

But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.

33

Шукайте перш за все Царства Божого і Його праведності, а це все вам додасться.

34

Be not careful therefore for the morrow, for the morrow shall be careful about itself. Sufficient to the day [is] its own evil.

34

Отже, не журіться про завтрашній день, бо завтрашній день і сам про себе поклопочеться; вистачає дневі власних турбот.
