New Living Translation

  • The Leper's Prayer

    And when he had come down from the mountain, great crowds followed him.
  • Jesus Heals a Man with Leprosy

    Large crowds followed Jesus as he came down the mountainside.
  • And behold, a leper came up to [him] and did him homage, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou art able to cleanse me.
  • Suddenly, a man with leprosy approached him and knelt before him. “Lord,” the man said, “if you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean.”
  • And he stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, I will; be cleansed. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
  • Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!” And instantly the leprosy disappeared.
  • And Jesus says to him, See thou tell no man, but go, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift which Moses ordained, for a testimony to them.
  • Then Jesus said to him, “Don’t tell anyone about this. Instead, go to the priest and let him examine you. Take along the offering required in the law of Moses for those who have been healed of leprosy.a This will be a public testimony that you have been cleansed.”
  • The Centurion's Great Faith

    And when he had entered into Capernaum, a centurion came to him, beseeching him,

  • The Faith of a Roman Officer

    When Jesus returned to Capernaum, a Roman officerb came and pleaded with him,
  • and saying, Lord, my servant lies paralytic in the house, suffering grievously.
  • “Lord, my young servantc lies in bed, paralyzed and in terrible pain.”
  • And Jesus says to him, *I* will come and heal him.
  • Jesus said, “I will come and heal him.”
  • And the centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not fit that thou shouldest enter under my roof; but only speak a word, and my servant shall be healed.
  • But the officer said, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come into my home. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed.
  • For *I* also am a man under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say to this [one], Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my bondman, Do this, and he does it.
  • I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.”
  • And when Jesus heard it, he wondered, and said to those who followed, Verily I say unto you, Not even in Israel have I found so great faith.
  • When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to those who were following him, he said, “I tell you the truth, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!
  • But I say unto you, that many shall come from [the] rising and setting [sun], and shall lie down at table with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of the heavens;
  • And I tell you this, that many Gentiles will come from all over the world — from east and west — and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the feast in the Kingdom of Heaven.
  • but the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into the outer darkness: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.
  • But many Israelites — those for whom the Kingdom was prepared — will be thrown into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
  • And Jesus said to the centurion, Go, and as thou hast believed, be it to thee. And his servant was healed in that hour.
  • Then Jesus said to the Roman officer, “Go back home. Because you believed, it has happened.” And the young servant was healed that same hour.
  • Jesus Heals at Peter's House

    And when Jesus had come to Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law laid down and in a fever;

  • Jesus Heals Many People

    When Jesus arrived at Peter’s house, Peter’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a high fever.
  • and he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she arose and served him.
  • But when Jesus touched her hand, the fever left her. Then she got up and prepared a meal for him.
  • And when the evening was come, they brought to him many possessed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all that were ill;
  • That evening many demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. He cast out the evil spirits with a simple command, and he healed all the sick.
  • so that that should be fulfilled which was spoken through Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities and bore our diseases.
  • This fulfilled the word of the Lord through the prophet Isaiah, who said,
    “He took our sicknesses
    and removed our diseases.”d
  • The Cost of Following Jesus

    And Jesus, seeing great crowds around him, commanded to depart to the other side.

  • The Cost of Following Jesus

  • Then one of the teachers of religious law said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
  • And Jesus says to him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the heaven roosting-places; but the Son of man has not where he may lay his head.
  • But Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Mane has no place even to lay his head.”
  • But another of his disciples said to him, Lord, suffer me first to go away and bury my father.
  • Another of his disciples said, “Lord, first let me return home and bury my father.”
  • But Jesus said to him, Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.
  • But Jesus told him, “Follow me now. Let the spiritually dead bury their own dead.f

    And he went on board ship and his disciples followed him;

  • Jesus Calms the Storm

    Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples.
  • and behold, [the water] became very agitated on the sea, so that the ship was covered by the waves; but *he* slept.
  • Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.
  • And the disciples came and awoke him, saying, Lord save: we perish.
  • The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
  • And he says to them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then, having arisen, he rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
  • Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm.
  • But the men were astonished, saying, What sort [of man] is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?
  • The disciples were amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked. “Even the winds and waves obey him!”
  • Demons Cast into Pigs

    And there met him, when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes, two possessed by demons, coming out of the tombs, exceeding dangerous, so that no one was able to pass by that way.

  • Jesus Heals Two Demon-Possessed Men

    When Jesus arrived on the other side of the lake, in the region of the Gadarenes,g two men who were possessed by demons met him. They came out of the tombs and were so violent that no one could go through that area.
  • And behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Son of God? hast thou come here before the time to torment us?
  • They began screaming at him, “Why are you interfering with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torture us before God’s appointed time?”
  • Now there was, a great way off from them, a herd of many swine feeding;
  • There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding in the distance.
  • and the demons besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, send us away into the herd of swine.
  • So the demons begged, “If you cast us out, send us into that herd of pigs.”
  • And he said to them, Go. And they, going out, departed into the herd of swine; and lo, the whole herd [of swine] rushed down the steep slope into the sea, and died in the waters.
  • “All right, go!” Jesus commanded them. So the demons came out of the men and entered the pigs, and the whole herd plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water.
  • But they that fed them fled, and went away into the city and related everything, and what had happened as to those possessed by demons.
  • The herdsmen fled to the nearby town, telling everyone what happened to the demon-possessed men.
  • And behold, the whole city went out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged [him] to go away out of their coasts.
  • Then the entire town came out to meet Jesus, but they begged him to go away and leave them alone.
