Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

And he entered again into the synagogue; and there was there a man having his hand dried up.
  • Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

Jesus went into the synagogue again and noticed a man with a deformed hand.
  • And they watched him if he would heal him on the sabbath, that they might accuse him.
  • Since it was the Sabbath, Jesus’ enemies watched him closely. If he healed the man’s hand, they planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath.
  • And he says to the man who had his hand dried up, Rise up [and come] into the midst.
  • Jesus said to the man with the deformed hand, “Come and stand in front of everyone.”
  • And he says to them, Is it lawful on the sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill? But they were silent.
  • Then he turned to his critics and asked, “Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing evil? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it?” But they wouldn’t answer him.
  • And looking round upon them with anger, distressed at the hardening of their heart, he says to the man, Stretch out thy hand. And he stretched [it] out, and his hand was restored.
  • He looked around at them angrily and was deeply saddened by their hard hearts. Then he said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” So the man held out his hand, and it was restored!
  • And the Pharisees going out straightway with the Herodians took counsel against him, how they might destroy him.
  • At once the Pharisees went away and met with the supporters of Herod to plot how to kill Jesus.
  • Great Crowds Follow Jesus

And Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea; and a great multitude from Galilee followed him, and from Judaea,

  • Crowds Follow Jesus

Jesus went out to the lake with his disciples, and a large crowd followed him. They came from all over Galilee, Judea,
  • and from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea and beyond the Jordan; and they of around Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, having heard what things he did, came to him.
  • Jerusalem, Idumea, from east of the Jordan River, and even from as far north as Tyre and Sidon. The news about his miracles had spread far and wide, and vast numbers of people came to see him.
  • And he spoke to his disciples, in order that a little ship should wait upon him on account of the crowd, that they might not press upon him.
  • Jesus instructed his disciples to have a boat ready so the crowd would not crush him.
  • For he healed many, so that they beset him that they might touch him, as many as had plagues.
  • He had healed many people that day, so all the sick people eagerly pushed forward to touch him.
  • And the unclean spirits, when they beheld him, fell down before him, and cried saying, *Thou* art the Son of God.
  • And whenever those possessed by evila spirits caught sight of him, the spirits would throw them to the ground in front of him shrieking, “You are the Son of God!”
  • And he rebuked them much, that they might not make him manifest.
  • But Jesus sternly commanded the spirits not to reveal who he was.
  • The Twelve Apostles

And he goes up into the mountain, and calls whom he himself would, and they went to him.

  • Jesus Chooses the Twelve Apostles

Afterward Jesus went up on a mountain and called out the ones he wanted to go with him. And they came to him.
  • And he appointed twelve that they might be with him, and that he might send them to preach,
  • Then he appointed twelve of them and called them his apostles.b They were to accompany him, and he would send them out to preach,
  • and to have power [to heal diseases, and] to cast out demons.
  • giving them authority to cast out demons.
  • And he gave to Simon the surname of Peter;
  • These are the twelve he chose:
    Simon (whom he named Peter),
  • and James the [son] of Zebedee, and John the brother of James, and he gave them the surname of Boanerges, that is, Sons of thunder;
  • James and John (the sons of Zebedee, but Jesus nicknamed them “Sons of Thunder”c),
  • and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the [son] of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean,
  • Andrew,
    Philip,
    Bartholomew,
    Matthew,
    Thomas,
    James (son of Alphaeus),
    Thaddaeus,
    Simon (the zealotd),
  • and Judas Iscariote, who also delivered him up. And they come to [the] house.
  • Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed him).
  • A House Divided

And again a crowd comes together, so that they cannot even eat bread.

  • Jesus and the Prince of Demons

One time Jesus entered a house, and the crowds began to gather again. Soon he and his disciples couldn’t even find time to eat.
  • And his relatives having heard [of it] went out to lay hold on him, for they said, He is out of his mind.
  • When his family heard what was happening, they tried to take him away. “He’s out of his mind,” they said.
  • And the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem said, He has Beelzebub, and, By the prince of the demons he casts out demons.
  • But the teachers of religious law who had arrived from Jerusalem said, “He’s possessed by Satan,e the prince of demons. That’s where he gets the power to cast out demons.”
  • And having called them to [him], he said to them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?
  • Jesus called them over and responded with an illustration. “How can Satan cast out Satan?” he asked.
  • And if a kingdom has become divided against itself, that kingdom cannot subsist.
  • “A kingdom divided by civil war will collapse.
  • And if a house has become divided against itself, that house cannot subsist.
  • Similarly, a family splintered by feuding will fall apart.
  • And if Satan rise up against himself, and is divided, he cannot subsist, but has an end.
  • And if Satan is divided and fights against himself, how can he stand? He would never survive.
  • But no one can, having entered into his house, plunder the goods of the strong [man] unless he first bind the strong [man], and then he will plunder his house.
  • Let me illustrate this further. Who is powerful enough to enter the house of a strong man and plunder his goods? Only someone even stronger — someone who could tie him up and then plunder his house.
  • The Unpardonable Sin

    Verily I say unto you, that all sins shall be forgiven to the sons of men, and all the injurious speeches [with] which they may speak injuriously;
  • “I tell you the truth, all sin and blasphemy can be forgiven,
  • but whosoever shall speak injuriously against the Holy Spirit, to eternity has no forgiveness; but lies under the guilt of an everlasting sin;
  • but anyone who blasphemes the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. This is a sin with eternal consequences.”
  • because they said, he has an unclean spirit.
  • He told them this because they were saying, “He’s possessed by an evil spirit.”
  • Jesus' Mother and Brothers

And his brethren and his mother come, and standing without sent to him calling him.

  • The True Family of Jesus

Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him. They stood outside and sent word for him to come out and talk with them.
  • And a crowd sat around him. And they said to him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren seek thee without.
  • There was a crowd sitting around Jesus, and someone said, “Your mother and your brothersf are outside asking for you.”
  • And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother or my brethren?
  • Jesus replied, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?”
  • And looking around in a circuit at those that were sitting around him, he says, Behold my mother and my brethren:
  • Then he looked at those around him and said, “Look, these are my mother and brothers.
  • for whosoever shall do the will of God, *he* is my brother, and sister, and mother.
  • Anyone who does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”
