Тоді Ісус відповів: «Коли молитеся, кажіть так:
„Отче наш [Небесний],[32] хай святиться ім’я Твоє. Нехай прийде Царство Твоє. [Нехай буде воля Твоя, як на Землі, так і на Небі.] [33]

and remit us our sins, for we also remit to every one indebted to us; and lead us not into temptation.

До мене щойно прийшов один із друзів. Він з дороги, а я не маю чим пригостити його”.
and he within answering should say, Do not disturb me; the door is already shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise up to give [it] thee?
І уявіть, що ваш друг відповідає вам з-за дверей: „Відчепися! Двері замкнуті. Мої діти і я вже в ліжку. Не вставати ж мені тепер, аби щось там тобі дати!”
-- I say to you, Although he will not get up and give [them] to him because he is his friend, because of his shamelessness, at any rate, he will rise and give him as many as he wants.
Істинно кажу вам: хоч він і не підведеться, щоб дати вам хліб заради вашої дружби, але встане й дасть те, що ви просите, якщо будете наполегливі.
And *I* say to you, Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you.
То ж кажу вам: просіть, і Бог дасть вам, шукайте і знайдете, стукайте і вам відчинять.
For every one that asks receives; and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it will be opened.
Бо кожен, хто просить — отримає; хто шукає — знайде, а двері завжди відчиняться тим, хто стукає.
But of whom of you that is a father shall a son ask bread, and [the father] shall give him a stone? or also a fish, and instead of a fish shall give him a serpent?
Чи є такий батько, який дасть сину гадюку, коли той проситиме риби?
or if also he shall ask an egg, shall give him a scorpion?
Якщо ж син яйце проситиме, то чи дасть йому батько скорпіона? Ніколи!
If therefore *ye*, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much rather shall the Father who is of heaven give [the] Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
Отже, коли ви, лихі й недобрі люди, знаєте, як зробити добрий дарунок дітям своїм, то наскільки ж вірніше те, що Отець Небесний обдарує Духом Святим усіх, хто просить!»
A House Divided

Одного разу Ісус вигнав нечистого духа з чоловіка, який був німим. Сталося так, що коли нечистий вийшов із німого, той почав говорити. Натовп навколо був вражений.
But some from among them said, By Beelzebub the prince of the demons casts he out demons.
Але деякі з натовпу казали: «Він виганяє нечистих не інакше, як владою Вельзевула, володаря демонів!»
And others tempting [him] sought from him a sign out of heaven.
Деякі інші, бажаючи випробувати Його, попросили здійснити їм диво, як знамення від Господа.
But *he*, knowing their thoughts, said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation: and a house set against a house falls;
Знаючи їхні думки, Ісус мовив: «Кожне царство, поділене міжусобною ворожнечею, гине. І розвалиться та родина, що поділена сама проти себе.
and if also Satan is divided against himself, how shall his kingdom subsist? because ye say that I cast out demons by Beelzebub.
Якщо сатана воюватиме супроти самого себе (як ви кажете), як тоді встоїть його царство? Я питаю про це тому, що ви кажете, ніби Я виганяю нечистих владою Вельзевула.[36]
But if *I* by Beelzebub cast out demons, your sons -- by whom do they cast [them] out? For this reason *they* shall be your judges.
А якщо Я виганяю нечистих силою Вельзевула, то чиєю владою виганяють їх ваші послідовники? Тому вони й будуть суддями вашими!
But if by the finger of God I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God is come upon you.
З іншого боку, якщо Я виганяю нечистих Божою силою, то це є доказом того, що Царство Боже вже прийшло до вас.
When the strong [man] armed keeps his own house, his goods are in peace;
Коли дужий і добре озброєний чоловік стереже свій маєток, тоді майно його в безпеці.
but when the stronger than he coming upon [him] overcomes him, he takes away his panoply in which he trusted, and he will divide the spoil [he has taken] from him.
Та якщо раптом хтось дужчий нападе й переможе, то забере собі зброю й обладунки, на які господар розраховував, щоб захистити себе, і зробить з ними все, що йому забажається.
He that is not with me is against me, and he that gathers not with me scatters.
Хто не зі Мною, той проти Мене, хто не допомагає Мені збирати, той розкидає».
Return of an Unclean Spirit
When the unclean spirit has gone out of the man, he goes through dry places seeking rest; and not finding [any] he says, I will return to my house whence I came out.

«Коли нечистий дух виходить із людини, він блукає пустелями, шукаючи спочинку. І не знайшовши, говорить: „Я повернуся до своєї домівки, що полишив”.

Then he goes and takes seven other spirits worse than himself, and entering in, they dwell there; and the last condition of that man becomes worse than the first.
Тоді він іде й приводить сімох інших духів, іще гірших за себе. Вони всі заходять і живуть там, тож тій людині стає ще гірше, ніж було спершу».
True Blessedness
And it came to pass as he spake these things, a certain woman, lifting up her voice out of the crowd, said to him, Blessed is the womb that has borne thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.

І от коли Він усе це говорив, одна жінка з натовпу раптом вигукнула Йому: «Блаженне черево, що народило Тебе, і груди, що годували Тебе!»
But *he* said, Yea rather, blessed are they who hear the word of God and keep [it].
Та Він відповів: «Ліпше сказати: блаженний той, хто слухає Слово Боже й дотримується його!»
The Sign of Jonah
But as the crowds thronged together, he began to say, This generation is a wicked generation: it seeks a sign, and a sign shall not be given to it but the sign of Jonas.

For as Jonas was a sign to the Ninevites, thus shall also the Son of man be to this generation.

A queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and shall condemn them: for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, more than Solomon is here.
В Судний День цариця Півдня [38] стане проти людей цього покоління й засудить їх, бо вона сама прийшла здалеку, щоб послухати мудрості Соломонової. А тут є Хтось [39] величніший ніж Соломон.
Men of Nineveh shall stand up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and behold, more than Jonas is here.
Люди Ниневії стануть на Суді проти цього покоління й засудять його, бо вони розкаялися у відповідь на проповіді Йони. А тут же є Хтось величніший ніж Йона».
The Lamp of the Body
But no one having lit a lamp sets it in secret, nor under the corn-measure, but on the lamp-stand, that they who enter in may see the light.

«Ніхто не ставить запаленний світильник у таємному місці або під перевернуту посудину. Навпаки, його ставлять на підставку, щоб кожен, хто зайде в приміщення, бачив світло.
The lamp of the body is thine eye: when thine eye is simple, thy whole body also is light; but when it is wicked, thy body also is dark.
Око — єдине джерело світла для тіла. Отже, якщо ви бачите людину, та бажаєте допомогти їй, то й усе тіло ваше буде наповнене світлом. Але якщо ви дивитеся на людину егоїстично, то й усе тіло ваше буде в темряві.
See therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.
Тож стережіться, щоб світло в вас не перетворилося на темряву!
If therefore thy whole body [is] light, not having any part dark, it shall be all light as when the lamp lights thee with its brightness.
Якщо ж усе тіло ваше сповнене світла, і не має темних закутків, то буде так, ніби світильник осяяв вас своїм промінням».
Woes to Pharisees and Experts in Law
But as he spoke, a certain Pharisee asked him that he would dine with him; and entering in he placed himself at table.

But the Pharisee seeing [it] wondered that he had not first washed before dinner.
Фарисей побачив, що Ісус не омив руки [40] перед їжею, й здивувався.
But the Lord said to him, Now do ye Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but your inward [parts] are full of plunder and wickedness.
Та Господь сказав йому: «Ви, фарисеї, миєте чаші й тарілки ззовні, але зсередини ви повні жадоби й лиха.
Fools, has not he who has made the outside made the inside also?
Нерозумні! Чи не Той, Хто створив зовнішнє, створив і внутрішнє?
But rather give alms of what ye have, and behold, all things are clean to you.
Намагайтеся очистити себе зсередини. Не обминайте бідних, та буде вам повне очищення.
But woe unto you, Pharisees, for ye pay tithes of mint and rue and every herb, and pass by the judgment and the love of God: these ye ought to have done, and not have left those aside.
Та горе вам, фарисеї, бо віддаєте десятину з рути, м’яти і всяких інших садових рослин, [41] але оминаєте Закон і любов до Бога. Але ж саме Закон і любов до Господа повинні бути головними. Слід виконувати головніше, не забуваючи й про інше.
Woe unto you, Pharisees, for ye love the first seat in the synagogues and salutations in the market-places.
Горе вам, фарисеї, бо любите ви займати найпочесніші місця в синагогах, любите, щоб вас шанобливо вітали на базарах.
Woe unto you, for ye are as the sepulchres which appear not, and the men walking over them do not know [it].
Горе вам, бо ви, як непомічені могили — люди зверху ходять по них і не знають цього».
And one of the doctors of the law answering says to him, Teacher, in saying these things thou insultest us also.
Вислухавши всі ці слова, один із законників озвався: «Вчителю, кажучи це, Ти й нас ображаєш».
And he said, To you also woe, doctors of the law, for ye lay upon men burdens heavy to bear, and yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.
Ісус відповів: «Горе й вам, законники, бо ви встановлюєте суворі правила, котрих важко дотримуватися, та звалюєте на людей цей непосильний тягар,[42] а самі й пальцем не поворухнете, щоб полегшити ту ношу.
Woe unto you, for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, but your fathers killed them.
Горе вам, бо ви будуєте могили пророкам, але це ж ваші пращури вбили їх.
Ye bear witness then, and consent to the works of your fathers; for *they* killed them, and *ye* build [their sepulchres].
Тож ви засвідчуєте свою згоду з діями ваших предків, бо вони вбивали, а ви будуєте могили.
For this reason also the wisdom of God has said, I will send to them prophets and apostles, and of these shall they kill and drive out by persecution,
Щодо цього, то мудрість Божа також твердила: „Я пошлю до них пророків і апостолів,[43] і декого з них люди вб’ють, а інших переслідуватимуть”.
that the blood of all the prophets which has been poured out from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation,
Тож цей рід заплатить за кров усіх пророків, пролиту з часів створення світу — від крові Авеля до крові Захарії,[44] вбитого між вівтарем та Храмом Божим. Так, кажу вам: цьому родові доведеться заплатити за все.
from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zacharias, who perished between the altar and the house; yea, I say to you, it shall be required of this generation.
Woe unto you, the doctors of the law, for ye have taken away the key of knowledge; yourselves have not entered in, and those who were entering in ye have hindered.
Горе вам, законники, бо ви забрали від людей ключ до знання Бога. Ви самі не входите і перешкоджаєте іншим — тим, хто прагне».
And as he said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him urgently, and to make him speak of many things;
Коли Ісус виходив звідти, книжники і фарисеї були вороже налаштовані до Нього і тиснули на Ісуса різноманітними запитаннями.
