New American Standard Bible

  • A Call to Repentance

Now at the same time there were present some who told him of the Galileans whose blood Pilate mingled with [that of] their sacrifices.
  • Call to Repent

Now on the same occasion there were some present who reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.
  • And he answering said to them, Think ye that these Galileans were sinners beyond all the Galileans because they suffered such things?
  • And Jesus said to them, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans because they suffered this fate?
  • No, I say to you, but if ye repent not, ye shall all perish in the same manner.
  • “I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
  • Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, think ye that *they* were debtors beyond all the men who dwell in Jerusalem?
  • “Or do you suppose that those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them were worse culprits than all the men who live in Jerusalem?
  • No, I say to you, but if ye repent not, ye shall all perish in like manner.
  • “I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”
  • The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree

And he spoke this parable: A certain [man] had a fig-tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit upon it and did not find [any].
  • And He began telling this parable: “A man had a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and did not find any.
  • And he said to the vinedresser, Behold, [these] three years I come seeking fruit on this fig-tree and find none: cut it down; why does it also render the ground useless?
  • “And he said to the vineyard-keeper, ‘Behold, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree without finding any. Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground?’
  • But he answering says to him, Sir, let it alone for this year also, until I shall dig about it and put dung,
  • “And he answered and said to him, ‘Let it alone, sir, for this year too, until I dig around it and put in fertilizer;
  • and if it shall bear fruit -- but if not, after that thou shalt cut it down.
  • and if it bears fruit next year, fine; but if not, cut it down.’”
  • Jesus Heals a Woman on the Sabbath

And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.

  • Healing on the Sabbath

And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath.
  • And lo, [there was] a woman having a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and she was bent together and wholly unable to lift her head up.
  • And there was a woman who for eighteen years had had a sickness caused by a spirit; and she was bent double, and could not straighten up at all.
  • And Jesus, seeing her, called to [her], and said to her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.
  • When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your sickness.”
  • And he laid his hands upon her; and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.
  • And He laid His hands on her; and immediately she was made erect again and began glorifying God.
  • But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus healed on the sabbath, answering said to the crowd, There are six days in which [people] ought to work; in these therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.
  • But the synagogue official, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, began saying to the crowd in response, “There are six days in which work should be done; so come during them and get healed, and not on the Sabbath day.”
  • The Lord therefore answered him and said, Hypocrites! does not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the manger and leading [it] away, water [it]?
  • But the Lord answered him and said, “You hypocrites, does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead him away to water him?
  • And this [woman], who is a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound, lo, [these] eighteen years, ought she not to be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?
  • “And this woman, a daughter of Abraham as she is, whom Satan has bound for eighteen long years, should she not have been released from this bond on the Sabbath day?”
  • And as he said these things, all who were opposed to him were ashamed; and all the crowd rejoiced at all the glorious things which were being done by him.
  • As He said this, all His opponents were being humiliated; and the entire crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things being done by Him.
  • The Parable of the Mustard Seed

And he said, To what is the kingdom of God like? and to what shall I liken it?

  • Parables of Mustard Seed and Leaven

So He was saying, “What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it?
  • It is like a grain of mustard [seed] which a man took and cast into his garden; and it grew and became a great tree, and the birds of heaven lodged in its branches.
  • “It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and threw into his own garden; and it grew and became a tree, and THE BIRDS OF THE AIR NESTED IN ITS BRANCHES.”
  • The Parable of the Leaven

And again he said, To what shall I liken the kingdom of God?
  • And again He said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God?
  • It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal until the whole was leavened.
  • “It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three pecks of flour until it was all leavened.”
  • The Narrow Gate

And he went through one city and village after another, teaching, and journeying to Jerusalem.

  • Teaching in the Villages

And He was passing through from one city and village to another, teaching, and proceeding on His way to Jerusalem.
  • And one said to him, Sir, [are] such as are to be saved few in number? But he said unto them,
  • And someone said to Him, “Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?” And He said to them,
  • Strive with earnestness to enter in through the narrow door, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter in and will not be able.
  • “Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.
  • From the time that the master of the house shall have risen up and shall have shut the door, and ye shall begin to stand without and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, open to us; and he answering shall say to you, I know you not whence ye are:
  • “Once the head of the house gets up and shuts the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door, saying, ‘Lord, open up to us!’ then He will answer and say to you, ‘I do not know where you are from.’
  • then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten in thy presence and drunk, and thou hast taught in our streets;
  • “Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets’;
  • and he shall say, I tell you, I do not know you whence ye are; depart from me, all [ye] workers of iniquity.
  • and He will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you are from; DEPART FROM ME, ALL YOU EVILDOERS.’
  • There shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves cast out.
  • “In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being thrown out.
  • And they shall come from east and west, and from north and south, and shall lie down at table in the kingdom of God.
  • “And they will come from east and west and from north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God.
  • And behold, there are last who shall be first, and there are first who shall be last.
  • “And behold, some are last who will be first and some are first who will be last.”
  • Lament over Jerusalem

The same hour certain Pharisees came up, saying to him, Get out, and go hence, for Herod is desirous to kill thee.
  • Just at that time some Pharisees approached, saying to Him, “Go away, leave here, for Herod wants to kill You.”
  • And he said to them, Go, tell that fox, Behold, I cast out demons and accomplish cures to-day and to-morrow, and the third [day] I am perfected;
  • And He said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I reach My goal.’
  • but I must needs walk to-day and to-morrow and the [day] following, for it must not be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.
  • “Nevertheless I must journey on today and tomorrow and the next day; for it cannot be that a prophet would perish outside of Jerusalem.
  • Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the [city] that kills the prophets and stones those that are sent unto her, how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen her brood under her wings, and ye would not.
  • “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it!
  • Behold, your house is left unto you; and I say unto you, that ye shall not see me until it come that ye say, Blessed [is] he that comes in the name of [the] Lord.
  • “Behold, your house is left to you desolate; and I say to you, you will not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!’”
