Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • The Parable of the Lost Sheep

    And all the tax-gatherers and the sinners were coming near to him to hear him;
  • Parable of the Lost Sheep

    Tax collectors and other notorious sinners often came to listen to Jesus teach.
  • and the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, This [man] receives sinners and eats with them.
  • This made the Pharisees and teachers of religious law complain that he was associating with such sinful people — even eating with them!
  • And he spoke to them this parable, saying,
  • So Jesus told them this story:
  • What man of you having a hundred sheep, and having lost one of them, does not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
  • “If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them gets lost, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others in the wilderness and go to search for the one that is lost until he finds it?
  • and having found it, he lays it upon his own shoulders, rejoicing;
  • And when he has found it, he will joyfully carry it home on his shoulders.
  • and being come to the house, calls together the friends and the neighbours, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost sheep.
  • When he arrives, he will call together his friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’
  • I say unto you, that thus there shall be joy in heaven for one repenting sinner, [more] than for ninety and nine righteous who have no need of repentance.
  • In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven’t strayed away!
  • The Parable of the Lost Coin

    Or, what woman having ten drachmas, if she lose one drachma, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek carefully till she find it?

  • Parable of the Lost Coin

    “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coinsa and loses one. Won’t she light a lamp and sweep the entire house and search carefully until she finds it?
  • and having found it she calls together the friends and neighbours, saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found the drachma which I had lost.
  • And when she finds it, she will call in her friends and neighbors and say, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost coin.’
  • Thus, I say unto you, there is joy before the angels of God for one repenting sinner.
  • In the same way, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels when even one sinner repents.”
  • The Parable of the Prodigal Son

    And he said, A certain man had two sons;

  • Parable of the Lost Son

    To illustrate the point further, Jesus told them this story: “A man had two sons.
  • and the younger of them said to his father, Father, give to me the share of the property that falls [to me]. And he divided to them what he was possessed of.
  • The younger son told his father, ‘I want my share of your estate now before you die.’ So his father agreed to divide his wealth between his sons.
  • And after not many days the younger son gathering all together went away into a country a long way off, and there dissipated his property, living in debauchery.
  • “A few days later this younger son packed all his belongings and moved to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money in wild living.
  • But when he had spent all there arose a violent famine throughout that country, and he began to be in want.
  • About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve.
  • And he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
  • He persuaded a local farmer to hire him, and the man sent him into his fields to feed the pigs.
  • And he longed to fill his belly with the husks which the swine were eating; and no one gave to him.
  • The young man became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything.
  • And coming to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have abundance of bread, and *I* perish here by famine.
  • “When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger!
  • I will rise up and go to my father, and I will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before thee;
  • I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you,
  • I am no longer worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.
  • and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant.”’
  • And he rose up and went to his own father. But while he was yet a long way off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell upon his neck, and covered him with kisses.
  • “So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.
  • And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before thee; I am no longer worthy to be called thy son.
  • His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.b
  • But the father said to his bondmen, Bring out the best robe and clothe him in [it], and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet;
  • “But his father said to the servants, ‘Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet.
  • and bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and make merry:
  • And kill the calf we have been fattening. We must celebrate with a feast,
  • for this my son was dead and has come to life, was lost and has been found. And they began to make merry.
  • for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.’ So the party began.
  • And his elder son was in the field; and as, coming [up], he drew nigh to the house, he heard music and dancing.
  • “Meanwhile, the older son was in the fields working. When he returned home, he heard music and dancing in the house,
  • And having called one of the servants, he inquired what these things might be.
  • and he asked one of the servants what was going on.
  • And he said to him, Thy brother is come, and thy father has killed the fatted calf because he has received him safe and well.
  • ‘Your brother is back,’ he was told, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf. We are celebrating because of his safe return.’
  • But he became angry and would not go in. And his father went out and besought him.
  • “The older brother was angry and wouldn’t go in. His father came out and begged him,
  • But he answering said to his father, Behold, so many years I serve thee, and never have I transgressed a commandment of thine; and to me hast thou never given a kid that I might make merry with my friends:
  • but he replied, ‘All these years I’ve slaved for you and never once refused to do a single thing you told me to. And in all that time you never gave me even one young goat for a feast with my friends.
  • but when this thy son, who has devoured thy substance with harlots, is come, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.
  • Yet when this son of yours comes back after squandering your money on prostitutes, you celebrate by killing the fattened calf!’
  • But he said to him, Child, *thou* art ever with me, and all that is mine is thine.
  • “His father said to him, ‘Look, dear son, you have always stayed by me, and everything I have is yours.
  • But it was right to make merry and rejoice, because this thy brother was dead and has come to life again, and was lost and has been found.
  • We had to celebrate this happy day. For your brother was dead and has come back to life! He was lost, but now he is found!’”
