The Birth of Jesus

But it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census should be made of all the habitable world.

The census itself first took place when Cyrenius had the government of Syria.

То був найперший перепис, й проводився він, коли Кириній був губернатором Сирії.

And all went to be inscribed in the census roll, each to his own city:

Усі люди пійшли реєструватися, і кожен пішов до свого рідного міста.

and Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city Nazareth to Judaea, to David's city, the which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David,

Тож Йосип також вирушив з Назарета Ґалилейського, де він жив, до Юдеї, до Давидового міста, яке зветься Віфлеємом, оскільки він походив з родини Давидових нащадків.

to be inscribed in the census roll with Mary who was betrothed to him [as his] wife, she being great with child.

Він узяв з собою Марію, тому що був заручений з нею; у тий час вона вже чекала дитину.

And it came to pass, while they were there, the days of her giving birth [to her child] were fulfilled,

Так сталося, що поки вони були там, настав строк Марії стати матір’ю, і вона народила свого першого Сина. Сповивши Дитину у полотно, Марія поклала Його в ясла, оскільки в заїжджому дворі вільних місць не було.

and she brought forth her first-born son, and wrapped him up in swaddling-clothes and laid him in the manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

The Shepherds and Angels

And there were shepherds in that country abiding without, and keeping watch by night over their flock.

Кілька пастухів тієї місцевості лишилися на ніч у чистім полі стерегти свої отари.

9

And lo, an angel of [the] Lord was there by them, and [the] glory of [the] Lord shone around them, and they feared [with] great fear.

9

І з’явився їм Ангел Господній, і сяйво Слави Господньої пролилося на них. Страх охопив пастухів.

10

And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I announce to you glad tidings of great joy, which shall be to all the people;

10

Та Ангел сказав їм: «Не бійтеся, я приніс вам добру звістку, яка дасть велику радість людям.

11

for to-day a Saviour has been born to you in David's city, who is Christ [the] Lord.

11

Тому що сьогодні в місті Давидовім народився для вас Спаситель — Христос Господь.

12

And this is the sign to you: ye shall find a babe wrapped in swaddling-clothes, and lying in a manger.

12

І знак вам буде такий: ви знайдете в яслах Дитину, загорнуту у полотно».

13

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,

Раптом до Ангела приєдналася сила-силенна інших Ангелів, які славили Бога зі словами:

14

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good pleasure in men.

14

«Слава Господу на Небесах, і хай мир панує на землі між людьми, які Богу милі».

15

And it came to pass, as the angels departed from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, Let us make our way then now as far as Bethlehem, and let us see this thing that is come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.

15

Коли Ангели залишили пастухів і повернулися на Небо, пастухи заговорили між собою: «Ходімо до Віфлеєма й подивимося на те, що там сталось, про що Господь дав нам знати».

16

And they came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in the manger;

16

Тож вони поспішили й знайшли Марію з Йосипом і Дитиною, Яка лежала в яслах.

17

and having seen [it] they made known about the country the thing which had been said to them concerning this child.

17

Побачивши Немовля, пастухи всім розповіли про звістку, яку вони одержали про цю Дитину.

18

And all who heard [it] wondered at the things said to them by the shepherds.

18

І розказана ними історія дивувала всіх, хто чув її.

19

But Mary kept all these things [in her mind], pondering [them] in her heart.

19

Марія ж, мов скарб, збирала все це й складала в своєму серці. [5]

20

And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all things which they had heard and seen, as it had been said to them.

20

А пастухи повернулися додому, хвалячи й прославляючи Бога за все те, що вони почули й побачили — точнісінько так, як було їм сказано.

21

Jesus Presented at the Temple

And when eight days were fulfilled for circumcising him, his name was called Jesus, which was the name given by the angel before he had been conceived in the womb.

Коли сповнилося вісім днів і настав час робити Хлопчику обрізання, Його нарекли Ісусом. Це було ім’я, яке дав Йому Ангел ще до Його зачаття в материній утробі.

22

And when the days were fulfilled for their purifying according to the law of Moses, they brought him to Jerusalem to present [him] to the Lord

22-24

А як настав час їхнього очищення, згідно з Мойсеєвим Законом, батьки взяли Ісуса до Єрусалиму, щоб явити Його перед Господом, як то написано у Законі Господнім: «кожен хлопчик-первісток мусить бути посвячений Господові»,[6] й покласти жертву, як того вимагає Закон Господній: «принести в пожертву пару горлиць або голуб’ят».

(as it is written in the law of [the] Lord: Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord),

24

and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of [the] Lord: A pair of turtle doves, or two young pigeons.

25

The Prophecy of Simeon

And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was just and pious, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and [the] Holy Spirit was upon him.

25

Мешкав тоді в Єрусалимі чоловік на ймення Симеон. Був він людиною праведною й побожною. Він чекав, коли Господь прийде, та порятує Ізраїль, і Святий Дух був з ним.

26

And it was divinely communicated to him by the Holy Spirit, that he should not see death before he should see [the] Lord's Christ.

26

То Дух Святий відкрив йому, що він не спізнає смерті, доки не побачить на власні очі Господнього Христа.

27

And he came in the Spirit into the temple; and as the parents brought in the child Jesus that they might do for him according to the custom of the law,

27-28

Осяяний Духом, прийшов Симеон у Храм, і коли батьки внесли малого Ісуса, щоб зробити все для Нього згідно з традицією Закону, Симеон узяв Дитину на руки, й благословив Бога мовивши:

28

*he* received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said,

29

Lord, now thou lettest thy bondman go, according to thy word, in peace;

29-32

«Тепер, Господи, відпусти слугу Свого з миром, як обіцяв Ти, оскільки очі мої бачили Твоє Спасіння,[7] Яке Ти приготував перед усіма народами. Він — Світло для прозріння поганам і на славу Твоєму народу ізраїльському».

30

for mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

31

which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples;

32

a light for revelation of [the] Gentiles and [the] glory of thy people Israel.

33

And his father and mother wondered at the things which were said concerning him.

33

Батько й мати були вражені тим, що було сказане про їхнього Сина.

34

And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother, Lo, this [child] is set for the fall and rising up of many in Israel, and for a sign spoken against;

34-35

Симеон благословив їх сказавши Марії, Ісусовій матері: «Він призначений багатьох в Ізраїлі піднести або скинути додолу, Він покликаний бути знаменням, яке люди відкинуть, і потаємні думки багатьох людей відкриються, та це буде так боляче тобі, неначе меч пронизає серце твоє».

(and even a sword shall go through thine own soul;) so that [the] thoughts may be revealed from many hearts.

36

The Prophecy of Anna

And there was a prophetess, Anna, daughter of Phanuel, of [the] tribe of Asher, who was far advanced in years, having lived with [her] husband seven years from her virginity,

36-37

У той самий час пророчиця Анна, дочка Фануїлова з роду Ашера, знаходилася у Храмі. Вона була дуже стара. Сім років прожила вона з чоловіком після одруження, а потім вдовувала аж до вісімдесятичотирирічного віку. Не відлучаючись із Храму, день і ніч вона постом і молитвами служила Господу.

37

and herself a widow up to eighty-four years; who did not depart from the temple, serving night and day with fastings and prayers;

38

and she coming up the same hour gave praise to the Lord, and spoke of him to all those who waited for redemption in Jerusalem.

Анна підійшла до Ісусових батьків саме тоді, коли вони розмовляли з Симеоном. Вона подякувала Богові й розповіла про Ісуса всім, хто чекав визволення Єрусалиму.

The Return to Nazareth

And when they had completed all things according to the law of [the] Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own city Nazareth.

39

Коли Йосип та Марія виконали все, що вимагалося Законом Господнім, вони повернулися до Ґалилеї, у своє рідне місто Назарет.

40

And the child grew and waxed strong [in spirit], filled with wisdom, and God's grace was upon him.

40

The Boy Jesus at the Temple

And his parents went yearly to Jerusalem at the feast of the passover.

41

Щороку батьки Його вирушали до Єрусалиму на свято Пасхи.

And when he was twelve years old, and they went up [to Jerusalem] according to the custom of the feast

42

Подалися вони, як завжди, й того року, коли Ісусові сповнилося дванадцять.

43

and had completed the days, as they returned, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, and his parents knew not [of it];

Як скінчилося свято, батьки верталися додому, а Хлопчик Ісус лишився в Єрусалимі, хоч батьки не знали про те.

but, supposing him to be in the company that journeyed together, they went a day's journey, and sought him among their relations and acquaintances:

Цілий день вони йшли, вважаючи, що Він десь тут, у гурті. Потім почали шукати Його серед своїх родичів та друзів.

45

and not having found him they returned to Jerusalem seeking him.

45

І, не знайшовши, повернулися до Єрусалиму, сподіваючись знайти Його там.

And it came to pass, after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers and hearing them and asking them questions.

46

І так сталося, що знайшли вони Його аж через три дні у Храмі. Ісус сидів серед учителів, слухав їхню науку й ставив їм запитання.

47

And all who heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

47

І всі, хто чули Його, були здивовані Його розумінням та відповідями.

And when they saw him they were amazed: and his mother said to him, Child, why hast thou dealt thus with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee distressed.

48

Побачивши Його, батьки були вражені, а Його мати звернулася до Нього: «Дитино, чому Ти зробив з нами таке? Твій батько і я страшенно переживали, розшукуючи Тебе».

49

And he said to them, Why [is it] that ye have sought me? did ye not know that I ought to be [occupied] in my Father's business?

49

А Він відповів: «Чому ви шукали Мене? Чи ви не знали, що Я мушу бути у домі Батька Мого [8]?»

50

And they understood not the thing that he said to them.

50

Та вони не зрозуміли цієї відповіді.

51

And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and he was in subjection to them. And his mother kept all these things in her heart.

51

Тоді Ісус повернувся із ними до Назарета, і Він слухався їх. Та Його мати зберігала все це в своїм серці.

52

And Jesus advanced in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and men.

52

Тож Ісус зростав мудрістю, статурою та ласкою Божою і людською.
