Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • The Poor Widow's Offering

    And he looked up and saw the rich casting their gifts into the treasury;
  • The Widow’s Offering

    While Jesus was in the Temple, he watched the rich people dropping their gifts in the collection box.
  • but he saw also a certain poor widow casting therein two mites.
  • Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two small coins.a
  • And he said, Verily I say unto you, that this poor widow has cast in more than all;
  • “I tell you the truth,” Jesus said, “this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them.
  • for all these out of their abundance have cast into the gifts [of God]; but she out of her need has cast in all the living which she had.
  • For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has.”
  • Temple Destruction Foretold

    And as some spoke of the temple, that it was adorned with goodly stones and consecrated offerings, he said,

  • Jesus Speaks about the Future

    Some of his disciples began talking about the majestic stonework of the Temple and the memorial decorations on the walls. But Jesus said,
  • [As to] these things which ye are beholding, days are coming in which there shall not be left stone upon stone which shall not be thrown down.
  • “The time is coming when all these things will be completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on top of another!”
  • And they asked him saying, Teacher, when then shall these things be; and what [is] the sign when these things are going to take place?
  • “Teacher,” they asked, “when will all this happen? What sign will show us that these things are about to take place?”
  • And he said, See that ye be not led astray, for many shall come in my name, saying, *I* am [he], and the time is drawn nigh: go ye not [therefore] after them.
  • He replied, “Don’t let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’b and saying, ‘The time has come!’ But don’t believe them.
  • And when ye shall hear of wars and tumults, be not terrified, for these things must first take place, but the end is not immediately.
  • And when you hear of wars and insurrections, don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place first, but the end won’t follow immediately.”
  • Witnessing to All Nations

    Then he said to them, Nation shall rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom;
  • Then he added, “Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
  • there shall be both great earthquakes in different places, and famines and pestilences; and there shall be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.
  • There will be great earthquakes, and there will be famines and plagues in many lands, and there will be terrifying things and great miraculous signs from heaven.
  • But before all these things they shall lay their hands upon you and persecute you, delivering [you] up to synagogues and prisons, bringing [you] before kings and governors on account of my name;
  • “But before all this occurs, there will be a time of great persecution. You will be dragged into synagogues and prisons, and you will stand trial before kings and governors because you are my followers.
  • but it shall turn out to you for a testimony.
  • But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me.c
  • Settle therefore in your hearts not to meditate beforehand [your] defence,
  • So don’t worry in advance about how to answer the charges against you,
  • for *I* will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your opposers shall not be able to reply to or resist.
  • for I will give you the right words and such wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to reply or refute you!
  • But ye will be delivered up even by parents and brethren and relations and friends, and they shall put to death [some] from among you,
  • Even those closest to you — your parents, brothers, relatives, and friends — will betray you. They will even kill some of you.
  • and ye will be hated of all for my name's sake.
  • And everyone will hate you because you are my followers.d
  • And a hair of your head shall in no wise perish.
  • But not a hair of your head will perish!
  • By your patient endurance gain your souls.
  • By standing firm, you will win your souls.
  • The Destruction of Jerusalem

    But when ye see Jerusalem encompassed with armies, then know that its desolation is drawn nigh.
  • “And when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you will know that the time of its destruction has arrived.
  • Then let those who are in Judaea flee to the mountains, and those who are in the midst of it depart out, and those who are in the country not enter into it;
  • Then those in Judea must flee to the hills. Those in Jerusalem must get out, and those out in the country should not return to the city.
  • for these are days of avenging, that all the things that are written may be accomplished.
  • For those will be days of God’s vengeance, and the prophetic words of the Scriptures will be fulfilled.
  • But woe to them that are with child and to them who give suck in those days, for there shall be great distress upon the land and wrath upon this people.
  • How terrible it will be for pregnant women and for nursing mothers in those days. For there will be disaster in the land and great anger against this people.
  • And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and be led captive into all the nations; and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of [the] nations until [the] times of [the] nations be fulfilled.
  • They will be killed by the sword or sent away as captives to all the nations of the world. And Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the period of the Gentiles comes to an end.
  • The Return of the Son of Man

    And there shall be signs in sun and moon and stars, and upon the earth distress of nations in perplexity [at] the roar of the sea and rolling waves,
  • “And there will be strange signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides.
  • men ready to die through fear and expectation of what is coming on the habitable earth, for the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.
  • People will be terrified at what they see coming upon the earth, for the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
  • And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
  • Then everyone will see the Son of Mane coming on a cloud with power and great glory.f
  • But when these things begin to come to pass, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws nigh.
  • So when all these things begin to happen, stand and look up, for your salvation is near!”
  • The lesson of the Fig Tree

    And he spoke a parable to them: Behold the fig-tree and all the trees;
  • Then he gave them this illustration: “Notice the fig tree, or any other tree.
  • when they already sprout, ye know of your own selves, [on] looking [at them], that already the summer is near.
  • When the leaves come out, you know without being told that summer is near.
  • So also *ye*, when ye see these things take place, know that the kingdom of God is near.
  • In the same way, when you see all these things taking place, you can know that the Kingdom of God is near.
  • Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall in no wise pass away until all come to pass.
  • I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from the scene until all these things have taken place.
  • The heaven and the earth shall pass away, but my words shall in no wise pass away.
  • Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.
  • Be Watchful

    But take heed to yourselves lest possibly your hearts be laden with surfeiting and drinking and cares of life, and that day come upon you suddenly unawares;
  • “Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware,
  • for as a snare shall it come upon all them that dwell upon the face of the whole earth.
  • like a trap. For that day will come upon everyone living on the earth.
  • Watch therefore, praying at every season, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things which are about to come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
  • Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.”
  • And by day he was teaching in the temple, and by night, going out, he remained abroad on the mountain called [the mount] of Olives;
  • Every day Jesus went to the Temple to teach, and each evening he returned to spend the night on the Mount of Olives.
  • and all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple to hear him.
  • The crowds gathered at the Temple early each morning to hear him.
