Darby Bible Translation

New American Standard Bible

  • Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet

Now before the feast of the passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come that he should depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, loved them to the end.
  • The Lord’s Supper

Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.
  • And during supper, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas [son] of Simon, Iscariote, that he should deliver him up,
  • During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him,
  • [Jesus,] knowing that the Father had given him all things into his hands, and that he came out from God and was going to God,
  • Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God,
  • rises from supper and lays aside his garments, and having taken a linen towel he girded himself:
  • got up from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself.
  • then he pours water into the washhand basin, and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them with the linen towel with which he was girded.

  • Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.
  • He comes therefore to Simon Peter; and *he* says to him, Lord, dost thou wash *my* feet?
  • So He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, “Lord, do You wash my feet?”
  • Jesus answered and said to him, What I do thou dost not know now, but thou shalt know hereafter.
  • Jesus answered and said to him, “What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand hereafter.”
  • Peter says to him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, Unless I wash thee, thou hast not part with me.
  • Peter said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”
  • Simon Peter says to him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
  • Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.”
  • Jesus says to him, He that is washed all over needs not to wash save his feet, but is wholly clean; and ye are clean, but not all.
  • Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.
  • For he knew him that delivered him up: on account of this he said, Ye are not all clean.
  • For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, “Not all of you are clean.”
  • When therefore he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, having sat down again, he said to them, Do ye know what I have done to you?
  • So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you?
  • Ye call me the Teacher and the Lord, and ye say well, for I am [so].
  • “You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am.
  • If I therefore, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another's feet;
  • “If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
  • for I have given you an example that, as I have done to you, ye should do also.
  • “For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.
  • Verily, verily, I say to you, The bondman is not greater than his lord, nor the sent greater than he who has sent him.
  • “Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him.
  • If ye know these things, blessed are ye if ye do them.
  • “If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
  • Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

I speak not of you all. I know those whom I have chosen; but that the scripture might be fulfilled, He that eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.
  • “I do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have chosen; but it is that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘HE WHO EATS MY BREAD HAS LIFTED UP HIS HEEL AGAINST ME.’
  • I tell you [it] now before it happens, that when it happens, ye may believe that I am [he].
  • “From now on I am telling you before it comes to pass, so that when it does occur, you may believe that I am He.
  • Verily, verily, I say to you, He who receives whomsoever I shall send receives me; and he that receives me receives him who has sent me.
  • “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”
  • Having said these things, Jesus was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, Verily, verily, I say to you, that one of you shall deliver me up.

  • Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

When Jesus had said this, He became troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, that one of you will betray Me.”
  • The disciples therefore looked one on another, doubting of whom he spoke.
  • The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss to know of which one He was speaking.
  • Now there was at table one of his disciples in the bosom of Jesus, whom Jesus loved.
  • There was reclining on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved.
  • Simon Peter makes a sign therefore to him to ask who it might be of whom he spoke.
  • So Simon Peter gestured to him, and said to him, “Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking.”
  • But he, leaning on the breast of Jesus, says to him, Lord, who is it?
  • He, leaning back thus on Jesus’ bosom, said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”
  • Jesus answers, He it is to whom I, after I have dipped the morsel, give it. And having dipped the morsel, he gives it to Judas [son] of Simon, Iscariote.
  • Jesus then answered, “That is the one for whom I shall dip the morsel and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the morsel, He took and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
  • And, after the morsel, then entered Satan into him. Jesus therefore says to him, What thou doest, do quickly.
  • After the morsel, Satan then entered into him. Therefore Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.”
  • But none of those at table knew why he said this to him;
  • Now no one of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose He had said this to him.
  • for some supposed, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus was saying to him, Buy the things of which we have need for the feast; or that he should give something to the poor.
  • For some were supposing, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, “Buy the things we have need of for the feast”; or else, that he should give something to the poor.
  • Having therefore received the morsel, he went out immediately; and it was night.
  • So after receiving the morsel he went out immediately; and it was night.
  • A New Command I Give You

When therefore he was gone out Jesus says, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
  • Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him;
  • If God be glorified in him, God also shall glorify him in himself, and shall glorify him immediately.
  • if God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately.
  • Children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me; and, as I said to the Jews, Where I go ye cannot come, I say to you also now.
  • “Little children, I am with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’
  • A new commandment I give to you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
  • “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
  • By this shall all know that ye are disciples of mine, if ye have love amongst yourselves.
  • “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
  • Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial

Simon Peter says to him, Lord, where goest thou? Jesus answered him, Where I go thou canst not follow me now, but thou shalt follow me after.
  • Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, “Where I go, you cannot follow Me now; but you will follow later.”
  • Peter says to him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thee.
  • Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You right now? I will lay down my life for You.”
  • Jesus answers, Thou wilt lay down thy life for me! Verily, verily, I say to thee, The cock shall not crow till thou hast denied me thrice.
  • Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.
