Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • Jesus' Betrayal and Arrest

Jesus, having said these things, went out with his disciples beyond the torrent Cedron, where was a garden, into which he entered, he and his disciples.
  • Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested

After saying these things, Jesus crossed the Kidron Valley with his disciples and entered a grove of olive trees.
  • And Judas also, who delivered him up, knew the place, because Jesus was often there, in company with his disciples.
  • Judas, the betrayer, knew this place, because Jesus had often gone there with his disciples.
  • Judas therefore, having got the band, and officers of the chief priests and Pharisees, comes there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
  • The leading priests and Pharisees had given Judas a contingent of Roman soldiers and Temple guards to accompany him. Now with blazing torches, lanterns, and weapons, they arrived at the olive grove.
  • Jesus therefore, knowing all things that were coming upon him, went forth and said to them, Whom seek ye?
  • Jesus fully realized all that was going to happen to him, so he stepped forward to meet them. “Who are you looking for?” he asked.
  • They answered him, Jesus the Nazaraean. Jesus says to them, I am [he]. And Judas also, who delivered him up, stood with them.
  • “Jesus the Nazarene,”a they replied.
“I Am he,”b Jesus said. (Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.)
  • When therefore he said to them, I am [he], they went away backward and fell to the ground.
  • As Jesus said “I Am he,” they all drew back and fell to the ground!
  • He demanded of them therefore again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus the Nazaraean.
  • Once more he asked them, “Who are you looking for?”
And again they replied, “Jesus the Nazarene.”
  • Jesus answered, I told you that I am [he]: if therefore ye seek me, let these go away;
  • “I told you that I Am he,” Jesus said. “And since I am the one you want, let these others go.”
  • that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, [As to] those whom thou hast given me, I have not lost one of them.
  • He did this to fulfill his own statement: “I did not lose a single one of those you have given me.”c
  • Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it, and smote the bondman of the high priest and cut off his right ear; and the bondman's name was Malchus.
  • Then Simon Peter drew a sword and slashed off the right ear of Malchus, the high priest’s slave.
  • Jesus therefore said to Peter, Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given me, shall I not drink it?
  • But Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back into its sheath. Shall I not drink from the cup of suffering the Father has given me?”
  • The band therefore, and the chiliarch, and the officers of the Jews, took Jesus and bound him:

  • Jesus at the High Priest’s House

So the soldiers, their commanding officer, and the Temple guards arrested Jesus and tied him up.
  • and they led him away to Annas first; for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
  • First they took him to Annas, since he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest at that time.d
  • But it was Caiaphas who counselled the Jews that it was better that one man should perish for the people.
  • Caiaphas was the one who had told the other Jewish leaders, “It’s better that one man should die for the people.”
  • Peter's First Denial

    Now Simon Peter followed Jesus, and the other disciple. But that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest;

  • Peter’s First Denial

Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another of the disciples. That other disciple was acquainted with the high priest, so he was allowed to enter the high priest’s courtyard with Jesus.
  • but Peter stood at the door without. The other disciple therefore, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the porteress and brought in Peter.
  • Peter had to stay outside the gate. Then the disciple who knew the high priest spoke to the woman watching at the gate, and she let Peter in.
  • The maid therefore, who was porteress, says to Peter, Art thou also of the disciples of this man? He says, I am not.
  • The woman asked Peter, “You’re not one of that man’s disciples, are you?”
“No,” he said, “I am not.”
  • But the bondmen and officers, having made a fire of coals (for it was cold), stood and warmed themselves; and Peter was standing with them and warming himself.
  • Because it was cold, the household servants and the guards had made a charcoal fire. They stood around it, warming themselves, and Peter stood with them, warming himself.
  • Jesus Before the High Priest

The high priest therefore demanded of Jesus concerning his disciples and concerning his doctrine.

  • The High Priest Questions Jesus

Inside, the high priest began asking Jesus about his followers and what he had been teaching them.
  • Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world; I taught always in [the] synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews come together, and in secret I have spoken nothing.
  • Jesus replied, “Everyone knows what I teach. I have preached regularly in the synagogues and the Temple, where the peoplee gather. I have not spoken in secret.
  • Why demandest thou of me? Demand of those who have heard, what I have spoken to them; behold, they know what I have said.
  • Why are you asking me this question? Ask those who heard me. They know what I said.”
  • But as he said these things, one of the officers who stood by gave a blow on the face to Jesus, saying, Answerest thou the high priest thus?
  • Then one of the Temple guards standing nearby slapped Jesus across the face. “Is that the way to answer the high priest?” he demanded.
  • Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why smitest thou me?
  • Jesus replied, “If I said anything wrong, you must prove it. But if I’m speaking the truth, why are you beating me?”
  • Annas [then] had sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
  • Then Annas bound Jesus and sent him to Caiaphas, the high priest.
  • Peter's Second and Third Denials

But Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, Art thou also of his disciples? He denied, and said, I am not.

  • Peter’s Second and Third Denials

Meanwhile, as Simon Peter was standing by the fire warming himself, they asked him again, “You’re not one of his disciples, are you?”
He denied it, saying, “No, I am not.”
  • One of the bondmen of the high priest, who was kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, says, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?
  • But one of the household slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Didn’t I see you out there in the olive grove with Jesus?”
  • Peter denied therefore again, and immediately [the] cock crew.
  • Again Peter denied it. And immediately a rooster crowed.
  • Jesus Before Pilate

They lead therefore Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium; and it was early morn. And *they* entered not into the praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but eat the passover.

  • Jesus’ Trial before Pilate

Jesus’ trial before Caiaphas ended in the early hours of the morning. Then he was taken to the headquarters of the Roman governor.f His accusers didn’t go inside because it would defile them, and they wouldn’t be allowed to celebrate the Passover.
  • Pilate therefore went out to them and said, What accusation do ye bring against this man?
  • So Pilate, the governor, went out to them and asked, “What is your charge against this man?”
  • They answered and said to him, If this [man] were not an evildoer, we should not have delivered him up to thee.
  • “We wouldn’t have handed him over to you if he weren’t a criminal!” they retorted.
  • Pilate therefore said to them, Take him, ye, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him, It is not permitted to us to put any one to death;
  • “Then take him away and judge him by your own law,” Pilate told them.
“Only the Romans are permitted to execute someone,” the Jewish leaders replied.
  • that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he spoke, signifying what death he should die.
  • (This fulfilled Jesus’ prediction about the way he would die.g)
  • Pilate therefore entered again into the praetorium and called Jesus, and said to him, Thou art the king of the Jews?
  • Then Pilate went back into his headquarters and called for Jesus to be brought to him. “Are you the king of the Jews?” he asked him.
  • Jesus answered [him], Dost thou say this of thyself, or have others said it to thee concerning me?
  • Jesus replied, “Is this your own question, or did others tell you about me?”
  • Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thy nation and the chief priests have delivered thee up to me: what hast thou done?
  • “Am I a Jew?” Pilate retorted. “Your own people and their leading priests brought you to me for trial. Why? What have you done?”
  • Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my servants had fought that I might not be delivered up to the Jews; but now my kingdom is not from hence.
  • Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.”
  • Pilate therefore said to him, Thou art then a king? Jesus answered, Thou sayest [it], that I am a king. I have been born for this, and for this I have come into the world, that I might bear witness to the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears my voice.
  • Pilate said, “So you are a king?”
Jesus responded, “You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.”
  • Pilate says to him, What is truth? And having said this he went out again to the Jews, and says to them, I find no fault whatever in him.
  • “What is truth?” Pilate asked. Then he went out again to the people and told them, “He is not guilty of any crime.
  • But ye have a custom that I release [some] one to you at the passover; will ye therefore that I release unto you the king of the Jews?
  • But you have a custom of asking me to release one prisoner each year at Passover. Would you like me to release this ‘King of the Jews’?”
  • They cried therefore again all, saying, Not this [man], but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
  • But they shouted back, “No! Not this man. We want Barabbas!” (Barabbas was a revolutionary.)
