Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • The Wedding at Cana

And on the third day a marriage took place in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.
  • The Wedding at Cana

The next daya there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there,
  • And Jesus also, and his disciples, were invited to the marriage.
  • and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration.
  • And wine being deficient, the mother of Jesus says to him, They have no wine.
  • The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no more wine.”
  • Jesus says to her, What have I to do with thee, woman? mine hour has not yet come.
  • “Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.”
  • His mother says to the servants, Whatever he may say to you, do.
  • But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
  • Now there were standing there six stone water-vessels, according to the purification of the Jews, holding two or three measures each.
  • Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons.b
  • Jesus says to them, Fill the water-vessels with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
  • Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled,
  • And he says to them, Draw out now, and carry [it] to the feast-master. And they carried [it].
  • he said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his instructions.
  • But when the feast-master had tasted the water which had been made wine (and knew not whence it was, but the servants knew who drew the water), the feast-master calls the bridegroom,
  • When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over.
  • and says to him, Every man sets on first the good wine, and when [men] have well drunk, then the inferior; thou hast kept the good wine till now.
  • “A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!”
  • This beginning of signs did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested his glory; and his disciples believed on him.
  • This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him.
  • Jesus Cleanses the Temple

After this he descended to Capernaum, he and his mother and his brethren and his disciples; and there they abode not many days.
  • After the wedding he went to Capernaum for a few days with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples.
  • And the passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

  • Jesus Clears the Temple

It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem.
  • And he found in the temple the sellers of oxen and sheep and doves, and the money-changers sitting;
  • In the Temple area he saw merchants selling cattle, sheep, and doves for sacrifices; he also saw dealers at tables exchanging foreign money.
  • and, having made a scourge of cords, he cast [them] all out of the temple, both the sheep and the oxen; and he poured out the change of the money-changers, and overturned the tables,
  • Jesus made a whip from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple. He drove out the sheep and cattle, scattered the money changers’ coins over the floor, and turned over their tables.
  • and said to the sellers of doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house a house of merchandise.
  • Then, going over to the people who sold doves, he told them, “Get these things out of here. Stop turning my Father’s house into a marketplace!”
  • [And] his disciples remembered that it is written, The zeal of thy house devours me.
  • Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: “Passion for God’s house will consume me.”c
  • The Jews therefore answered and said to him, What sign shewest thou to us, that thou doest these things?
  • But the Jewish leaders demanded, “What are you doing? If God gave you authority to do this, show us a miraculous sign to prove it.”
  • Jesus answered and said to them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
  • “All right,” Jesus replied. “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
  • The Jews therefore said, Forty and six years was this temple building, and thou wilt raise it up in three days?
  • “What!” they exclaimed. “It has taken forty-six years to build this Temple, and you can rebuild it in three days?”
  • But *he* spoke of the temple of his body.
  • But when Jesus said “this temple,” he meant his own body.
  • When therefore he was raised from among [the] dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and believed the scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.
  • After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered he had said this, and they believed both the Scriptures and what Jesus had said.
  • And when he was in Jerusalem, at the passover, at the feast, many believed on his name, beholding his signs which he wrought.

  • Jesus and Nicodemus

Because of the miraculous signs Jesus did in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration, many began to trust in him.
  • But Jesus himself did not trust himself to them, because he knew all [men],
  • But Jesus didn’t trust them, because he knew all about people.
  • and that he had not need that any should testify of man, for himself knew what was in man.
  • No one needed to tell him about human nature, for he knew what was in each person’s heart.
