Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • Jesus and Nicodemus

    But there was a man from among the Pharisees, his name Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews;
  • There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee.
  • he came to him by night, and said to him, Rabbi, we know that thou art come a teacher from God, for none can do these signs that thou doest unless God be with him.
  • After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.”
  • Jesus answered and said to him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except any one be born anew he cannot see the kingdom of God.
  • Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again,a you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”
  • Nicodemus says to him, How can a man be born being old? can he enter a second time into the womb of his mother and be born?
  • “What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?”
  • Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except any one be born of water and of Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
  • Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.b
  • That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
  • Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life.c
  • Do not wonder that I said to thee, It is needful that *ye* should be born anew.
  • So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘Youd must be born again.’
  • The wind blows where it will, and thou hearest its voice, but knowest not whence it comes and where it goes: thus is every one that is born of the Spirit.
  • The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.”
  • Nicodemus answered and said to him, How can these things be?
  • “How are these things possible?” Nicodemus asked.
  • Jesus answered and said to him, Thou art the teacher of Israel and knowest not these things!
  • Jesus replied, “You are a respected Jewish teacher, and yet you don’t understand these things?
  • Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that which we know, and we bear witness of that which we have seen, and ye receive not our witness.
  • I assure you, we tell you what we know and have seen, and yet you won’t believe our testimony.
  • If I have said the earthly things to you, and ye believe not, how, if I say the heavenly things to you, will ye believe?
  • But if you don’t believe me when I tell you about earthly things, how can you possibly believe if I tell you about heavenly things?
  • And no one has gone up into heaven, save he who came down out of heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven.
  • No one has ever gone to heaven and returned. But the Son of Mane has come down from heaven.
  • And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, thus must the Son of man be lifted up,
  • And as Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,
  • that every one who believes on him may [not perish, but] have life eternal.
  • so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life.f
  • For God So Loved

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whosoever believes on him may not perish, but have life eternal.
  • “For this is how God loved the world: He gaveg his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
  • For God has not sent his Son into the world that he may judge the world, but that the world may be saved through him.
  • God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.
  • He that believes on him is not judged: but he that believes not has been already judged, because he has not believed on the name of the only-begotten Son of God.
  • “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son.
  • And this is the judgment, that light is come into the world, and men have loved darkness rather than light; for their works were evil.
  • And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.
  • For every one that does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light that his works may not be shewn as they are;
  • All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed.
  • but he that practises the truth comes to the light, that his works may be manifested that they have been wrought in God.
  • But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.h
  • John's Testimony Concerning Jesus

After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he abode with them and baptised.

  • John the Baptist Exalts Jesus

Then Jesus and his disciples left Jerusalem and went into the Judean countryside. Jesus spent some time with them there, baptizing people.
  • And John also was baptising in Aenon, near Salim, because there was a great deal of water there; and they came to [him] and were baptised:
  • At this time John the Baptist was baptizing at Aenon, near Salim, because there was plenty of water there; and people kept coming to him for baptism.
  • for John was not yet cast into prison.
  • (This was before John was thrown into prison.)
  • There was therefore a reasoning of the disciples of John with a Jew about purification.
  • A debate broke out between John’s disciples and a certain Jewi over ceremonial cleansing.
  • And they came to John and said to him, Rabbi, he who was with thee beyond the Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, he baptises, and all come to him.
  • So John’s disciples came to him and said, “Rabbi, the man you met on the other side of the Jordan River, the one you identified as the Messiah, is also baptizing people. And everybody is going to him instead of coming to us.”
  • John answered and said, A man can receive nothing unless it be given him out of heaven.
  • John replied, “No one can receive anything unless God gives it from heaven.
  • Ye yourselves bear me witness that I said, I am not the Christ, but, that I am sent before him.
  • You yourselves know how plainly I told you, ‘I am not the Messiah. I am only here to prepare the way for him.’
  • He that has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices in heart because of the voice of the bridegroom: this my joy then is fulfilled.
  • It is the bridegroom who marries the bride, and the bridegroom’s friend is simply glad to stand with him and hear his vows. Therefore, I am filled with joy at his success.
  • He must increase, but I must decrease.
  • He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.
  • He who comes from above is above all. He who has his origin in the earth is of the earth, and speaks [as] of the earth. He who comes out of heaven is above all,
  • “He has come from above and is greater than anyone else. We are of the earth, and we speak of earthly things, but he has come from heaven and is greater than anyone else.j
  • [and] what he has seen and has heard, this he testifies; and no one receives his testimony.
  • He testifies about what he has seen and heard, but how few believe what he tells them!
  • He that has received his testimony has set to his seal that God is true;
  • Anyone who accepts his testimony can affirm that God is true.
  • for he whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives not the Spirit by measure.
  • For he is sent by God. He speaks God’s words, for God gives him the Spirit without limit.
  • The Father loves the Son, and has given all things [to be] in his hand.
  • The Father loves his Son and has put everything into his hands.
  • He that believes on the Son has life eternal, and he that is not subject to the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides upon him.
  • And anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life. Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry judgment.”
