Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • The Feeding of the Five Thousand

After these things Jesus went away beyond the sea of Galilee, [or] of Tiberias,
  • Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

After this, Jesus crossed over to the far side of the Sea of Galilee, also known as the Sea of Tiberias.
  • and a great crowd followed him, because they saw the signs which he wrought upon the sick.
  • A huge crowd kept following him wherever he went, because they saw his miraculous signs as he healed the sick.
  • And Jesus went up into the mountain, and there sat with his disciples:
  • Then Jesus climbed a hill and sat down with his disciples around him.
  • but the passover, the feast of the Jews, was near.
  • (It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration.)
  • Jesus then, lifting up his eyes and seeing that a great crowd is coming to him, says to Philip, Whence shall we buy loaves that these may eat?
  • Jesus soon saw a huge crowd of people coming to look for him. Turning to Philip, he asked, “Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?”
  • But this he said trying him, for he knew what he was going to do.
  • He was testing Philip, for he already knew what he was going to do.
  • Philip answered him, Loaves for two hundred denarii are not sufficient for them, that each may have some little [portion].
  • Philip replied, “Even if we worked for months, we wouldn’t have enough moneya to feed them!”
  • One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, says to him,
  • Then Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up.
  • There is a little boy here who has five barley loaves and two small fishes; but this, what is it for so many?
  • “There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?”
  • [And] Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place: the men therefore sat down, in number about five thousand.
  • “Tell everyone to sit down,” Jesus said. So they all sat down on the grassy slopes. (The men alone numbered about 5,000.)
  • And Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks, distributed [them] to those that were set down; and in like manner of the small fishes as much as they would.
  • Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and distributed them to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate as much as they wanted.
  • And when they had been filled, he says to his disciples, Gather together the fragments which are over and above, that nothing may be lost.
  • After everyone was full, Jesus told his disciples, “Now gather the leftovers, so that nothing is wasted.”
  • They gathered [them] therefore together, and filled twelve hand-baskets full of fragments of the five barley loaves, which were over and above to those that had eaten.
  • So they picked up the pieces and filled twelve baskets with scraps left by the people who had eaten from the five barley loaves.
  • The men therefore, having seen the sign which Jesus had done, said, This is truly the prophet which is coming into the world.
  • When the people saw himb do this miraculous sign, they exclaimed, “Surely, he is the Prophet we have been expecting!”c
  • Jesus therefore knowing that they were going to come and seize him, that they might make [him] king, departed again to the mountain himself alone.
  • When Jesus saw that they were ready to force him to be their king, he slipped away into the hills by himself.
  • Jesus Walks on Water

But when evening was come, his disciples went down to the sea,

  • Jesus Walks on Water

That evening Jesus’ disciples went down to the shore to wait for him.
  • and having gone on board ship, they went over the sea to Capernaum. And it had already become dark, and Jesus had not come to them,
  • But as darkness fell and Jesus still hadn’t come back, they got into the boat and headed across the lake toward Capernaum.
  • and the sea was agitated by a strong wind blowing.
  • Soon a gale swept down upon them, and the sea grew very rough.
  • Having rowed then about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they see Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the ship; and they were frightened.
  • They had rowed three or four milesd when suddenly they saw Jesus walking on the water toward the boat. They were terrified,
  • But he says to them, It is I: be not afraid.
  • but he called out to them, “Don’t be afraid. I am here!e
  • They were willing therefore to receive him into the ship; and immediately the ship was at the land to which they went.
  • Then they were eager to let him in the boat, and immediately they arrived at their destination!
  • On the morrow the crowd which stood on the other side of the sea, having seen that there was no other little ship there except that into which his disciples had got, and that Jesus had not gone with his disciples into the ship, but [that] his disciples had gone away alone;

  • Jesus, the Bread of Life

The next day the crowd that had stayed on the far shore saw that the disciples had taken the only boat, and they realized Jesus had not gone with them.
  • (but other little ships out of Tiberias came near to the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks;)
  • Several boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the Lord had blessed the bread and the people had eaten.
  • when therefore the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, *they* got into the ships, and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
  • So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went across to Capernaum to look for him.
  • And having found him the other side of the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when art thou arrived here?
  • They found him on the other side of the lake and asked, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”
  • Jesus the Bread of Life

Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say to you, Ye seek me not because ye have seen signs, but because ye have eaten of the loaves and been filled.
  • Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs.
  • Work not [for] the food which perishes, but [for] the food which abides unto life eternal, which the Son of man shall give to you; for him has the Father sealed, [even] God.
  • But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Manf can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval.”
  • They said therefore to him, What should we do that we may work the works of God?
  • They replied, “We want to perform God’s works, too. What should we do?”
  • Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom *he* has sent.
  • Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.”
  • They said therefore to him, What sign then doest thou that we may see and believe thee? what dost thou work?
  • They answered, “Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you. What can you do?
  • Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written, He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.
  • After all, our ancestors ate manna while they journeyed through the wilderness! The Scriptures say, ‘Moses gave them bread from heaven to eat.’g
  • Jesus therefore said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, [It is] not Moses that has given you the bread out of heaven; but my Father gives you the true bread out of heaven.
  • Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, Moses didn’t give you bread from heaven. My Father did. And now he offers you the true bread from heaven.
  • For the bread of God is he who comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world.
  • The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
  • They said therefore to him, Lord, ever give to us this bread.
  • “Sir,” they said, “give us that bread every day.”
  • [And] Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life: he that comes to me shall never hunger, and he that believes on me shall never thirst at any time.
  • Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
  • But I have said to you, that ye have also seen me and do not believe.
  • But you haven’t believed in me even though you have seen me.
  • All that the Father gives me shall come to me, and him that comes to me I will not at all cast out.
  • However, those the Father has given me will come to me, and I will never reject them.
  • For I am come down from heaven, not that I should do *my* will, but the will of him that has sent me.
  • For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will.
  • And this is the will of him that has sent me, that of all that he has given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up in the last day.
  • And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those he has given me, but that I should raise them up at the last day.
  • For this is the will of my Father, that every one who sees the Son, and believes on him, should have life eternal; and I will raise him up at the last day.
  • For it is my Father’s will that all who see his Son and believe in him should have eternal life. I will raise them up at the last day.”
  • The Jews therefore murmured about him, because he said, I am the bread which has come down out of heaven.
  • Then the peopleh began to murmur in disagreement because he had said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”
  • And they said, Is not this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we have known? how then does *he* say, I am come down out of heaven?
  • They said, “Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph? We know his father and mother. How can he say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”
  • Jesus therefore answered and said to them, Murmur not among yourselves.
  • But Jesus replied, “Stop complaining about what I said.
  • No one can come to me except the Father who has sent me draw him, and I will raise him up in the last day.
  • For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up.
  • It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every one that has heard from the Father [himself], and has learned [of him], comes to me;
  • As it is written in the Scriptures,i ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me.
  • not that any one has seen the Father, except he who is of God, he has seen the Father.
  • (Not that anyone has ever seen the Father; only I, who was sent from God, have seen him.)
  • Verily, verily, I say to you, He that believes [on me] has life eternal.
  • “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes has eternal life.
  • I am the bread of life.
  • Yes, I am the bread of life!
  • Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and died.
  • Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness, but they all died.
  • This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, that one may eat of it and not die.
  • Anyone who eats the bread from heaven, however, will never die.
  • I am the living bread which has come down out of heaven: if any one shall have eaten of this bread he shall live for ever; but the bread withal which I shall give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
  • I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever; and this bread, which I will offer so the world may live, is my flesh.”
  • The Jews therefore contended among themselves, saying, How can he give us this flesh to eat?
  • Then the people began arguing with each other about what he meant. “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” they asked.
  • Jesus therefore said to them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Unless ye shall have eaten the flesh of the Son of man, and drunk his blood, ye have no life in yourselves.
  • So Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you cannot have eternal life within you.
  • He that eats my flesh and drinks my blood has life eternal, and I will raise him up at the last day:
  • But anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise that person at the last day.
  • for my flesh is truly food and my blood is truly drink.
  • For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
  • He that eats my flesh and drinks my blood dwells in me and I in him.
  • Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.
  • As the living Father has sent me and I live on account of the Father, *he* also who eats me shall live also on account of me.
  • I live because of the living Father who sent me; in the same way, anyone who feeds on me will live because of me.
  • This is the bread which has come down out of heaven. Not as the fathers ate and died: he that eats this bread shall live for ever.
  • I am the true bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will not die as your ancestors did (even though they ate the manna) but will live forever.”
  • These things he said in [the] synagogue, teaching in Capernaum.
  • He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
  • Many Disciples Turn Away

Many therefore of his disciples having heard [it] said, This word is hard; who can hear it?

  • Many Disciples Desert Jesus

Many of his disciples said, “This is very hard to understand. How can anyone accept it?”
  • But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmur concerning this, said to them, Does this offend you?
  • Jesus was aware that his disciples were complaining, so he said to them, “Does this offend you?
  • If then ye see the Son of man ascending up where he was before?
  • Then what will you think if you see the Son of Man ascend to heaven again?
  • It is the Spirit which quickens, the flesh profits nothing: the words which I have spoken unto you are spirit and are life.
  • The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
  • But there are some of you who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would deliver him up.
  • But some of you do not believe me.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning which ones didn’t believe, and he knew who would betray him.)
  • And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no one can come to me unless it be given to him from the Father.
  • Then he said, “That is why I said that people can’t come to me unless the Father gives them to me.”
  • Peter's Confession of Faith

From that [time] many of his disciples went away back and walked no more with him.
  • At this point many of his disciples turned away and deserted him.
  • Jesus therefore said to the twelve, Will ye also go away?
  • Then Jesus turned to the Twelve and asked, “Are you also going to leave?”
  • Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast words of life eternal;
  • Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life.
  • and we have believed and known that thou art the holy one of God.
  • We believe, and we know you are the Holy One of God.j
  • Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you the twelve? and of you one is a devil.
  • Then Jesus said, “I chose the twelve of you, but one is a devil.”
  • Now he spoke of Judas [the son] of Simon, Iscariote, for he [it was who] should deliver him up, being one of the twelve.
  • He was speaking of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, one of the Twelve, who would later betray him.
