Darby Bible Translation

New King James Version

  • Jesus Delivers the Adulterous Woman

But Jesus went to the mount of Olives.
  • Jesus the Light of the World

But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
  • And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him; and he sat down and taught them.
  • Now [a]early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him; and He sat down and taught them.
  • And the scribes and the Pharisees bring [to him] a woman taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst,
  • Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst,
  • they say to him, Teacher, this woman has been taken in the very act, committing adultery.
  • they said to Him, “Teacher, [b]this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act.
  • Now in the law Moses has commanded us to stone such; thou therefore, what sayest thou?
  • Now [c]Moses, in the law, commanded us [d]that such should be stoned. But what do You [e]say?”
  • But this they said proving him, that they might have [something] to accuse him [of]. But Jesus, having stooped down, wrote with his finger on the ground.
  • This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, [f]as though He did not hear.
  • But when they continued asking him, he lifted himself up and said to them, Let him that is without sin among you first cast the stone at her.
  • So when they continued asking Him, He [g]raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.”
  • And again stooping down he wrote on the ground.
  • And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.
  • But they, having heard [that], went out one by one beginning from the elder ones until the last; and Jesus was left alone and the woman standing there.
  • Then those who heard it, being[h] convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
  • And Jesus, lifting himself up and seeing no one but the woman, said to her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? Has no one condemned thee?
  • When Jesus had raised Himself up [i]and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers [j]of yours? Has no one condemned you?”
  • And she said, No one, sir. And Jesus said to her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
  • She said, “No one, Lord.”
And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go [k]and sin no more.”
  • Jesus the Light of the World

Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world; he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
  • Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
  • The Pharisees therefore said to him, Thou bearest witness concerning thyself; thy witness is not true.
  • Jesus Defends His Self-Witness

The Pharisees therefore said to Him, “You bear witness of Yourself; Your witness is not [l]true.”
  • Jesus answered and said to them, Even if I bear witness concerning myself, my witness is true, because I know whence I came and whither I go: but ye know not whence I come and whither I go.
  • Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from and where I am going.
  • Ye judge according to the flesh, I judge no one.
  • You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.
  • And if also I judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who has sent me.
  • And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me.
  • And in your law too it is written that the testimony of two men is true:
  • It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true.
  • I am [one] who bear witness concerning myself, and the Father who has sent me bears witness concerning me.
  • I am One who bears witness of Myself, and the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me.”
  • They said to him therefore, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me nor my Father. If ye had known me, ye would have known also my Father.
  • Then they said to Him, “Where is Your Father?”
Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also.”
  • These words spoke he in the treasury, teaching in the temple; and no one took him, for his hour was not yet come.
  • These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one laid hands on Him, for His hour had not yet come.
  • He said therefore again to them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin; where I go ye cannot come.
  • Jesus Predicts His Departure

Then Jesus said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come.”
  • The Jews therefore said, Will he kill himself, that he says, Where I go ye cannot come?
  • So the Jews said, “Will He kill Himself, because He says, ‘Where I go you cannot come’?”
  • And he said to them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above. Ye are of this world; I am not of this world.
  • And He said to them, “You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
  • I said therefore to you, that ye shall die in your sins; for unless ye shall believe that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins.
  • Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”
  • They said therefore to him, Who art thou? [And] Jesus said to them, Altogether that which I also say to you.
  • Then they said to Him, “Who are You?”
And Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning.
  • I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but he that has sent me is true, and I, what I have heard from him, these things I say to the world.
  • I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I heard from Him.”
  • They knew not that he spoke to them of the Father.
  • They did not understand that He spoke to them of the Father.
  • Jesus therefore said to them, When ye shall have lifted up the Son of man, then ye shall know that I am [he], and [that] I do nothing of myself, but as the Father has taught me I speak these things.
  • Then Jesus said to them, “When you lift[m] up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things.
  • And he that has sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, because I do always the things that are pleasing to him.
  • And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him.”
  • As he spoke these things many believed on him.
  • As He spoke these words, many believed in Him.
  • The Truth will Set You Free

    Jesus therefore said to the Jews who believed him, If ye abide in my word, ye are truly my disciples;
  • The Truth Shall Make You Free

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.
  • and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.
  • And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
  • They answered him, We are Abraham's seed, and have never been under bondage to any one; how sayest thou, Ye shall become free?
  • They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?”
  • Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Every one that practises sin is the bondman of sin.
  • Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.
  • Now the bondman abides not in the house for ever: the son abides for ever.
  • And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever.
  • If therefore the Son shall set you free, ye shall be really free.
  • Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
  • I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word has no entrance in you.
  • Abraham’s Seed and Satan’s

“I know that you are Abraham’s descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you.
  • I speak what I have seen with my Father, and ye then do what ye have seen with your father.
  • I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have [n]seen with your father.”
  • They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father. Jesus says to them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham;
  • They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father.”
Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham.
  • but now ye seek to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you, which I have heard from God: this did not Abraham.
  • But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this.
  • Ye do the works of your father. They said [therefore] to him, We are not born of fornication; we have one father, God.
  • You do the deeds of your father.”
Then they said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; we have one Father — God.”
  • The Children of the Devil

Jesus said to them, If God were your father ye would have loved me, for I came forth from God and am come [from him]; for neither am I come of myself, but *he* has sent me.
  • Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me.
  • Why do ye not know my speech? Because ye cannot hear my word.
  • Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word.
  • Ye are of the devil, as [your] father, and ye desire to do the lusts of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks falsehood, he speaks of what is his own; for he is a liar and its father:
  • You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.
  • and because I speak the truth, ye do not believe me.
  • But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me.
  • Which of you convinces me of sin? If I speak truth, why do ye not believe me?
  • Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me?
  • He that is of God hears the words of God: therefore ye hear [them] not, because ye are not of God.
  • He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.”
  • Before Abraham Was, I Am

The Jews answered and said to him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan and hast a demon?
  • Before Abraham Was, I AM

Then the Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?”
  • Jesus answered, I have not a demon; but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me.
  • Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.
  • But I do not seek my own glory: there is he that seeks and judges.
  • And I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks and judges.
  • Verily, verily, I say unto you, If any one shall keep my word, he shall never see death.
  • Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.”
  • The Jews therefore said to him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham has died, and the prophets, and thou sayest, If any one keep my word, he shall never taste death.
  • Then the Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon! Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death.’
  • Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who has died? and the prophets have died: whom makest thou thyself?
  • Are You greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. Who do You make Yourself out to be?”
  • Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who glorifies me, [of] whom ye say, He is our God.
  • Jesus answered, “If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is [o]your God.
  • And ye know him not; but I know him; and if I said, I know him not, I should be like you, a liar. But I know him, and I keep his word.
  • Yet you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, ‘I do not know Him,’ I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him and keep His word.
  • Your father Abraham exulted in that he should see my day, and he saw and rejoiced.
  • Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.”
  • The Jews therefore said to him, Thou hast not yet fifty years, and hast thou seen Abraham?
  • Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?”
  • Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
  • Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”
  • They took up therefore stones that they might cast [them] at him; but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple, [going through the midst of them, and thus passed on.]
  • Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going[p] through the midst of them, and so passed by.
