Darby Bible Translation

New King James Version

  • The Dispute over Circumcision

And certain persons, having come down from Judaea, taught the brethren, If ye shall not have been circumcised according to the custom of Moses, ye cannot be saved.
  • Conflict over Circumcision

And certain men came down from Judea and taught the brethren, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.”
  • A commotion therefore having taken place, and no small discussion on the part of Paul and Barnabas against them, they arranged that Paul and Barnabas, and certain others from amongst them, should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders about this question.
  • Therefore, when Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and dispute with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain others of them should go up to Jerusalem, to the apostles and elders, about this question.
  • They therefore, having been set on their way by the assembly, passed through Phoenicia and Samaria, relating the conversion of [those of] the nations. And they caused great joy to all the brethren.
  • So, being sent on their way by the church, they passed through Phoenicia and Samaria, describing the conversion of the Gentiles; and they caused great joy to all the brethren.
  • And being arrived at Jerusalem, they were received by the assembly, and the apostles, and the elders, and related all that God had wrought with them.
  • And when they had come to Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the apostles and the elders; and they reported all things that God had done with them.
  • The Council at Jerusalem

And some of those who were of the sect of the Pharisees, who believed, rose up from among [them], saying that they ought to circumcise them and enjoin them to keep the law of Moses.
  • But some of the sect of the Pharisees who believed rose up, saying, “It is necessary to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.”
  • And the apostles and the elders were gathered together to see about this matter.
  • The Jerusalem Council

Now the apostles and elders came together to consider this matter.
  • And much discussion having taken place, Peter, standing up, said to them, Brethren, *ye* know that from the earliest days God amongst you chose that the nations by my mouth should hear the word of the glad tidings and believe.
  • And when there had been much dispute, Peter rose up and said to them: “Men and brethren, you know that a good while ago God chose among us, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe.
  • And the heart-knowing God bore them witness, giving [them] the Holy Spirit as to us also,
  • So God, who knows the heart, [a]acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us,
  • and put no difference between us and them, having purified their hearts by faith.
  • and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.
  • Now therefore why tempt ye God, by putting a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?
  • Now therefore, why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?
  • But we believe that we shall be saved by the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same manner as they also.
  • But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus [b]Christ we shall be saved in the same manner as they.”
  • And all the multitude kept silence and listened to Barnabas and Paul relating all the signs and wonders which God had wrought among the nations by them.
  • Then all the multitude kept silent and listened to Barnabas and Paul declaring how many miracles and wonders God had worked through them among the Gentiles.
  • And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Brethren, listen to me:
  • And after they had [c]become silent, James answered, saying, “Men and brethren, listen to me:
  • Simon has related how God first visited to take out of [the] nations a people for his name.
  • Simon has declared how God at the first visited the Gentiles to take out of them a people for His name.
  • And with this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written:
  • And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written:
  • After these things I will return, and will rebuild the tabernacle of David which is fallen, and will rebuild its ruins, and will set it up,
  • ‘After this I will return
    And will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down;
    I will rebuild its ruins,
    And I will set it up;
  • so that the residue of men may seek out the Lord, and all the nations on whom my name is invoked, saith [the] Lord, who does these things
  • So that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord,
Even all the Gentiles who are called by My name,
Says the [d]Lord who does all these things.’
  • known from eternity.
  • [e]“Known to God from eternity are all His works.
  • Wherefore *I* judge, not to trouble those who from the nations turn to God;
  • Therefore I judge that we should not trouble those from among the Gentiles who are turning to God,
  • but to write to them to abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from what is strangled, and from blood.
  • but that we write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from [f]sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood.
  • For Moses, from generations of old, has in every city those who preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath.
  • For Moses has had throughout many generations those who preach him in every city, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath.”
  • The Letter to the Gentile Believers

Then it seemed good to the apostles and to the elders, with the whole assembly, to send chosen men from among them with Paul and Barnabas to Antioch, Judas called Barsabas and Silas, leading men among the brethren,
  • The Jerusalem Decree

Then it pleased the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas, namely, Judas who was also named Barsabas,[g] and Silas, leading men among the brethren.
  • having by their hand written [thus]: The apostles, and the elders, and the brethren, to the brethren who are from among [the] nations at Antioch, and [in] Syria and Cilicia, greeting:
  • They wrote this letter by them:
The apostles, the elders, and the brethren,
To the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia:
    Greetings.
  • Inasmuch as we have heard that some who went out from amongst us have troubled you by words, upsetting your souls, [saying that ye must be circumcised and keep the law]; to whom we gave no commandment;
  • Since we have heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, [h]saying, “You must be circumcised and keep the law” — to whom we gave no such commandment —
  • it seemed good to us, having arrived at a common judgment, to send chosen men to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,
  • it seemed good to us, being assembled with one [i]accord, to send chosen men to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,
  • men who have given up their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who themselves also will tell you by word [of mouth] the same things.
  • We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who will also report the same things by word of mouth.
  • For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things:
  • For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things:
  • to abstain from things sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what is strangled, and from fornication; keeping yourselves from which ye will do well. Farewell.
  • that you abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual[j] immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well.
    Farewell.
  • The Believers at Antioch Rejoice

They therefore, being let go, came to Antioch, and having gathered the multitude delivered to [them] the epistle.
  • Continuing Ministry in Syria

So when they were sent off, they came to Antioch; and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the letter.
  • And having read it, they rejoiced at the consolation.
  • When they had read it, they rejoiced over its encouragement.
  • And Judas and Silas, being themselves also prophets, exhorted the brethren with much discourse, and strengthened them.
  • Now Judas and Silas, themselves being prophets also, exhorted and strengthened the brethren with many words.
  • And having passed some time [there], they were let go in peace from the brethren to those who sent them.
  • And after they had stayed there for a time, they were sent back with greetings from the brethren to [k]the apostles.
