New Living Translation

  • Ananias and Sapphira

But a certain man, Ananias by name, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
  • Ananias and Sapphira

But there was a certain man named Ananias who, with his wife, Sapphira, sold some property.
  • and put aside for himself part of the price, [his] wife also being privy to it; and having brought a certain part, laid it at the feet of the apostles.
  • He brought part of the money to the apostles, claiming it was the full amount. With his wife’s consent, he kept the rest.
  • But Peter said, Ananias, why has Satan filled thy heart that thou shouldest lie to the Holy Spirit, and put aside for thyself a part of the price of the estate?
  • Then Peter said, “Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself.
  • While it remained did it not remain to *thee*? and sold, was [it not] in thine own power? Why is it that thou hast purposed this thing in thine heart? Thou hast not lied to men, but to God.
  • The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren’t lying to us but to God!”
  • And Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and expired. And great fear came upon all who heard [it].
  • As soon as Ananias heard these words, he fell to the floor and died. Everyone who heard about it was terrified.
  • And the young men, rising up, swathed him up for burial, and having carried him out, buried him.
  • Then some young men got up, wrapped him in a sheet, and took him out and buried him.
  • And it came to pass about three hours afterwards, that his wife, not knowing what had happened, came in.
  • About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
  • And Peter answered her, Tell me if ye gave the estate for so much? And she said, Yes, for so much.
  • Peter asked her, “Was this the price you and your husband received for your land?”
“Yes,” she replied, “that was the price.”
  • And Peter said to her, Why [is it] that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of [the] Lord? Lo, the feet of those that have buried thy husband [are] at the door, and they shall carry thee out.
  • And Peter said, “How could the two of you even think of conspiring to test the Spirit of the Lord like this? The young men who buried your husband are just outside the door, and they will carry you out, too.”
  • And she fell down immediately at his feet and expired. And when the young men came in they found her dead; and, having carried her out, they buried her by her husband.
  • Instantly, she fell to the floor and died. When the young men came in and saw that she was dead, they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
  • And great fear came upon all the assembly, and upon all who heard these things.
  • Great fear gripped the entire church and everyone else who heard what had happened.
  • The Apostles Heal Many

And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders done among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch,

  • The Apostles Heal Many

The apostles were performing many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers were meeting regularly at the Temple in the area known as Solomon’s Colonnade.
  • but of the rest durst no man join them, but the people magnified them;
  • But no one else dared to join them, even though all the people had high regard for them.
  • and believers were more than ever added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women;)
  • Yet more and more people believed and were brought to the Lord — crowds of both men and women.
  • so that they brought out the sick into the streets and put [them] on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Peter, when he came, might overshadow some one of them.
  • As a result of the apostles’ work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall across some of them as he went by.
  • And the multitude also of the cities round about came together to Jerusalem, bringing sick persons and persons beset by unclean spirits, who were all healed.
  • Crowds came from the villages around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those possessed by evila spirits, and they were all healed.
  • The Apostles Arrested and Freed

And the high priest rising up, and all they that were with him, which is the sect of the Sadducees, were filled with wrath,

  • The Apostles Meet Opposition

The high priest and his officials, who were Sadducees, were filled with jealousy.
  • and laid hands on the apostles and put them in the public prison.
  • They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.
  • But an angel of [the] Lord during the night opened the doors of the prison, and leading them out, said,
  • But an angel of the Lord came at night, opened the gates of the jail, and brought them out. Then he told them,
  • Go ye and stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.
  • “Go to the Temple and give the people this message of life!”
  • And when they heard it, they entered very early into the temple and taught. And when the high priest was come, and they that were with him, they called together the council and all the elderhood of the sons of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.
  • So at daybreak the apostles entered the Temple, as they were told, and immediately began teaching.
When the high priest and his officials arrived, they convened the high councilb — the full assembly of the elders of Israel. Then they sent for the apostles to be brought from the jail for trial.
  • And when the officers were come, they did not find them in the prison; and returned and reported
  • But when the Temple guards went to the jail, the men were gone. So they returned to the council and reported,
  • saying, We found the prison shut with all security, and the keepers standing at the doors; but when we had opened [them], within we found no one.
  • “The jail was securely locked, with the guards standing outside, but when we opened the gates, no one was there!”
  • The Apostles Before the Council

And when they heard these words, both the priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests were in perplexity as to them, what this would come to.
  • When the captain of the Temple guard and the leading priests heard this, they were perplexed, wondering where it would all end.
  • And some one coming reported to them, Lo, the men whom ye put in the prison are in the temple, standing and teaching the people.
  • Then someone arrived with startling news: “The men you put in jail are standing in the Temple, teaching the people!”
  • Then the captain, having gone with the officers, brought them, not with violence, for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned.
  • The captain went with his Temple guards and arrested the apostles, but without violence, for they were afraid the people would stone them.
  • And they bring them and set them in the council. And the high priest asked them,
  • Then they brought the apostles before the high council, where the high priest confronted them.
  • saying, We strictly enjoined you not to teach in this name: and lo, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and purpose to bring upon us the blood of this man.
  • “We gave you strict orders never again to teach in this man’s name!” he said. “Instead, you have filled all Jerusalem with your teaching about him, and you want to make us responsible for his death!”
  • But Peter answering, and the apostles, said, God must be obeyed rather than men.
  • But Peter and the apostles replied, “We must obey God rather than any human authority.
  • The God of our fathers has raised up Jesus, whom *ye* have slain, having hanged on a cross.
  • The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead after you killed him by hanging him on a cross.c
  • Him has God exalted by his right hand as leader and saviour, to give repentance to Israel and remission of sins.
  • Then God put him in the place of honor at his right hand as Prince and Savior. He did this so the people of Israel would repent of their sins and be forgiven.
  • And *we* are [his] witnesses of these things, and the Holy Spirit also, which God has given to those that obey him.
  • We are witnesses of these things and so is the Holy Spirit, who is given by God to those who obey him.”
  • Gamaliel's Counsel

But they, when they heard [these things], were cut to the heart, and took counsel to kill them.
  • When they heard this, the high council was furious and decided to kill them.
  • But a certain [man], a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, held in honour of all the people, rose up in the council, and commanded to put the men out for a short while,
  • But one member, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, who was an expert in religious law and respected by all the people, stood up and ordered that the men be sent outside the council chamber for a while.
  • and said to them, Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves as regards these men what ye are going to do;
  • Then he said to his colleagues, “Men of Israel, take care what you are planning to do to these men!
  • for before these days Theudas rose up, alleging himself to be somebody, to whom a number of men, about four hundred, were joined; who was slain, and all, as many as obeyed him, were dispersed and came to nothing.
  • Some time ago there was that fellow Theudas, who pretended to be someone great. About 400 others joined him, but he was killed, and all his followers went their various ways. The whole movement came to nothing.
  • After him rose Judas the Galilean in the days of the census, and drew away [a number of] people after him; and *he* perished, and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered abroad.
  • After him, at the time of the census, there was Judas of Galilee. He got people to follow him, but he was killed, too, and all his followers were scattered.
  • And now I say to you, Withdraw from these men and let them alone, for if this counsel or this work have its origin from men, it will be destroyed;
  • “So my advice is, leave these men alone. Let them go. If they are planning and doing these things merely on their own, it will soon be overthrown.
  • but if it be from God, ye will not be able to put them down, lest ye be found also fighters against God.
  • But if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You may even find yourselves fighting against God!”
  • And they listened to his advice; and having called the apostles, they beat them, and enjoined them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and dismissed them.
  • The others accepted his advice. They called in the apostles and had them flogged. Then they ordered them never again to speak in the name of Jesus, and they let them go.
  • They therefore went their way from [the] presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to be dishonoured for the name.
  • The apostles left the high council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus.d
  • And every day, in the temple and in the houses, they ceased not teaching and announcing the glad tidings that Jesus [was] the Christ.
  • And every day, in the Temple and from house to house, they continued to teach and preach this message: “Jesus is the Messiah.”
