Stephen Addresses the Sanhedrin
And the high priest said, Are these things then so?
And the high priest said, Are these things then so?
Запитав тоді первосвященик: „Чи це так?“
And he said, Brethren and fathers, hearken. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,
Степан же промовив: „Послухайте, мужі-браття й отці! Бог слави з'явивсь Авраамові, отцеві нашому, як він у Месопота́мії був, перше ніж оселився в Хара́ні,
and said to him, Go out of thy land and out of thy kindred, and come into the land which I will shew thee.
і промовив до нього: „Вийди із своєї землі та від роду свого, та й піди до землі, що тобі покажу́“.
Then going out of the land of the Chaldeans he dwelt in Charran, and thence, after his father died, he removed him into this land in which *ye* now dwell.
Тоді він вийшов із землі халдейської, та й оселився в Хара́ні. А звідти, як умер йому ба́тько, Він переселив його в землю оцю, що на ній ви живе́те тепер.
And he did not give him an inheritance in it, not even what his foot could stand on; and promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when he had no child.
Та спа́дщини на ній Він не дав йому навіть на крок, але обіцяв „дати її на володі́ння йому й його ро́дові по нім“, хоч дитини не мав він.
And God spoke thus: His seed shall be a sojourner in a strange land, and they shall enslave them and evil entreat [them] four hundred years;
І сказав Бог отак, що насіння його буде прихо́дьком у кра́ї чужому, і понево́лять його, і будуть гноби́ти чотириста ро́ків.
and the nation to which they shall be in bondage will *I* judge, said God; and after these things they shall come forth and serve me in this place.
„Але Я — сказав Бог — буду судити наро́д, що його понево́лить. Опісля́ ж вони вийдуть, і будуть служити Мені на цім місці“.
And he gave to him [the] covenant of circumcision; and thus he begat Isaac and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac Jacob, and Jacob the twelve patriarchs.
І дав Він йому заповіта обрі́зання. І породив так Ісака, і во́сьмого дня він обрізав його. А Ісак породив Якова, а Яків — дванадцятьо́х патріярхів.
And the patriarchs, envying Joseph, sold him away into Egypt. And God was with him,
А ті патріярхи поза́здрили Йо́сипові, і продали́ його до Єгипту. Але Бог був із ним,
and delivered him out of all his tribulations, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he appointed him chief over Egypt and all his house.
і його визволив від усіх його у́тисків, і дав йому благода́ть та мудрість перед фараоном, царем єгипетським, а він настановив його за правителя над Єгиптом та всім своїм домом.
But a famine came upon all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great distress, and our fathers found no food.
А як голод прийшов на всю землю єгипетську та ханаа́нську, та велика біда, то пожи́ви тоді не знахо́дили наші батьки́.
But Jacob, having heard of there being corn in Egypt, sent out our fathers first;
Коли ж Яків зачув, що в Єгипті є збіжжя, то послав батьків наших уперше.
and the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren, and the family of Joseph became known to Pharaoh.
А як удруге посла́в, то був пі́знаний Йо́сип братами своїми́, і фараонові знаний став Йо́сипів рід.
And Joseph sent and called down to him his father Jacob and all [his] kindred, seventy-five souls.
Тоді Йо́сип послав, щоб покликати Якова, ба́тька свого, та всю родину свою — сімдеся́т і п'ять душ.
And Jacob went down into Egypt and died, he and our fathers,
І пода́вся Яків в Єгипет, та й умер там він сам та наші батьки.
and were carried over to Sychem and placed in the sepulchre which Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the [father] of Sychem.
І їх перене́сли в Сихе́м, і покла́ли до гробу, що Авраам був купив за ці́ну срібла від синів Еммора Сихемового.
But as the time of promise drew near which God had promised to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt,
А коли наближа́всь час обі́тниці, що нею Бог клявсь Авраамові, розрісся наро́д і намно́жився в Єгипті,
until another king over Egypt arose who did not know Joseph.
аж поки настав інший цар ув Єгипті, що не знав уже Йо́сипа.
*He* dealt subtilly with our race, and evil entreated the fathers, casting out their infants that they might not live.
Він хитро наш люд обманив, і силою змушував наших отців викидати дітей своїх, щоб вони не лишались живі.
In which time Moses was born, and was exceedingly lovely, who was nourished three months in the house of his father.
Того ча́су родився Мойсей, і га́рний він був перед Богом. Він годо́ваний був у домі батька свойо́го три місяці.
And when he was cast out, the daughter of Pharaoh took him up, and brought him up for herself [to be] for a son.
А коли він був ви́кинений, то дочка фараона забрала його, та й за сина собі його викохала.
And Moses was instructed in all [the] wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.
І Мойсей був навче́ний всієї премудрости єгипетської, і був міцни́й у словах та в ділах своїх.
And when a period of forty years was fulfilled to him, it came into his heart to look upon his brethren, the sons of Israel;
А коли йому спо́внилося сорок ро́ків, йому спало на серце відві́дати братів своїх, синів Ізраїлевих.
and seeing a certain one wronged, he defended [him], and avenged him that was being oppressed, smiting the Egyptian.
Як угле́дів же він, що одно́му з них ді́ється кривда, заступився, і відомсти́в за окри́вдженого, убивши єги́птянина.
For he thought that his brethren would understand that God by his hand was giving them deliverance. But they understood not.
Він же ду́мав, що брати́ розуміють, що рукою його Бог дає їм визво́лення, та не зрозуміли вони.
And on the morrow he shewed himself to them as they were contending, and compelled them to peace, saying, *Ye* are brethren, why do ye wrong one another?
А наступного дня, як сварились вони, він з'явився й хотів погоди́ти їх, кажучи: „Люди, ви — браття, чого один о́дного кривдите?“
But he that was wronging his neighbour thrust him away, saying, Who established thee ruler and judge over us?
А той, що ближнього кривдив, його відіпхну́в та сказав: „Хто наставив над нами тебе за старшо́го й суддю?
Dost *thou* wish to kill me as thou killedst the Egyptian yesterday?
Чи хочеш убити й мене, як учора вбив ти єги́птянина?“
And Moses fled at this saying, and became a sojourner in the land of Madiam, where he begat two sons.
І втік Мойсей через слово оце, і стався прихо́дьком у землі мадія́мській, де зродив двох синів.
And when forty years were fulfilled, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sinai, in a flame of fire of a bush.
А коли сорок ро́ків проминуло, то з'явивсь йому Ангол Господній у по́лум'ї куща́ огняно́го в пустині Сінайської гори.
And Moses seeing it wondered at the vision; and as he went up to consider it, there was a voice of [the] Lord,
А Мойсей, як побачив, дивувався з видіння. А коли підійшов, щоб розглянути, був голос Господній до нього:
*I* am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob. And Moses trembled, and durst not consider [it].
„Я Бог отців твоїх, — Бог Авраамів, і Бог Ісаків, і Бог Яковів!“ І затрусився Мойсей, і не відваживсь погля́нути...
And the Lord said to him, Loose the sandal of thy feet, for the place on which thou standest is holy ground.
І промовив до нього Господь: „Скинь взуття́ з своїх ніг, бо те місце, на якому стоїш, то святая земля!
I have surely seen the ill treatment of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groan, and have come down to take them out of it; and now, come, I will send thee to Egypt.
Добре бачив Я у́тиск наро́ду Свого, що в Єгипті, і стогін його Я почув, і зійшов, щоб їх ви́зволити. Тепер ось іди, — Я пошлю до Єгипту тебе“.
This Moses, whom they refused, saying, Who made thee ruler and judge? him did God send [to be] a ruler and deliverer with the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
Цього Мойсея, що його відцурались вони, сказавши: „Хто наставив тебе за старшо́го й суддю“, цього Бог через Ангола, якому з'явився в кущі, послав за старшо́го й визво́льника.
*He* led them out, having wrought wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
Він їх вивів, чуда й знаме́на вчинивши в землі єгипетській, і на Червоному морі, і сорок ро́ків у пустині.
This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, A prophet shall God raise up to you out of your brethren like me [him shall ye hear].
Це той Мойсей, що прорік Ізраїлевим синам: „Госпо́дь Бог вам підійме Пророка від ваших братів, як мене, — Його слухайте!“
This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him in the mount Sinai, and with our fathers; who received living oracles to give to us;
Це той, що в пустині на зборах був з Анголом, який промовляв йому на Сінайській горі, та з отцями нашими, і що прийняв він живі слова́, щоб їх нам передати;
to whom our fathers would not be subject, but thrust [him] from them, and in their hearts turned back to Egypt,
що його не хотіли отці наші слу́хати, але відіпхнули, і звернулися серцем своїм до Єгипту,
saying to Aaron, Make us gods who shall go before us; for this Moses, who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we know not what has happened to him.
промовивши до Ааро́на: „Зроби нам богів, які йшли б перед нами, бо не знаємо, що́ сталося з тим Мойсеєм, який вивів нас із кра́ю єгипетського“.
And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
І зробили вони тими днями теля, — і бовва́нові жертви прино́сили та веселилися з діл своїх рук.
But God turned and delivered them up to serve the host of heaven; as it is written in [the] book of the prophets, Have ye offered me victims and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
Але Бог відвернувся від них, і попусти́в їх вклонятися силі небесній, як написано в книзі Пророків: „Чи зако́лення й жертви Мені ви прино́сили сорок ро́ків у пустині, о доме Ізраїлів?
Yea, ye took up the tent of Moloch, and the star of [your] god Remphan, the forms which ye made to do homage to them; and I will transport you beyond Babylon.
Ви ж носили наме́та Моло́хового, і зорю вашого бога Ромфа́на, зображення, що їх ви зробили, щоб вклонятися їм. Через те запрова́джу вас аж за Вавилон!“
Our fathers had the tent of the testimony in the wilderness, as he that spoke to Moses commanded to make it according to the model which he had seen;
У наших отців на пустині була скинія свідо́цтва, як Той ізвелів, Хто Мойсею казав, щоб зробив її за зразком, якого він бачив.
which also our fathers, receiving from their predecessors, brought in with Joshua when they entered into possession of [the lands of] the nations, whom God drove out from [the] face of our fathers, until the days of David;
Її наші отці й узяли, і вне́сли з Ісусом у землю наро́дів, яких вигнав Бог з-перед обличчя наших отців, аж до ча́су Давида.
who found favour before God, and asked to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob;
Він у Бога знайшов благода́ть, і просив, щоб оселю знайти для Бога Якова.
But the Most High dwells not in [places] made with hands; as says the prophet,
Але не в рукотворнім Всевишній живе, як говорить пророк:
The heaven [is] my throne and the earth the footstool of my feet: what house will ye build me? saith [the] Lord, or where [is the] place of my rest?
„Мені небо — престол, а земля — то підніжок ногам Моїм! Який Мені дім ви збудуєте, — говорить Господь, — або місце яке для Мого відпочинку?
O stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, *ye* do always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers, *ye* also.
О ви, твердошиї, люди серця й вух необрізаних! Ви за́вжди противитесь Духові Святому, як ваші батьки, так і ви!
Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain those who announced beforehand concerning the coming of the Just One, of whom *ye* have now become deliverers up and murderers!
Котро́го з пророків батьки ваші не переслідували? Вони ж тих повбивали, хто звіщав прихід Праведного, Якому тепер ви сталися зрадниками та убійниками,
who have received the law as ordained by [the] ministry of angels, and have not kept [it].
ви, що Зако́на оде́ржали через зарядження Анголів, та не зберігали його!“
The Stoning of Stephen
And hearing these things they were cut to the heart, and gnashed their teeth against him.

Як зачули ж оце, вони запали́лися гнівом у серцях своїх, і скрегота́ли зубами на нього.
But being full of [the] Holy Spirit, having fixed his eyes on heaven, he saw [the] glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,
А Степан, повний Духа Святого, на небо споглянув, — і побачив Божу славу й Ісуса, що по Божій правиці стояв,
and said, Lo, I behold the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God.
і промовив: „Ось я бачу відчи́нене небо, і Сина Лю́дського, що по Божій правиці стоїть!“
And they cried out with a loud voice, and held their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord;
Та вони гучни́м голосом стали кричати та ву́ха собі затуляти, та й кинулися однодушно на нього!...
and having cast [him] out of the city, they stoned [him]. And the witnesses laid aside their clothes at the feet of a young man called Saul.
І за місто вони його ви́вели, і зачали́ побивати камінням його. А свідки плащі свої склали в ногах юнака́, який звався Са́влом.
And they stoned Stephen, praying, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
І побивали камінням Степа́на, що молився й казав: „Господи Ісусе, — прийми духа мого!“
