Darby Bible Translation

English Standard Version

  • Greetings from Peter

    Simon Peter, bondman and apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have received like precious faith with us through [the] righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ:
  • Greeting

    Simeona Peter, a servantb and apostle of Jesus Christ,
    To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
  • Grace and peace be multiplied to you in [the] knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
  • May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
  • Make Your Calling Sure

    As his divine power has given to us all things which relate to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that has called us by glory and virtue,
  • Confirm Your Calling and Election

    His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us toc his own glory and excellence,d
  • through which he has given to us the greatest and precious promises, that through these ye may become partakers of [the] divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
  • by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.
  • But for this very reason also, using therewith all diligence, in your faith have also virtue, in virtue knowledge,
  • For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue,e and virtue with knowledge,
  • in knowledge temperance, in temperance endurance, in endurance godliness,
  • and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness,
  • in godliness brotherly love, in brotherly love love:
  • and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.
  • for these things existing and abounding in you make [you] to be neither idle nor unfruitful as regards the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ;
  • For if these qualitiesf are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • for he with whom these things are not present is blind, short-sighted, and has forgotten the purging of his former sins.
  • For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.
  • Wherefore the rather, brethren, use diligence to make your calling and election sure, for doing these things ye will never fall;
  • Therefore, brothers,g be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.
  • for thus shall the entrance into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ be richly furnished unto you.
  • For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
  • Remember These Things

    Wherefore I will be careful to put you always in mind of these things, although knowing [them] and established in the present truth.
  • Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have.
  • But I account it right, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting [you] in remembrance,
  • I think it right, as long as I am in this body,h to stir you up by way of reminder,
  • knowing that the putting off of my tabernacle is speedily [to take place], as also our Lord Jesus Christ has manifested to me;
  • since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.
  • but I will use diligence, that after my departure ye should have also, at any time, [in your power] to call to mind these things.
  • And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.
  • We were Eyewitnesses

    For we have not made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, following cleverly imagined fables, but having been eyewitnesses of *his* majesty.
  • Christ’s Glory and the Prophetic Word

    For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
  • For he received from God [the] Father honour and glory, such a voice being uttered to him by the excellent glory: This is my beloved Son, in whom *I* have found my delight;
  • For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son,i with whom I am well pleased,”
  • and this voice *we* heard uttered from heaven, being with him on the holy mountain.
  • we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.
  • And we have the prophetic word [made] surer, to which ye do well taking heed (as to a lamp shining in an obscure place) until [the] day dawn and [the] morning star arise in your hearts;
  • And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,
  • knowing this first, that [the scope of] no prophecy of scripture is had from its own particular interpretation,
  • knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation.
  • for prophecy was not ever uttered by [the] will of man, but holy men of God spake under the power of [the] Holy Spirit.
  • For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
