Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • Clean and Unclean Animals

    Ye are sons of Jehovah your God: ye shall not cut yourselves, nor make any baldness between your eyes for a dead person.
  • Ceremonially Clean and Unclean Animals

    “Since you are the people of the LORD your God, never cut yourselves or shave the hair above your foreheads in mourning for the dead.
  • For thou art a holy people unto Jehovah thy God, and thee hath Jehovah chosen for a people of possession unto himself, out of all the peoples that are upon the face of the earth.
  • You have been set apart as holy to the LORD your God, and he has chosen you from all the nations of the earth to be his own special treasure.
  • Thou shalt not eat any abominable thing.
  • “You must not eat any detestable animals that are ceremonially unclean.
  • These are the beasts which ye shall eat: the ox, the sheep, and the goat;
  • These are the animalsa you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat,
  • the hart, and the gazelle, and the stag, and the wild goat, and the dishon and the oryx, and the wild sheep.
  • the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the addax, the antelope, and the mountain sheep.
  • And every beast that hath cloven hoofs, and the feet quite split open into double hoofs, [and] which cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that ye shall eat.
  • “You may eat any animal that has completely split hooves and chews the cud,
  • Only these ye shall not eat of those that chew the cud, or of those with hoofs cloven and split open: the camel, and the hare, and the rock-badger; for they chew the cud, but have not cloven hoofs -- they shall be unclean unto you;
  • but if the animal doesn’t have both, it may not be eaten. So you may not eat the camel, the hare, or the hyrax.b They chew the cud but do not have split hooves, so they are ceremonially unclean for you.
  • and the swine, for it hath cloven hoofs, yet cheweth not the cud -- it shall be unclean unto you. Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch.
  • And you may not eat the pig. It has split hooves but does not chew the cud, so it is ceremonially unclean for you. You may not eat the meat of these animals or even touch their carcasses.
  • These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales shall ye eat;
  • “Of all the marine animals, you may eat whatever has both fins and scales.
  • but whatsoever hath not fins and scales ye shall not eat: it shall be unclean unto you.
  • You may not, however, eat marine animals that do not have both fins and scales. They are ceremonially unclean for you.
  • All clean birds shall ye eat.
  • “You may eat any bird that is ceremonially clean.
  • But these are they of which ye shall not eat: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the sea-eagle,
  • These are the birds you may not eat: the griffon vulture, the bearded vulture, the black vulture,
  • and the falcon, and the kite, and the black kite after its kind;
  • the kite, the falcon, buzzards of all kinds,
  • and every raven after its kind;
  • ravens of all kinds,
  • and the female ostrich, and the male ostrich, and the sea-gull, and the hawk after its kind;
  • the eagle owl, the short-eared owl, the seagull, hawks of all kinds,
  • the owl, and the ibis and the swan,
  • the little owl, the great owl, the barn owl,
  • and the pelican, and the carrion vulture, and the gannet,
  • the desert owl, the Egyptian vulture, the cormorant,
  • and the stork, and the heron after its kind, and the hoopoe, and the bat.
  • the stork, herons of all kinds, the hoopoe, and the bat.
  • And every winged crawling thing shall be unclean unto you; they shall not be eaten.
  • “All winged insects that walk along the ground are ceremonially unclean for you and may not be eaten.
  • All clean fowls shall ye eat.
  • But you may eat any winged bird or insect that is ceremonially clean.
  • Ye shall eat of no carcase; thou shalt give it unto the stranger that is within thy gates, that he may eat it, or sell it unto a foreigner; for thou art a holy people to Jehovah thy God. Thou shalt not boil a kid in its mother's milk.
  • “You must not eat anything that has died a natural death. You may give it to a foreigner living in your town, or you may sell it to a stranger. But do not eat it yourselves, for you are set apart as holy to the LORD your God.
    “You must not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.
  • Giving Tithes

    Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, the produce of the field, year by year.

  • The Giving of Tithes

    “You must set aside a tithe of your crops — one-tenth of all the crops you harvest each year.
  • And thou shalt eat before Jehovah thy God, in the place which he will choose to cause his name to dwell there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy new wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear Jehovah thy God continually.
  • Bring this tithe to the designated place of worship — the place the LORD your God chooses for his name to be honored — and eat it there in his presence. This applies to your tithes of grain, new wine, olive oil, and the firstborn males of your flocks and herds. Doing this will teach you always to fear the LORD your God.
  • And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it, because the place is too far from thee, which Jehovah thy God will choose to set his name there, when Jehovah thy God blesseth thee;
  • “Now when the LORD your God blesses you with a good harvest, the place of worship he chooses for his name to be honored might be too far for you to bring the tithe.
  • then shalt thou give it for money, and bind the money together in thy hand, and go to the place which Jehovah thy God will choose,
  • If so, you may sell the tithe portion of your crops and herds, put the money in a pouch, and go to the place the LORD your God has chosen.
  • and thou shalt give the money for whatever thy soul desireth, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatever thy soul asketh of thee; and thou shalt eat there before Jehovah thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thy house.
  • When you arrive, you may use the money to buy any kind of food you want — cattle, sheep, goats, wine, or other alcoholic drink. Then feast there in the presence of the LORD your God and celebrate with your household.
  • And thou shalt not forsake the Levite that is within thy gates; for he hath no portion nor inheritance with thee.
  • And do not neglect the Levites in your town, for they will receive no allotment of land among you.
  • At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up within thy gates;
  • “At the end of every third year, bring the entire tithe of that year’s harvest and store it in the nearest town.
  • and the Levite -- for he hath no portion nor inheritance with thee -- and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, that are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that Jehovah thy God may bless thee in all the work of thy hand which thou doest.
  • Give it to the Levites, who will receive no allotment of land among you, as well as to the foreigners living among you, the orphans, and the widows in your towns, so they can eat and be satisfied. Then the LORD your God will bless you in all your work.
