Laws of Fairness

If there be a controversy between men, and they resort to judgment, and they judge [their case]; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked.

Коли буде сварка між людьми, і вони прийдуть до суду, і стануть судити їх, то нехай праведного оправдають а винуватого осудять.

2

And it shall be if the wicked man have deserved to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and be beaten before his face, according to the measure of his wickedness with a certain number [of stripes].

І коли винуватий заслужить на кару тїлесну, то нехай звелить суддя положити його, і скарати його на тїлї перед своїми очима, відповідно до провини його.

3

With forty [stripes] shall they beat him; they shall not exceed, lest, if they continue to beat him with many stripes above these, thy brother become despicable in thine eyes.

Сорок раз ударити його можна, не більше; щоб, як бити ме його більше раз над сї, брат твій не був понижений перед очима твоїми.

4

Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out [the corn].

Не завязуй роту в вола, що молотить.

Widowhood and Marriage

If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no son, the wife of the dead shall not marry a stranger abroad: her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him as wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother unto her.

Коли брати жили вкупі і один з них умер і в його нема сина, то не годиться жінцї мертвого йти заміж за чужого чоловіка; дївер її мусить увійти до неї і взяти собі її за жінку, щоб сповнити, що має чинити дївер.

And it shall be, that the firstborn that she beareth shall stand in the name of his brother who is dead, that his name be not blotted out from Israel.

І первенець, що вродить вона, прийме імя мертвого брата, щоб не зникло з Ізраїля імя його.

7

But if the man like not to take his brother's wife, his brother's wife shall go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My husband's brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel: he will not perform for me the duty of a husband's brother.

Коли ж сьому чоловікові та не хочеться побратись з жінкою брата свого, так пійде вона до воріт громадських мужів і скаже: Мій швагер не хоче востановити імя свого брата в Ізраїлї; він не хоче, як швагер, сповнити обовязку свого.

Then the elders of his city shall call him and speak unto him; and if he stand to it and say, I like not to take her;

І громадські мужі мусять покликати його і сказати йому, що треба;

9

then shall his brother's wife come near to him before the eyes of the elders, and draw his sandal from his foot, and spit in his face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto the man that will not build up his brother's house.

Як же упреться він і скаже: Менї не хочеться з нею побратись, тодї приступить до його швагрова його перед очима громадських мужів, і знїме з ноги його обувє і плюне йому в лице і скаже: Так обходяться з чоловіком, що не хоче збудувати дім братові свому.

10

And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him that hath his shoe drawn off.

І буде імя його в Ізраїлї: Дім босого.

When men fight together one with another, and the wife of the one come near to rescue her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and stretch out her hand, and seize him by his secret parts,

Коли два чоловіка бються, чоловік із братом, а жінка котрого з їх прибіжить, щоб визволити чоловіка свого спід руки того, що бє його, і простягне руку та й вхопить його соромне тіло:

12

thou shalt cut off her hand; thine eye shall not spare.

12

Так одрубаєш їй руку; не помилують її очі твої.

Standard Weights and Measures

Thou shalt not have in thy bag divers weights, a great and a small.

13

Не буде в тебе в саквах подвійного каміння для ваги, великого й малого.

14

Thou shalt not have in thy house divers ephahs, a great and a small.

14

Не буде в тебе в господї подвійної ефи, великої і малої.

15

A perfect and just weight shalt thou have; a perfect and just ephah shalt thou have; that thy days may be prolonged in the land that Jehovah thy God giveth thee.

15

Правдиве і вірне каміння для ваги буде в тебе, і правдива і вірна ефа буде в тебе, щоб довго ти жив на сьвітї, на тій землї, що тобі дає Господь, Бог твій.

16

For every one that doeth such things, every one that doeth unrighteousness, is an abomination to Jehovah thy God.

16

Гидота бо перед Господом, Богом твоїм, кожний, хто таке робить, кожний, хто другого кривдить.

17

Blot Out Amalek

Remember what Amalek did unto thee on the way, when ye came forth out of Egypt;

17

Памятай, що вчинив з тобою Амалик в дорозї, по виходї з Египту,

18

how he met thee on the way, and smote the hindmost of thee, all the feeble that lagged behind thee, when thou wast faint and weary, and he feared not God.

18

Як він зустрів тебе в дорозї та й порозбивав твої задні лави, всїх малосильних позад тебе; як ти утомився і охляв; і він Бога не боявся.

19

And it shall be, when Jehovah thy God shall have given thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land that Jehovah thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens; thou shalt not forget it.

І коли Господь, Бог твій, заспокоїть тебе від усїх ворогів округи, у землї, що Господь, Бог твій, дає тобі в наслїддє і державу, тодї мусиш ти стерти спід небес память про Амалика. Не забудь про се!
