Darby Bible Translation

New King James Version

  • The Song of Moses

    Give ear, ye heavens, and I will speak; And hear, O earth, the words of my mouth!
  • The Song of Moses

    “Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak;
    And hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.
  • My doctrine shall drop as rain, My speech flow down as dew, As small rain upon the tender herb, And as showers on the grass.
  • Let my [a]teaching drop as the rain,
    My speech distill as the dew,
    As raindrops on the tender herb,
    And as showers on the grass.
  • For the name of Jehovah will I proclaim: Ascribe greatness unto our God!
  • For I proclaim the name of the Lord:
    Ascribe greatness to our God.
  • [He is] the Rock, his work is perfect, For all his ways are righteousness; A God of faithfulness without deceit, Just and right is he.
  • He is the Rock, His work is perfect;
    For all His ways are justice,
    A God of truth and without injustice;
    Righteous and upright is He.
  • They have dealt corruptly with him; Not his children's is their spot: -- A crooked and perverted generation!
  • “They have corrupted themselves;
    They are not His children,
    Because of their blemish:
    A perverse and crooked generation.
  • Do ye thus requite Jehovah, Foolish and unwise people? Is not he thy father that hath bought thee? Hath he not made thee and established thee?
  • Do you thus deal[b] with the Lord,
    O foolish and unwise people?
    Is He not your Father, who bought you?
    Has He not made you and established you?
  • Remember the days of old, Consider the years of generation to generation; Ask thy father, and he will shew thee; Thine elders, and they will tell thee.
  • “Remember the days of old,
    Consider the years of many generations.
    Ask your father, and he will show you;
    Your elders, and they will tell you:
  • When the Most High assigned to the nations their inheritance, When he separated the sons of Adam, He set the bounds of the peoples According to the number of the children of Israel.
  • When the Most High divided their inheritance to the nations,
    When He separated the sons of Adam,
    He set the boundaries of the peoples
    According to the number of the [c]children of Israel.
  • For Jehovah's portion is his people; Jacob the lot of his inheritance.
  • For the Lord’s portion is His people;
    Jacob is the place of His inheritance.
  • He found him in a desert land, And in the waste, howling wilderness; He compassed him about, he watched over him, He preserved him as the apple of his eye.
  • “He found him in a desert land
    And in the wasteland, a howling wilderness;
    He encircled him, He instructed him,
    He kept him as the [d]apple of His eye.
  • As the eagle stirreth up its nest, Hovereth over its young, Spreadeth out its wings, Taketh them, beareth them on its feathers,
  • As an eagle stirs up its nest,
    Hovers over its young,
    Spreading out its wings, taking them up,
    Carrying them on its wings,
  • So Jehovah alone did lead him, And no strange god [was] with him.
  • So the Lord alone led him,
    And there was no foreign god with him.
  • He made him ride on the high places of the earth, And he ate the produce of the field; And he made him suck honey out of the crag, And oil out of the flinty rock;
  • “He made him ride in the heights of the earth,
    That he might eat the produce of the fields;
    He made him draw honey from the rock,
    And oil from the flinty rock;
  • Cream of kine, and milk of sheep, With the fat of lambs, And rams of the breed of Bashan, and he-goats, With the fat of kidneys of wheat; And thou didst drink pure wine, the blood of the grape.
  • Curds from the cattle, and milk of the flock,
    With fat of lambs;
    And rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats,
    With the choicest wheat;
    And you drank wine, the blood of the grapes.
  • Then Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked -- Thou art waxen fat, Thou art grown thick, And thou art covered with fatness; -- He gave up +God who made him, And lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.
  • “But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked;
    You grew fat, you grew thick,
    You are obese!
    Then he forsook God who made him,
    And scornfully esteemed the Rock of his salvation.
  • They moved him to jealousy with strange gods, With abominations did they provoke him to anger.
  • They provoked Him to jealousy with foreign gods;
    With [e]abominations they provoked Him to anger.
  • They sacrificed unto demons who are not +God; To gods whom they knew not, To new ones, who came newly up, Whom your fathers revered not.
  • They sacrificed to demons, not to God,
    To gods they did not know,
    To new gods, new arrivals
    That your fathers did not fear.
  • Of the Rock that begot thee wast thou unmindful, And thou hast forgotten God who brought thee forth.
  • Of the Rock who begot you, you are unmindful,
    And have forgotten the God who fathered you.
  • And Jehovah saw it, and despised them, Because of the provoking of his sons and of his daughters.
  • “And when the Lord saw it, He spurned them,
    Because of the provocation of His sons and His daughters.
  • And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be; For they are a perverse generation, Children in whom is no faithfulness.
  • And He said: ‘I will hide My face from them,
    I will see what their end will be,
    For they are a perverse generation,
    Children in whom is no faith.
  • They have moved me to jealousy with that which is no God; They have exasperated me with their vanities; And I will move them to jealousy with that which is not a people; With a foolish nation will I provoke them to anger.
  • They have provoked Me to jealousy by what is not God;
    They have moved Me to anger by their [f]foolish idols.
    But I will provoke them to jealousy by those who are not a nation;
    I will move them to anger by a foolish nation.
  • For a fire is kindled in mine anger, And it shall burn into the lowest Sheol, And shall consume the earth and its produce, And set fire to the foundations of the mountains.
  • For a fire is kindled in My anger,
    And shall burn to the [g]lowest [h]hell;
    It shall consume the earth with her increase,
    And set on fire the foundations of the mountains.
  • I will heap mischiefs upon them; Mine arrows will I spend against them.
  • ‘I will heap disasters on them;
    I will spend My arrows on them.
  • They shall be consumed with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, And with poisonous pestilence; And the teeth of beasts will I send against them, With the poison of what crawleth in the dust.
  • They shall be wasted with hunger,
    Devoured by pestilence and bitter destruction;
    I will also send against them the teeth of beasts,
    With the poison of serpents of the dust.
  • From without shall the sword bereave them, and in the chambers, terror -- Both the young man and the virgin, The suckling with the man of gray hairs.
  • The sword shall destroy outside;
    There shall be terror within
    For the young man and virgin,
    The nursing child with the man of gray hairs.
  • I would say, I will scatter, I will make the remembrance of them to cease from among men,
  • I would have said, “I will dash them in pieces,
    I will make the memory of them to cease from among men,”
  • If I did not fear provocation from the enemy, Lest their adversaries should misunderstand it, Lest they should say, Our hand is high, and Jehovah has not done all this.
  • Had I not feared the wrath of the enemy,
    Lest their adversaries should misunderstand,
    Lest they should say, “Our hand is high;
    And it is not the Lord who has done all this.” ’
  • For they are a nation void of counsel, And understanding is not in them.
  • “For they are a nation void of counsel,
    Nor is there any understanding in them.
  • Oh that they had been wise! they would have understood this, They would have considered their latter end!
  • Oh, that they were wise, that they understood this,
    That they would consider their latter end!
  • How could one chase a thousand, And two put ten thousand to flight, Were it not that their Rock had sold them, And Jehovah had delivered them up?
  • How could one chase a thousand,
    And two put ten thousand to flight,
    Unless their Rock had sold them,
    And the Lord had surrendered them?
  • For their rock is not as our Rock: Let our enemies themselves be judges.
  • For their rock is not like our Rock,
    Even our enemies themselves being judges.
  • For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, And of the fields of Gomorrah: Their grapes are grapes of poison, Bitter are their clusters;
  • For their vine is of the vine of Sodom
    And of the fields of Gomorrah;
    Their grapes are grapes of gall,
    Their clusters are bitter.
  • Their wine is the poison of dragons, And the cruel venom of vipers.
  • Their wine is the poison of serpents,
    And the cruel venom of cobras.
  • Is not this hidden with me, Sealed up among my treasures?
  • Is this not laid up in store with Me,
    Sealed up among My treasures?
  • Vengeance is mine, and recompense, For the time when their foot shall slip. For the day of their calamity is at hand, And the things that shall come upon them make haste.
  • Vengeance is Mine, and recompense;
    Their foot shall slip in due time;
    For the day of their calamity is at hand,
    And the things to come hasten upon them.’
  • For Jehovah will judge his people, And shall repent in favour of his servants; When he seeth that power is gone, And there is none shut up or left.
  • “For the Lord will judge His people
    And have compassion on His servants,
    When He sees that their power is gone,
    And there is no one remaining, bond or free.
  • And he shall say, Where are their gods, Their rock in whom they trusted,
  • He will say: ‘Where are their gods,
    The rock in which they sought refuge?
  • Who ate the fat of their sacrifices, [And] drank the wine of their drink-offering? Let them rise up and help you, That there may be a protection over you.
  • Who ate the fat of their sacrifices,
    And drank the wine of their drink offering?
    Let them rise and help you,
    And be your refuge.
  • See now that I, I am HE, And there is no god with me; I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal, And there is none that delivereth out of my hand,
  • ‘Now see that I, even I, am He,
    And there is no God besides Me;
    I kill and I make alive;
    I wound and I heal;
    Nor is there any who can deliver from My hand.
  • For I lift up my hand to the heavens, and say, I live for ever!
  • For I raise My hand to heaven,
    And say, “As I live forever,
  • If I have sharpened my gleaming sword, And my hand take hold of judgment, I will render vengeance to mine adversaries, And will recompense them that hate me.
  • If I [i]whet My glittering sword,
    And My hand takes hold on judgment,
    I will render vengeance to My enemies,
    And repay those who hate Me.
  • Mine arrows will I make drunk with blood, And my sword shall devour flesh; [I will make them drunk] with the blood of the slain and of the captives, With the head of the princes of the enemy.
  • I will make My arrows drunk with blood,
    And My sword shall devour flesh,
    With the blood of the slain and the captives,
    From the heads of the leaders of the enemy.” ’
  • Shout for joy, ye nations, with his people, For he avengeth the blood of his servants, And rendereth vengeance to his enemies, And maketh atonement for his land, for his people.
  • “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His [j]people;
    For He will avenge the blood of His servants,
    And render vengeance to His adversaries;
    He will provide atonement for His land and His people.”
  • And Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he and Hoshea the son of Nun.
  • So Moses came with [k]Joshua the son of Nun and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people.
  • And when Moses had ended speaking all these words to all Israel,
  • Moses finished speaking all these words to all Israel,
  • he said unto them, Set your hearts unto all the words that I testify among you this day, which ye shall command your children to take heed to do, all the words of this law.
  • and he said to them: “Set your hearts on all the words which I testify among you today, which you shall command your children to be careful to observe — all the words of this law.
  • For it is no vain word for you, but it is your life, and through this word ye shall prolong your days on the land whereunto ye pass over the Jordan to possess it.
  • For it is not a [l]futile thing for you, because it is your life, and by this word you shall prolong your days in the land which you cross over the Jordan to possess.”
  • Moses' Death Foretold

    And Jehovah spoke to Moses that same day, saying,
  • Moses to Die on Mount Nebo

    Then the Lord spoke to Moses that very same day, saying:
  • Go up into this mountain Abarim, mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, which is opposite Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession,
  • “Go up this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, across from Jericho; view the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel as a possession;
  • and die on the mountain whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy peoples, as Aaron thy brother died on mount Hor, and was gathered unto his peoples;
  • and die on the mountain which you ascend, and be [m]gathered to your people, just as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people;
  • because ye trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah-Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because ye hallowed me not in the midst of the children of Israel.
  • because you trespassed against Me among the children of Israel at the waters of [n]Meribah Kadesh, in the Wilderness of Zin, because you did not hallow Me in the midst of the children of Israel.
  • For thou shalt see the land before [thee]; but thou shalt not go thither unto the land which I give the children of Israel.
  • Yet you shall see the land before you, though you shall not go there, into the land which I am giving to the children of Israel.”
