Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • A Remnant of Israel

I say then, Has God cast away his people? Far be the thought. For *I* also am an Israelite, of [the] seed of Abraham, of [the] tribe of Benjamin.
  • God’s Mercy on Israel

I ask, then, has God rejected his own people, the nation of Israel? Of course not! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham and a member of the tribe of Benjamin.
  • God has not cast away his people whom he foreknew. Know ye not what the scripture says in [the history of] Elias, how he pleads with God against Israel?
  • No, God has not rejected his own people, whom he chose from the very beginning. Do you realize what the Scriptures say about this? Elijah the prophet complained to God about the people of Israel and said,
  • Lord, they have killed thy prophets, they have dug down thine altars; and *I* have been left alone, and they seek my life.
  • “LORD, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me, too.”a
  • But what says the divine answer to him? I have left to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed knee to Baal.
  • And do you remember God’s reply? He said, “No, I have 7,000 others who have never bowed down to Baal!”b
  • Thus, then, in the present time also there has been a remnant according to election of grace.
  • It is the same today, for a few of the people of Israelc have remained faithful because of God’s grace — his undeserved kindness in choosing them.
  • But if by grace, no longer of works: since [otherwise] grace is no more grace.
  • And since it is through God’s kindness, then it is not by their good works. For in that case, God’s grace would not be what it really is — free and undeserved.
  • What [is it] then? What Israel seeks for, that he has not obtained; but the election has obtained, and the rest have been blinded,
  • So this is the situation: Most of the people of Israel have not found the favor of God they are looking for so earnestly. A few have — the ones God has chosen — but the hearts of the rest were hardened.
  • according as it is written, God has given to them a spirit of slumber, eyes not to see, and ears not to hear, unto this day.
  • As the Scriptures say,
“God has put them into a deep sleep.
To this day he has shut their eyes so they do not see,
and closed their ears so they do not hear.”d
  • And David says, Let their table be for a snare, and for a gin, and for a fall-trap, and for a recompense to them:
  • Likewise, David said,
“Let their bountiful table become a snare,
a trap that makes them think all is well.
Let their blessings cause them to stumble,
and let them get what they deserve.
  • let their eyes be darkened not to see, and bow down their back alway.
  • Let their eyes go blind so they cannot see,
and let their backs be bent forever.”e
  • The Ingrafting of the Gentiles

I say then, Have they stumbled in order that they might fall? Far be the thought: but by their fall [there is] salvation to the nations to provoke them to jealousy.
  • Did God’s people stumble and fall beyond recovery? Of course not! They were disobedient, so God made salvation available to the Gentiles. But he wanted his own people to become jealous and claim it for themselves.
  • But if their fall [be the] world's wealth, and their loss [the] wealth of [the] nations, how much rather their fulness?
  • Now if the Gentiles were enriched because the people of Israel turned down God’s offer of salvation, think how much greater a blessing the world will share when they finally accept it.
  • For I speak to you, the nations, inasmuch as *I* am apostle of nations, I glorify my ministry;
  • I am saying all this especially for you Gentiles. God has appointed me as the apostle to the Gentiles. I stress this,
  • if by any means I shall provoke to jealousy [them which are] my flesh, and shall save some from among them.
  • for I want somehow to make the people of Israel jealous of what you Gentiles have, so I might save some of them.
  • For if their casting away [be the] world's reconciliation, what [their] reception but life from among [the] dead?
  • For since their rejection meant that God offered salvation to the rest of the world, their acceptance will be even more wonderful. It will be life for those who were dead!
  • Now if the first-fruit [be] holy, the lump also; and if the root [be] holy, the branches also.
  • And since Abraham and the other patriarchs were holy, their descendants will also be holy — just as the entire batch of dough is holy because the portion given as an offering is holy. For if the roots of the tree are holy, the branches will be, too.
  • Now if some of the branches have been broken out, and *thou*, being a wild olive tree, hast been grafted in amongst them, and hast become a fellow-partaker of the root and of the fatness of the olive tree,
  • But some of these branches from Abraham’s tree — some of the people of Israel — have been broken off. And you Gentiles, who were branches from a wild olive tree, have been grafted in. So now you also receive the blessing God has promised Abraham and his children, sharing in the rich nourishment from the root of God’s special olive tree.
  • boast not against the branches; but if thou boast, [it is] not *thou* bearest the root, but the root thee.
  • But you must not brag about being grafted in to replace the branches that were broken off. You are just a branch, not the root.
  • Thou wilt say then, The branches have been broken out in order that *I* might be grafted in.
  • “Well,” you may say, “those branches were broken off to make room for me.”
  • Right: they have been broken out through unbelief, and *thou* standest through faith. Be not high-minded, but fear:
  • Yes, but remember — those branches were broken off because they didn’t believe in Christ, and you are there because you do believe. So don’t think highly of yourself, but fear what could happen.
  • if God indeed has not spared the natural branches; lest it might be he spare not thee either.
  • For if God did not spare the original branches, he won’tf spare you either.
  • Behold then [the] goodness and severity of God: upon them who have fallen, severity; upon thee goodness of God, if thou shalt abide in goodness, since [otherwise] *thou* also wilt be cut away.
  • Notice how God is both kind and severe. He is severe toward those who disobeyed, but kind to you if you continue to trust in his kindness. But if you stop trusting, you also will be cut off.
  • And *they* too, if they abide not in unbelief, shall be grafted in; for God is able again to graft them in.
  • And if the people of Israel turn from their unbelief, they will be grafted in again, for God has the power to graft them back into the tree.
  • For if *thou* hast been cut out of the olive tree wild by nature, and, contrary to nature, hast been grafted into the good olive tree, how much rather shall they, who are according to nature be grafted into their own olive tree?
  • You, by nature, were a branch cut from a wild olive tree. So if God was willing to do something contrary to nature by grafting you into his cultivated tree, he will be far more eager to graft the original branches back into the tree where they belong.
  • All Israel Shall Be Saved

    For I do not wish you to be ignorant, brethren, of this mystery, that ye may not be wise in your own conceits, that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the nations be come in;

  • God’s Mercy Is for Everyone

I want you to understand this mystery, dear brothers and sisters,g so that you will not feel proud about yourselves. Some of the people of Israel have hard hearts, but this will last only until the full number of Gentiles comes to Christ.
  • and so all Israel shall be saved. According as it is written, The deliverer shall come out of Zion; he shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob.
  • And so all Israel will be saved. As the Scriptures say,
“The one who rescues will come from Jerusalem,h
and he will turn Israeli away from ungodliness.
  • And this is the covenant from me to them, when I shall have taken away their sins.
  • And this is my covenant with them,
that I will take away their sins.”j
  • As regards the glad tidings, [they are] enemies on your account; but as regards election, beloved on account of the fathers.
  • Many of the people of Israel are now enemies of the Good News, and this benefits you Gentiles. Yet they are still the people he loves because he chose their ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
  • For the gifts and the calling of God [are] not subject to repentance.
  • For God’s gifts and his call can never be withdrawn.
  • For as indeed *ye* [also] once have not believed in God, but now have been objects of mercy through the unbelief of *these*;
  • Once, you Gentiles were rebels against God, but when the people of Israel rebelled against him, God was merciful to you instead.
  • so these also have now not believed in your mercy, in order that *they* also may be objects of mercy.
  • Now they are the rebels, and God’s mercy has come to you so that they, too, will sharek in God’s mercy.
  • For God hath shut up together all in unbelief, in order that he might shew mercy to all.
  • For God has imprisoned everyone in disobedience so he could have mercy on everyone.
  • Doxology

O depth of riches both of [the] wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable his judgments, and untraceable his ways!
  • Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways!
  • For who has known [the] mind of [the] Lord, or who has been his counsellor?
  • For who can know the LORD’s thoughts?
Who knows enough to give him advice?l
  • or who has first given to him, and it shall be rendered to him?
  • And who has given him so much
that he needs to pay it back?m
  • For of him, and through him, and for him [are] all things: to him be glory for ever. Amen.
  • For everything comes from him and exists by his power and is intended for his glory. All glory to him forever! Amen.
