Darby Bible Translation

New King James Version

  • Warnings from Israel's Past

    For I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
  • Old Testament Examples

    Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea,
  • and all were baptised unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
  • all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,
  • and all ate the same spiritual food,
  • all ate the same spiritual food,
  • and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank of a spiritual rock which followed [them]: (now the rock was the Christ;)
  • and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.
  • yet God was not pleased with the most of them, for they were strewed in the desert.
  • But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.
  • But these things happened [as] types of us, that we should not be lusters after evil things, as they also lusted.
  • Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted.
  • Neither be ye idolaters, as some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.
  • And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.”
  • Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed fornication, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.
  • Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell;
  • Neither let us tempt the Christ, as some of them tempted, and perished by serpents.
  • nor let us [a]tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents;
  • Neither murmur ye, as some of them murmured, and perished by the destroyer.
  • nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer.
  • Now all these things happened to them [as] types, and have been written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.
  • Now [b]all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our [c]admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
  • So that let him that thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.
  • Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.
  • No temptation has taken you but such as is according to man's nature; and God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above what ye are able [to bear], but will with the temptation make the issue also, so that [ye] should be able to bear [it].
  • No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to [d]bear it.
  • Flee from Idolatry

    Wherefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
  • Flee from Idolatry

    Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
  • I speak as to intelligent [persons]: do *ye* judge what I say.
  • I speak as to wise men; judge for yourselves what I say.
  • The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not [the] communion of the blood of the Christ? The bread which we break, is it not [the] communion of the body of the Christ?
  • The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the [e]communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
  • Because we, [being] many, are one loaf, one body; for we all partake of that one loaf.
  • For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread.
  • See Israel according to flesh: are not they who eat the sacrifices in communion with the altar?
  • Observe Israel after the flesh: Are not those who eat of the sacrifices [f]partakers of the altar?
  • What then do I say? that what is sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?
  • What am I saying then? That an idol is anything, or what is offered to idols is anything?
  • But that what [the nations] sacrifice they sacrifice to demons, and not to God. Now I do not wish you to be in communion with demons.
  • Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons.
  • Ye cannot drink [the] Lord's cup, and [the] cup of demons: ye cannot partake of [the] Lord's table, and of [the] table of demons.
  • You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons.
  • Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?
  • Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?
  • Do All to the God's Glory

    All things are lawful, but all are not profitable; all things are lawful, but all do not edify.
  • All to the Glory of God

    All things are lawful [g]for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things [h]edify.
  • Let no one seek his own [advantage], but that of the other.
  • Let no one seek his own, but each one the other’s well-being.
  • Everything sold in the shambles eat, making no inquiry for conscience sake.
  • Eat whatever is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience’ sake;
  • For the earth [is] the Lord's and its fulness.
  • for “the earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.”
  • But if any one of the unbelievers invite you, and ye are minded to go, all that is set before you eat, making no inquiry for conscience sake.
  • If any of those who do not believe invites you to dinner, and you desire to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no question for conscience’ sake.
  • But if any one say to you, This is offered to holy purposes, do not eat, for his sake that pointed it out, and conscience sake;
  • But if anyone says to you, “This was offered to idols,” do not eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for conscience’ sake; [i]for “the earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.”
  • but conscience, I mean, not thine own, but that of the other: for why is my liberty judged by another conscience?
  • “Conscience,” I say, not your own, but that of the other. For why is my liberty judged by another man’s conscience?
  • If *I* partake with thanksgiving, why am I spoken evil of for what *I* give thanks for?
  • But if I partake with thanks, why am I evil spoken of for the food over which I give thanks?
  • Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatever ye do, do all things to God's glory.
  • Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
  • Give no occasion to stumbling, whether to Jews, or Greeks, or the assembly of God.
  • Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God,
  • Even as *I* also please all in all things; not seeking my own profit, but that of the many, that they may be saved.
  • just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.
