New Living Translation

  • Spiritual Gifts Bestowed

    But concerning spiritual [manifestations], brethren, I do not wish you to be ignorant.
  • Spiritual Gifts

    Now, dear brothers and sisters,a regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this.
  • Ye know that when ye were [of the] nations [ye were] led away to dumb idols, in whatever way ye might be led.
  • You know that when you were still pagans, you were led astray and swept along in worshiping speechless idols.
  • I give you therefore to know, that no one, speaking in [the power of the] Spirit of God, says, Curse [on] Jesus; and no one can say, Lord Jesus, unless in [the power of the] Holy Spirit.
  • So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.
  • But there are distinctions of gifts, but the same Spirit;
  • There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all.
  • and there are distinctions of services, and the same Lord;
  • There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord.
  • and there are distinctions of operations, but the same God who operates all things in all.
  • God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.
  • But to each the manifestation of the Spirit is given for profit.
  • A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.
  • For to one, by the Spirit, is given [the] word of wisdom; and to another [the] word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit;
  • To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise adviceb; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge.c
  • and to a different one faith, in [the power of] the same Spirit; and to another gifts of healing in [the power of] the same Spirit;
  • The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing.
  • and to another operations of miracles; and to another prophecy; and to another discerning of spirits; and to a different one kinds of tongues; and to another interpretation of tongues.
  • He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages,d while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said.
  • But all these things operates the one and the same Spirit, dividing to each in particular according as he pleases.
  • It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.
  • Many Members, One Body

    For even as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of the body, being many, are one body, so also [is] the Christ.

  • One Body with Many Parts

    The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ.
  • For also in [the power of] one Spirit *we* have all been baptised into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bondmen or free, and have all been given to drink of one Spirit.
  • Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles,e some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.f
  • For also the body is not one member but many.
  • Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part.
  • If the foot say, Because I am not a hand I am not of the body, is it on account of this not indeed of the body?
  • If the foot says, “I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand,” that does not make it any less a part of the body.
  • And if the ear say, Because I am not an eye I am not of the body, is it on account of this not indeed of the body?
  • And if the ear says, “I am not part of the body because I am not an eye,” would that make it any less a part of the body?
  • If the whole body [were] an eye, where the hearing? if all hearing, where the smelling?
  • If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything?
  • But now God has set the members, each one of them in the body, according as it has pleased [him].
  • But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it.
  • But if all were one member, where the body?
  • How strange a body would be if it had only one part!
  • But now the members [are] many, and the body one.
  • Yes, there are many parts, but only one body.
  • The eye cannot say to the hand, I have not need of thee; or again, the head to the feet, I have not need of you.
  • The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.”
  • But much rather, the members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary;
  • In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary.
  • and those [parts] of the body which we esteem to be the more void of honour, these we clothe with more abundant honour; and our uncomely [parts] have more abundant comeliness;
  • And the parts we regard as less honorable are those we clothe with the greatest care. So we carefully protect those parts that should not be seen,
  • but our comely [parts] have not need. But God has tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to [the part] that lacked;
  • while the more honorable parts do not require this special care. So God has put the body together such that extra honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity.
  • that there might be no division in the body, but that the members might have the same concern one for another.
  • This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other.
  • And if one member suffer, all the members suffer with [it]; and if one member be glorified, all the members rejoice with [it].
  • If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad.
  • Now *ye* are Christ's body, and members in particular.
  • All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.
  • Spiritual Gifts

    And God has set certain in the assembly: first, apostles; secondly, prophets; thirdly, teachers; then miraculous powers; then gifts of healings; helps; governments; kinds of tongues.
  • Here are some of the parts God has appointed for the church:
    first are apostles,
    second are prophets,
    third are teachers,
    then those who do miracles,
    those who have the gift of healing,
    those who can help others,
    those who have the gift of leadership,
    those who speak in unknown languages.
  • [Are] all apostles? [are] all prophets? [are] all teachers? [are] all [in possession of] miraculous powers?
  • Are we all apostles? Are we all prophets? Are we all teachers? Do we all have the power to do miracles?
  • have all gifts of healings? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
  • Do we all have the gift of healing? Do we all have the ability to speak in unknown languages? Do we all have the ability to interpret unknown languages? Of course not!
  • But desire earnestly the greater gifts, and yet shew I unto you a way of more surpassing excellence.
  • So you should earnestly desire the most helpful gifts.
    But now let me show you a way of life that is best of all.
