Darby Bible Translation

English Standard Version

  • Ministers of a New Covenant

Do we begin again to commend ourselves? or do we need, as some, commendatory letters to you, or [commendatory] from you?
  • Ministers of the New Covenant

Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, as some do, letters of recommendation to you, or from you?
  • *Ye* are our letter, written in our hearts, known and read of all men,
  • You yourselves are our letter of recommendation, written on oura hearts, to be known and read by all.
  • being manifested to be Christ's epistle ministered by us, written, not with ink, but [the] Spirit of [the] living God; not on stone tables, but on fleshy tables of [the] heart.
  • And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.b
  • And such confidence have we through the Christ towards God:
  • Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God.
  • not that we are competent of ourselves to think anything as of ourselves, but our competency [is] of God;
  • Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God,
  • who has also made us competent, [as] ministers of [the] new covenant; not of letter, but of spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit quickens.
  • who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
  • The Glory of the New Covenant

    (But if the ministry of death, in letters, graven in stones, began with glory, so that the children of Israel could not fix their eyes on the face of Moses, on account of the glory of his face, [a glory] which is annulled;
  • Now if the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such glory that the Israelites could not gaze at Moses’ face because of its glory, which was being brought to an end,
  • how shall not rather the ministry of the Spirit subsist in glory?
  • will not the ministry of the Spirit have even more glory?
  • For if the ministry of condemnation [be] glory, much rather the ministry of righteousness abounds in glory.
  • For if there was glory in the ministry of condemnation, the ministry of righteousness must far exceed it in glory.
  • For also that [which was] glorified is not glorified in this respect, on account of the surpassing glory.
  • Indeed, in this case, what once had glory has come to have no glory at all, because of the glory that surpasses it.
  • For if that annulled [was introduced] with glory, much rather that which abides [subsists] in glory.
  • For if what was being brought to an end came with glory, much more will what is permanent have glory.
  • Having therefore such hope, we use much boldness:
  • Since we have such a hope, we are very bold,
  • and not according as Moses put a veil on his own face, so that the children of Israel should not fix their eyes on the end of that annulled.
  • not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end.
  • But their thoughts have been darkened, for unto this day the same veil remains in reading the old covenant, unremoved, which in Christ is annulled.
  • But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away.
  • But unto this day, when Moses is read, the veil lies upon their heart.
  • Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts.
  • But when it shall turn to [the] Lord, the veil is taken away.)
  • But when onec turns to the Lord, the veil is removed.
  • Now the Lord is the Spirit, but where the Spirit of [the] Lord [is, there is] liberty.
  • Now the Lordd is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
  • But *we* all, looking on the glory of the Lord, with unveiled face, are transformed according to the same image from glory to glory, even as by [the] Lord [the] Spirit.
  • And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord,e are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.f For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
