New Living Translation

  • Timothy's Visit

    Wherefore, being no longer able to refrain ourselves, we thought good to be left alone in Athens,
  • Finally, when we could stand it no longer, we decided to stay alone in Athens,
  • and sent Timotheus, our brother and fellow-workman under God in the glad tidings of Christ, to confirm you and encourage [you] concerning your faith,
  • and we sent Timothy to visit you. He is our brother and God’s co-workera in proclaiming the Good News of Christ. We sent him to strengthen you, to encourage you in your faith,
  • that no one might be moved by these afflictions. (For yourselves know that we are set for this;
  • and to keep you from being shaken by the troubles you were going through. But you know that we are destined for such troubles.
  • for also, when we were with you, we told you beforehand we are about to be in tribulation, even as also it came to pass, and ye know.)
  • Even while we were with you, we warned you that troubles would soon come — and they did, as you well know.
  • For this reason *I* also, no longer able to refrain myself, sent to know your faith, lest perhaps the tempter had tempted you and our labour should be come to nothing.
  • That is why, when I could bear it no longer, I sent Timothy to find out whether your faith was still strong. I was afraid that the tempter had gotten the best of you and that our work had been useless.
  • Timothy's Encouraging Report

    But Timotheus having just come to us from you, and brought to us the glad tidings of your faith and love, and that ye have always good remembrance of us, desiring much to see us, even as we also you;
  • But now Timothy has just returned, bringing us good news about your faith and love. He reports that you always remember our visit with joy and that you want to see us as much as we want to see you.
  • for this reason we have been comforted in you, brethren, in all our distress and tribulation, through your faith,
  • So we have been greatly encouraged in the midst of our troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters,b because you have remained strong in your faith.
  • because now we live if *ye* stand firm in [the] Lord.
  • It gives us new life to know that you are standing firm in the Lord.
  • For what thanksgiving can we render to God for you, for all the joy wherewith we rejoice on account of you before our God,
  • How we thank God for you! Because of you we have great joy as we enter God’s presence.
  • night and day beseeching exceedingly to the end that we may see your face, and perfect what is lacking in your faith?
  • Night and day we pray earnestly for you, asking God to let us see you again to fill the gaps in your faith.
  • But our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you.
  • May God our Father and our Lord Jesus bring us to you very soon.
  • But you, may the Lord make to exceed and abound in love toward one another, and toward all, even as we also towards you,
  • And may the Lord make your love for one another and for all people grow and overflow, just as our love for you overflows.
  • in order to the confirming of your hearts unblamable in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.
  • May he, as a result, make your hearts strong, blameless, and holy as you stand before God our Father when our Lord Jesus comes again with all his holy people. Amen.
