New Living Translation

  • Lands Yet Unconquered

    And Joshua was old, advanced in age, and Jehovah said to him, Thou art old, advanced in age, and there remaineth yet very much land to take possession of.
  • The Land Yet to Be Conquered

    When Joshua was an old man, the LORD said to him, “You are growing old, and much land remains to be conquered.
  • This is the land that yet remaineth: all the districts of the Philistines and all the Geshurites,
  • This is the territory that remains: all the regions of the Philistines and the Geshurites,
  • from the Shihor, which [floweth] before Egypt, as far as the borders of Ekron northward, [and which] is counted to the Canaanite; five lordships of the Philistines: of Gazah, and of Ashdod, of Eshkalon, of Gath, and of Ekron; also the Avvites;
  • and the larger territory of the Canaanites, extending from the stream of Shihor on the border of Egypt, northward to the boundary of Ekron. It includes the territory of the five Philistine rulers of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron. The land of the Avvites
  • in the south, the whole land of the Canaanites, and Mearah which [belongeth] to the Sidonians, unto Aphek, to the border of the Amorites;
  • in the south also remains to be conquered. In the north, the following area has not yet been conquered: all the land of the Canaanites, including Mearah (which belongs to the Sidonians), stretching northward to Aphek on the border of the Amorites;
  • and the land of the Giblites, and all Lebanon, toward the sun-rising, from Baal-Gad at the foot of mount Hermon to the entrance into Hamath;
  • the land of the Gebalites and all of the Lebanon mountain area to the east, from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo-hamath;
  • all the inhabitants of the hill-country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim, all the Sidonians; I will dispossess them from before the children of Israel. Only, partition it by lot to Israel for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee.
  • and all the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim, including all the land of the Sidonians.
    “I myself will drive these people out of the land ahead of the Israelites. So be sure to give this land to Israel as a special possession, just as I have commanded you.
  • And now divide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes, and to half the tribe of Manasseh;
  • Include all this territory as Israel’s possession when you divide this land among the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.”
  • Inheritance East of Jordan

    with him the Reubenites and the Gadites have received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of Jehovah gave them:

  • The Land Divided East of the Jordan

    Half the tribe of Manasseh and the tribes of Reuben and Gad had already received their grants of land on the east side of the Jordan, for Moses, the servant of the LORD, had previously assigned this land to them.
  • from Aroer, which is on the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the ravine, and all the plateau of Medeba to Dibon,
  • Their territory extended from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Gorge (including the town in the middle of the gorge) to the plain beyond Medeba, as far as Dibon.
  • and all the cities of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who reigned at Heshbon, to the border of the children of Ammon;
  • It also included all the towns of King Sihon of the Amorites, who had reigned in Heshbon, and extended as far as the borders of Ammon.
  • and Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maachathites, and all mount Hermon, and the whole of Bashan to Salcah;
  • It included Gilead, the territory of the kingdoms of Geshur and Maacah, all of Mount Hermon, all of Bashan as far as Salecah,
  • all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned at Ashtaroth and at Edrei, who remained of the residue of the giants; and Moses smote them and dispossessed them.
  • and all the territory of King Og of Bashan, who had reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei. King Og was the last of the Rephaites, for Moses had attacked them and driven them out.
  • But the children of Israel did not dispossess the Geshurites nor the Maachathites; but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites to this day.
  • But the Israelites failed to drive out the people of Geshur and Maacah, so they continue to live among the Israelites to this day.
  • Only to the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance: the offerings by fire of Jehovah the God of Israel are their inheritance, as he said to them.

  • An Allotment for the Tribe of Levi

    Moses did not assign any allotment of land to the tribe of Levi. Instead, as the LORD had promised them, their allotment came from the offerings burned on the altar to the LORD, the God of Israel.
  • And Moses gave [a portion] to the tribe of the children of Reuben according to their families.

  • The Land Given to the Tribe of Reuben

    Moses had assigned the following area to the clans of the tribe of Reuben.
  • And their territory was from Aroer, which is on the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the ravine, and all the plateau by Medeba;
  • Their territory extended from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Gorge (including the town in the middle of the gorge) to the plain beyond Medeba.
  • Heshbon, and all her cities that are in the plateau, Dibon, and Bamoth-Baal, and Beth-Baal-meon,
  • It included Heshbon and the other towns on the plain — Dibon, Bamoth-baal, Beth-baal-meon,
  • And Jahzah, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath,
  • Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,
  • and Kirjathaim, and Sibmah, and Zereth-shahar in the mountain of the vale,
  • Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth-shahar on the hill above the valley,
  • and Beth-Peor, and the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth;
  • Beth-peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth.
  • all the cities of the plateau, and the whole kingdom of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who reigned at Heshbon, whom Moses smote, him and the princes of Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the chiefs of Sihon dwelling in the land.
  • The land of Reuben also included all the towns of the plain and the entire kingdom of Sihon. Sihon was the Amorite king who had reigned in Heshbon and was killed by Moses along with the leaders of Midian — Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba — princes living in the region who were allied with Sihon.
  • Balaam Slain

    And Balaam the son of Beor, the diviner, did the children of Israel kill with the sword among them that were slain by them.
  • The Israelites had also killed Balaam son of Beor, who used magic to tell the future.
  • And the border of the children of Reuben was the Jordan, and [its] border. This is the inheritance of the children of Reuben according to their families, the cities and their hamlets.
  • The Jordan River marked the western boundary for the tribe of Reuben. The towns and their surrounding villages in this area were given as a homeland to the clans of the tribe of Reuben.
  • And Moses gave [a portion] to the tribe of Gad, to the children of Gad according to their families.

  • The Land Given to the Tribe of Gad

    Moses had assigned the following area to the clans of the tribe of Gad.
  • And their territory was Jaazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the children of Ammon, to Aroer which is before Rabbah;
  • Their territory included Jazer, all the towns of Gilead, and half of the land of Ammon, as far as the town of Aroer just west ofa Rabbah.
  • and from Heshbon to Ramath-Mizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir;
  • It extended from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the territory of Lo-debar.b
  • and in the valley, Beth-haram, and Beth-Nimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon the king of Heshbon, the Jordan and [its] border, as far as the edge of the sea of Chinnereth beyond the Jordan eastward.
  • In the valley were Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, Zaphon, and the rest of the kingdom of King Sihon of Heshbon. The western boundary ran along the Jordan River, extended as far north as the tip of the Sea of Galilee,c and then turned eastward.
  • This is the inheritance of the children of Gad according to their families, the cities and their hamlets.
  • The towns and their surrounding villages in this area were given as a homeland to the clans of the tribe of Gad.
  • And Moses gave [a portion] to half the tribe of Manasseh; and for half the tribe of the children of Manasseh according to their families:

  • The Land Given to the Half-Tribe of Manasseh

    Moses had assigned the following area to the clans of the half-tribe of Manasseh.
  • their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, the whole kingdom of Og the king of Bashan, and all the villages of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities.
  • Their territory extended from Mahanaim, including all of Bashan, all the former kingdom of King Og, and the sixty towns of Jair in Bashan.
  • And half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, [belonged] to the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, to the one half of the children of Machir according to their families.
  • It also included half of Gilead and King Og’s royal cities of Ashtaroth and Edrei. All this was given to the clans of the descendants of Makir, who was Manasseh’s son.
  • This is that which Moses allotted for inheritance in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan of Jericho, eastward.
  • These are the allotments Moses had made while he was on the plains of Moab, across the Jordan River, east of Jericho.
  • But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance: Jehovah the God of Israel is their inheritance, as he said to them.
  • But Moses gave no allotment of land to the tribe of Levi, for the LORD, the God of Israel, had promised that he himself would be their allotment.
