And it came to pass when all the kings who were on this side the Jordan, in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and along all the coast of the great sea as far as opposite to Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard [of it],

Услышав сие, все цари, которые за Иорданом, на горе и на равнине и по всему берегу великого моря, близ Ливана, Хеттеи, Аморреи, Хананеи, Ферезеи, Евеи и Иевусеи,
that they assembled together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.
собрались вместе, дабы единодушно сразиться с Иисусом и Израилем.
And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,
Но жители Гаваона, услышав, что Иисус сделал с Иерихоном и Гаем,
then they also acted with craft, and they went prepared as on a journey, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine-flasks, old and rent and tied up;
употребили хитрость: пошли, запаслись хлебом на дорогу и положили ветхие мешки на ослов своих и ветхие, изорванные и заплатанные мехи вина;
and old and patched sandals upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry [and] mouldy.
и обувь на ногах их была ветхая с заплатами, и одежда на них ветхая; и весь дорожный хлеб их был сухой и заплесневелый.
And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said to him, and to the men of Israel, From a far country are we come; and now make a covenant with us.
Они пришли к Иисусу в стан Израильский в Галгал и сказали ему и всем Израильтянам: из весьма дальней земли пришли мы; итак, заключите с нами союз.
And the men of Israel said to the Hivite, Perhaps thou dwellest in the midst of us, and how should I make a covenant with thee?
Израильтяне же сказали Евеям: может быть, вы живёте близ нас? как нам заключить с вами союз?
And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said to them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?
Они сказали Иисусу: мы рабы твои. Иисус же сказал им: кто вы и откуда пришли?
And they said to him, From a very far country are thy servants come, because of the name of Jehovah thy God; for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,
Они сказали ему: из весьма дальней земли пришли рабы твои во имя Господа, Бога твоего; ибо мы слышали славу Его и всё, что сделал Он в Египте,
and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon the king of Heshbon, and to Og the king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.
и всё, что Он сделал двум царям Аморрейским, которые были по ту сторону Иордана, Сигону, царю Есевонскому, и Огу, царю Васанскому, который жил в Астарофе.
And our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, Take victuals in your hand for the way, and go to meet them, and say to them, We are your servants, and now make a covenant with us.
Слыша сие, старейшины наши и все жители нашей земли сказали нам: возьмите в руки ваши хлеба на дорогу и пойдите навстречу им и скажите им: «мы рабы ваши; итак, заключите с нами союз».
This our bread we took warm for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; and now, behold, it is dry, and is become mouldy.
Этот хлеб наш из домов наших мы взяли тёплый в тот день, когда пошли к вам, а теперь вот, он сделался сухой и заплесневелый;
And these flasks of wine which we filled new, behold, they are rent; and these our garments and our sandals are become old by reason of the very long journey.
и эти мехи с вином, которые мы налили новые, вот, изорвались; и эта одежда наша и обувь наша обветшала от весьма дальней дороги.
And the men took of their victuals, but they did not inquire at the mouth of Jehovah.
Израильтяне взяли их хлеба, а Господа не вопросили.
And Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live; and the princes of the assembly swore unto them.
И заключил Иисус с ними мир и постановил с ними условие в том, что он сохранит им жизнь; и поклялись им начальники общества.
And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt in their midst.
А через три дня, как заключили они с ними союз, услышали, что они соседи их и живут близ них;
And the children of Israel journeyed, and came to their cities on the third day; and their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-jearim.
ибо сыны Израилевы, отправившись в путь, пришли в города их на третий день; города же их были: Гаваон, Кефира, Беероф и Кириаф-Иарим.
And the children of Israel did not smite them, because the princes of the assembly had sworn unto them by Jehovah the God of Israel. Then all the assembly murmured against the princes.
сыны Израилевы не побили их, потому что начальники общества клялись им Господом, Богом Израилевым. За это всё общество Израилево возроптало на начальников.
And all the princes said to all the assembly, We have sworn unto them by Jehovah the God of Israel, and now we may not touch them.
Все начальники сказали всему обществу: мы клялись им Господом, Богом Израилевым, и потому не можем коснуться их;
This we will do to them, and let them live, lest wrath come upon us, because of the oath which we swore unto them.
а вот что сделаем с ними: оставим их в живых, чтобы не постиг нас гнев за клятву, которою мы клялись им.
And the princes said to them, Let them live. And they were hewers of wood and drawers of water for all the assembly; as the princes had said to them.
И сказали им начальники: пусть они живут, но будут рубить дрова и черпать воду для всего общества. И сделало всё общество так, как сказали им начальники.
And Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, Why have ye deceived us, saying, We are very far from you; whereas ye dwell in our midst?
Иисус призвал их и сказал: для чего вы обманули нас, сказав: «мы весьма далеко от вас», тогда как вы живёте близ нас?
And now ye are cursed, and ye shall never cease to be bondmen, and hewers of wood, and drawers of water for the house of my God.
за это прокляты вы! без конца вы будете рабами, будете рубить дрова и черпать воду для дома Бога моего!
And they answered Joshua and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants how that Jehovah thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; and we feared greatly for our lives because of you, and did this thing.
Они в ответ Иисусу сказали: дошло до сведения рабов твоих, что Господь, Бог твой, повелел Моисею, рабу Своему, дать вам всю землю и погубить всех жителей сей земли пред лицом вашим; посему мы весьма боялись, чтобы вы не лишили нас жизни, и сделали это дело;
And now behold, we are in thy hand: as it is good and right in thine eyes to do to us, do.
теперь вот мы в руке твоей: как лучше и справедливее тебе покажется поступить с нами, так и поступи.
And he did so to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, and they did not slay them.
И поступил с ними так: избавил их от руки сынов Израилевых, и они не умертвили их;
And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the assembly, and for the altar of Jehovah, to this day, in the place which he should choose.
и определил в тот день Иисус, чтобы они рубили дрова и черпали воду для общества и для жертвенника Господня; даже до сего дня, на месте, какое ни избрал бы Господь.
