The Deceit of the Gibeonites
And it came to pass when all the kings who were on this side the Jordan, in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and along all the coast of the great sea as far as opposite to Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard [of it],

І сталося, коли це почули всі царі, що по той бік Йорда́ну, на горі та на поді́ллі, та на всім бе́резі Великого моря навпроти Лива́ну: хітте́янин, і аморе́янин, ханаане́янин, періззе́янин, хівве́янин і євусе́янин,
that they assembled together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.
то вони зібралися ра́зом, щоб однодушно воювати проти Ісуса та проти Ізраїля.
And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,
А ме́шканці Ґів'ону почули, що́ Ісус зробив Єрихо́нові та Аєві,
then they also acted with craft, and they went prepared as on a journey, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine-flasks, old and rent and tied up;
то зробили й вони хитрість. І пішли вони, і забезпе́чились живністю на дорогу, — і взяли́ повити́рані мішки для ослів своїх, і бурдюки́ для вина повити́рані, і потріскані, і пов'я́зані,
and old and patched sandals upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry [and] mouldy.
і взуття повитиране та пола́тане на їхніх ногах, і одежа на них поношена, а ввесь хліб їхньої поживи на дорогу був сухий, заплісні́лий.
And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said to him, and to the men of Israel, From a far country are we come; and now make a covenant with us.
І пішли вони до Ісуса, до табо́ру в Ґілґалі, та й сказали до нього та до мужів Ізраїлевих: „Ми прийшли з далекого кра́ю, а ви тепер складіть з нами умову“.
And the men of Israel said to the Hivite, Perhaps thou dwellest in the midst of us, and how should I make a covenant with thee?
І сказали Ізраїлеві мужі до хівве́ян: „Може ви сидите́ побли́зу нас, то я́к ми складемо з вами умову?“
And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said to them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?
І сказали вони до Ісуса: „Ми твої раби“. А Ісус сказав до них: „Хто́ ви та звідки прихо́дите?“
And they said to him, From a very far country are thy servants come, because of the name of Jehovah thy God; for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,
І вони сказали йому: „З дуже далекого кра́ю прийшли твої раби до Йме́ння Господа, Бога твого, бо ми чули чутку про Нього, і все, що́ Він зробив був в Єгипті,
and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon the king of Heshbon, and to Og the king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.
і все, що́ Він зробив двом аморейським царям, що по той бік Йорда́ну, — Сигонові, цареві хешбонському, та Оґові, цареві башанському, що в Аштароті.
And our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, Take victuals in your hand for the way, and go to meet them, and say to them, We are your servants, and now make a covenant with us.
І сказали до нас наші старші́ та всі ме́шканці нашого кра́ю, говорячи: Візьміть у свою руку поживу на дорогу, і йдіть навпроти них та й скажете їм: Ми ваші раби, а тепер складіть із нами умову.
This our bread we took warm for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; and now, behold, it is dry, and is become mouldy.
Оце наш хліб: теплим ми забезпечилися ним у поживу на дорогу з наших домів у день нашого ви́ходу, щоб іти до вас, а тепер ось він висох і став заплісні́лий.
And these flasks of wine which we filled new, behold, they are rent; and these our garments and our sandals are become old by reason of the very long journey.
А ці бурдюки́ вина, що понапо́внювали ми нові, ось поде́рлися! А ось одежа наша та взуття́ наше повитира́лося від цієї дуже далекої дороги“.
And the men took of their victuals, but they did not inquire at the mouth of Jehovah.
І взяли́ люди з їхньої поживи на дорогу, а Господніх уст не питали.
And Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live; and the princes of the assembly swore unto them.
І вчинив їм Ісус мир, і склав з ними умову, щоб зоставити їх при житті, і присягнули їм начальники громади.
And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt in their midst.
І сталося по трьох днях по тому, як склали з ними умову, то почули, що близькі́ вони до нього, і сидять вони поміж ними.
And the children of Israel journeyed, and came to their cities on the third day; and their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-jearim.
І рушили Ізраїлеві сини, і третього дня прибули́ до їхніх міст. А їхні міста: Ґів'он, і Кефіра, і Беерот, і Кір'ят-Єарім.
And the children of Israel did not smite them, because the princes of the assembly had sworn unto them by Jehovah the God of Israel. Then all the assembly murmured against the princes.
І не повбивали їх Ізраїлеві сини, бо начальники громади присягли́ були їм Господом, Богом Ізраїля. І нарікала вся громада на начальників.
And all the princes said to all the assembly, We have sworn unto them by Jehovah the God of Israel, and now we may not touch them.
І сказали всі начальники до всієї громади: „Ми присягнули їм Господом, Богом Ізраїля, а тепер ми не можемо доторкнутися до них.
This we will do to them, and let them live, lest wrath come upon us, because of the oath which we swore unto them.
Оце зробімо їм, — позоставимо їх при житті, і не буде на нас гніву за прися́гу, що ми присягнули їм“.
And the princes said to them, Let them live. And they were hewers of wood and drawers of water for all the assembly; as the princes had said to them.
І сказали до них начальники: „Нехай вони живуть“. І стали вони рубати дро́ва та носи́ти воду для всієї громади, як говорили їм начальники.
And Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, Why have ye deceived us, saying, We are very far from you; whereas ye dwell in our midst?
І покликав їх Ісус, і промовляв до них, говорячи: „Чому́ ви обмани́ли нас, говорячи: Ми дуже далекі від вас, а ви ось сидите́ серед нас?
And now ye are cursed, and ye shall never cease to be bondmen, and hewers of wood, and drawers of water for the house of my God.
А тепер ви прокля́ті, і не переведеться з-посеред вас раб, і рубачі́ дров, і носії́ води для дому Бога мого“.
And they answered Joshua and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants how that Jehovah thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; and we feared greatly for our lives because of you, and did this thing.
А вони відповіли Ісусові та й сказали: „Бо справді ви́явлено рабам твоїм, що Господь, Бог твій, наказав Мойсеєві, Своєму рабові, дати вам увесь цей край, і ви́губити всіх ме́шканців цієї землі перед вами. І ми дуже налякалися за своє життя зо страху перед вами, і зробили оцю річ.
And now behold, we are in thy hand: as it is good and right in thine eyes to do to us, do.
А тепер ми оце в руці твоїй: я́к добре, і я́к справедливо в оча́х твоїх учинити нам, учини“.
And he did so to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, and they did not slay them.
І він зробив їм так, — і врятував їх від руки Ізраїлевих синів, і не повбивали їх.
And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the assembly, and for the altar of Jehovah, to this day, in the place which he should choose.
І дав їх Ісус того дня за рубачі́в дров та за носії́в води для громади й для Господнього же́ртівника, і так є аж до цього дня, до місця, яке він вибере.
