Darby Bible Translation

English Standard Version

  • The Man of Sin

    Now we beg you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to him,
  • The Man of Lawlessness

    Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers,a
  • that ye be not soon shaken in mind, nor troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter, as [if it were] by us, as that the day of the Lord is present.
  • not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come.
  • Let not any one deceive you in any manner, because [it will not be] unless the apostasy have first come, and the man of sin have been revealed, the son of perdition;
  • Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessnessb is revealed, the son of destruction,c
  • who opposes and exalts himself on high against all called God, or object of veneration; so that he himself sits down in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
  • who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.
  • Do ye not remember that, being yet with you, I said these things to you?
  • Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things?
  • And now ye know that which restrains, that he should be revealed in his own time.
  • And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time.
  • For the mystery of lawlessness already works; only [there is] he who restrains now until he be gone,
  • For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way.
  • and then the lawless one shall be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus shall consume with the breath of his mouth, and shall annul by the appearing of his coming;
  • And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming.
  • whose coming is according to the working of Satan in all power and signs and wonders of falsehood,
  • The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders,
  • and in all deceit of unrighteousness to them that perish, because they have not received the love of the truth that they might be saved.
  • and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
  • And for this reason God sends to them a working of error, that they should believe what is false,
  • Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false,
  • that all might be judged who have not believed the truth, but have found pleasure in unrighteousness.
  • in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
  • Stand Firm

    But we ought to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved of [the] Lord, that God has chosen you from [the] beginning to salvation in sanctification of [the] Spirit and belief of [the] truth:
  • Stand Firm

    But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruitsd to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.
  • whereto he has called you by our glad tidings, to [the] obtaining of [the] glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • So then, brethren, stand firm, and hold fast the instructions which ye have been taught, whether by word or by our letter.
  • So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter.
  • But our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us, and given [us] eternal consolation and good hope by grace,
  • Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace,
  • encourage your hearts, and establish you in every good work and word.
  • comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.
