Instructions to Servants

Let as many bondmen as are under yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and the teaching be not blasphemed.

1

Усі раби, які під ярмом, нехай уважають панів своїх гідними всякої чести, щоб не зневажа́лися Боже Ім'я́ та наука.

2

And they that have believing masters, let them not despise [them] because they are brethren; but let them the rather serve them with subjection, because they are faithful and beloved, who profit by the good and ready service [rendered]. These things teach and exhort.

А ті, хто має панів віруючих, не повинні недбати про них через те, що бра́ття вони, але нехай служать їм тим більше, що вони віруючі та улю́блені, що вони добродійства Божі приймають. Оцього навчай та нагадуй!

Reject False Doctrines

If any one teach differently, and do not accede to sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the teaching which [is] according to piety,

А коли хто навчає інакше, і не приступає до здорових слів Господа нашого Ісуса Христа та до науки, що вона за правдивою вірою, —

4

he is puffed up, knowing nothing, but sick about questions and disputes of words, out of which arise envy, strife, injurious words, evil suspicions,

той згорді́в, нічого не знає, але захво́рів на суперечки й змага́ння, що від них повстають заздрість, сварки́, богозневаги, лукаві здогади,

5

constant quarrellings of men corrupted in mind and destitute of the truth, holding gain to be [the end of] piety.

постійні сварні між людьми́ зіпсутого розуму й позбавлених правди, які ду́мають, ніби благоче́стя — то зиск. Цурайся таких!

Contentment in Godliness

But piety with contentment *is* great gain.

Великий же зиск — то благоче́стя із задоволенням.

For we have brought nothing into the world: [it is] [manifest] that neither can we carry anything out.

Бо ми не прине́сли в світ нічого, то нічого не можемо й ви́нести.

8

But having sustenance and covering, we will be content with these.

8

А як маєм поживу та одяг, то ми задово́лені бу́дьмо з того.

9

But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and many unwise and hurtful lusts, which plunge men into destruction and ruin.

А ті, хто хоче багаті́ти, упадають у спокуси та в сітку, та в числе́нні нерозумні й шкідливі пожадливості, що втручають людей на загла́ду й загибіль.

For the love of money is [the] root of every evil; which some having aspired after, have wandered from the faith, and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

Бо корень усього лихого — то грошолюбство, якому віддавшись, дехто відбились від віри й поклали на себе великі стражда́ння.

11

Fight the Good Fight

But *thou*, O man of God, flee these things, and pursue righteousness, piety, faith, love, endurance, meekness of spirit.

Але ти, о Божа люди́но, утікай від такого, а женися за праведністю, благоче́стям, вірою, любов'ю, терпеливістю, ла́гідністю!

12

Strive earnestly [in] the good conflict of faith. Lay hold of eternal life, to which thou hast been called, and hast confessed the good confession before many witnesses.

Змагай добрим зма́гом віри, ухопися за вічне життя, до якого й покликаний ти, і визнав був добре визна́ння перед свідками багатьма́.

13

I enjoin thee before God who preserves all things in life, and Christ Jesus who witnessed before Pontius Pilate the good confession,

Наказую перед Богом, що ожи́влює все, і перед Христом Ісусом, Який добре визна́ння засві́дчив за По́нтія Пила́та,

14

that thou keep the commandment spotless, irreproachable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ;

14

щоб доде́ржав ти заповідь чистою та бездога́нною аж до з'я́влення Господа нашого Ісуса Христа,

15

which in its own time the blessed and only Ruler shall shew, the King of those that reign, and Lord of those that exercise lordship;

15

що його свого ча́су покаже блаженний і єдиний міцний, Цар над царями та Пан над панами,

16

who only has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light; whom no man has seen, nor is able to see; to whom [be] honour and eternal might. Amen.

Єдиний, що має безсмертя, і живе в неприступному світлі, Якого не бачив ніхто із людей, ані бачити не може. Честь Йому й вічна влада, амі́нь!

17

A Charge to the Rich

Enjoin on those rich in the present age not to be high-minded, nor to trust on the uncertainty of riches; but in the God who affords us all things richly for [our] enjoyment;

Наказуй багатим за віку тепе́рішнього, щоб не не́слися ви́соко, і щоб надії не клали на багатство непевне, а на Бога Живого, що щедро дає нам усе на спожи́ток,

18

to do good, to be rich in good works, to be liberal in distributing, disposed to communicate [of their substance],

18

щоб робили добро, багати́лися в добрих ділах, були щедрі та пильні,

19

laying by for themselves a good foundation for the future, that they may lay hold of [what is] really life.

19

щоб збирали собі скарб, як добру основу в майбу́тньому, щоб прийняти правдиве життя.

20

Final Guidance

O Timotheus, keep the entrusted deposit, avoiding profane, vain babblings, and oppositions of false-named knowledge,

20

О Тимофі́ю, бережи переда́ння, стережися марно́го базі́кання та супере́чок знання́, неправдиво названого так.

21

of which some having made profession, have missed the faith. Grace [be] with thee.

21

Дехто віддався йому, та й від віри відпав. Благода́ть з тобою. Амі́нь.
