Darby Bible Translation

New King James Version

  • Grace and Perseverance

    Thou therefore, my child, be strong in the grace which [is] in Christ Jesus.
  • Be Strong in Grace

    You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
  • And the things thou hast heard of me in the presence of many witnesses, these entrust to faithful men, such as shall be competent to instruct others also.
  • And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
  • Take thy share in suffering as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
  • You therefore must endure[a] hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
  • No one going as a soldier entangles himself with the affairs of life, that he may please him who has enlisted him as a soldier.
  • No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.
  • And if also any one contend [in the games], he is not crowned unless he contend lawfully.
  • And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.
  • The husbandman must labour before partaking of the fruits.
  • The hardworking farmer must be first to partake of the crops.
  • Think of what I say, for the Lord will give thee understanding in all things.
  • Consider what I say, and [b]may the Lord give you understanding in all things.
  • Remember Jesus Christ raised from among [the] dead, of [the] seed of David, according to my glad tidings,
  • Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel,
  • in which I suffer even unto bonds as an evil-doer: but the word of God is not bound.
  • for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not chained.
  • For this cause I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that *they* also may obtain the salvation which [is] in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
  • Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the [c]elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
  • The word [is] faithful; for if we have died together with [him], we shall also live together;
  • This is a faithful saying:
    For if we died with Him,
    We shall also live with Him.
  • if we endure, we shall also reign together; if we deny, *he* also will deny us;
  • If we endure,
    We shall also reign with Him.
    If we deny Him,
    He also will deny us.
  • if we are unfaithful, *he* abides faithful, for he cannot deny himself.
  • If we are faithless,
    He remains faithful;
    He cannot deny Himself.
  • The Lord's Approved Workman

    Of these things put in remembrance, testifying earnestly before the Lord not to have disputes of words, profitable for nothing, to the subversion of the hearers.
  • Approved and Disapproved Workers

    Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to [d]strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers.
  • Strive diligently to present thyself approved to God, a workman that has not to be ashamed, cutting in a straight line the word of truth.
  • Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
  • But profane, vain babblings shun, for they will advance to greater impiety,
  • But shun profane and [e]idle babblings, for they will [f]increase to more ungodliness.
  • and their word will spread as a gangrene; of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;
  • And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort,
  • [men] who as to the truth have gone astray, saying that the resurrection has taken place already; and overthrow the faith of some.
  • who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some.
  • Yet the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, [The] Lord knows those that are his; and, Let every one who names the name of [the] Lord withdraw from iniquity.
  • Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of [g]Christ depart from iniquity.”
  • But in a great house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also wooden and earthen; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.
  • But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor.
  • If therefore one shall have purified himself from these, [in separating himself from them], he shall be a vessel to honour, sanctified, serviceable to the Master, prepared for every good work.
  • Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, [h]sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.
  • But youthful lusts flee, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace, with those that call upon the Lord out of a pure heart.
  • Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
  • But foolish and senseless questionings avoid, knowing that they beget contentions.
  • But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife.
  • And a bondman of [the] Lord ought not to contend, but be gentle towards all; apt to teach; forbearing;
  • And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient,
  • in meekness setting right those who oppose, if God perhaps may sometime give them repentance to acknowledgment of [the] truth,
  • in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth,
  • and that they may awake up out of the snare of the devil, [who are] taken by him, for *his* will.
  • and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.
