Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • Pay Attention to Salvation

    For this reason we should give heed more abundantly to the things [we have] heard, lest in any way we should slip away.
  • A Warning against Drifting Away

    So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it.
  • For if the word which was spoken by angels was firm, and every transgression and disobedience received just retribution,
  • For the message God delivered through angels has always stood firm, and every violation of the law and every act of disobedience was punished.
  • how shall *we* escape if we have been negligent of so great salvation, which, having had its commencement in being spoken [of] by the Lord, has been confirmed to us by those who have heard;
  • So what makes us think we can escape if we ignore this great salvation that was first announced by the Lord Jesus himself and then delivered to us by those who heard him speak?
  • God bearing, besides, witness with [them] to [it], both by signs and wonders, and various acts of power, and distributions of [the] Holy Spirit, according to his will?
  • And God confirmed the message by giving signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit whenever he chose.
  • Jesus Made Like His Brothers

    For he has not subjected to angels the habitable world which is to come, of which we speak;

  • Jesus, the Man

    And furthermore, it is not angels who will control the future world we are talking about.
  • but one has testified somewhere, saying, What is man, that thou rememberest him, or son of man that thou visitest him?
  • For in one place the Scriptures say,
    “What are mere mortals that you should think about them,
    or a son of mana that you should care for him?
  • Thou hast made him some little inferior to the angels; thou hast crowned him with glory and honour, [and hast set him over the works of thy hands;]
  • Yet for a little while you made them a little lower than the angels
    and crowned them with glory and honor.b
  • thou hast subjected all things under his feet. For in subjecting all things to him, he has left nothing unsubject to him. But now we see not yet all things subjected to *him*,
  • You gave them authority over all things.”c
    Now when it says “all things,” it means nothing is left out. But we have not yet seen all things put under their authority.
  • but we see Jesus, who [was] made some little inferior to angels on account of the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; so that by the grace of God he should taste death for every thing.
  • What we do see is Jesus, who for a little while was given a position “a little lower than the angels”; and because he suffered death for us, he is now “crowned with glory and honor.” Yes, by God’s grace, Jesus tasted death for everyone.
  • For it became him, for whom [are] all things, and by whom [are] all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make perfect the leader of their salvation through sufferings.
  • God, for whom and through whom everything was made, chose to bring many children into glory. And it was only right that he should make Jesus, through his suffering, a perfect leader, fit to bring them into their salvation.
  • For both he that sanctifies and those sanctified [are] all of one; for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,
  • So now Jesus and the ones he makes holy have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters.d
  • saying, I will declare thy name to my brethren; in [the] midst of [the] assembly will I sing thy praises.
  • For he said to God,
    “I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters.
    I will praise you among your assembled people.”e
  • And again, I will trust in him. And again, Behold, I and the children which God has given me.
  • He also said,
    “I will put my trust in him,”
    that is, “I and the children God has given me.”f
  • Since therefore the children partake of blood and flesh, he also, in like manner, took part in the same, that through death he might annul him who has the might of death, that is, the devil;
  • Because God’s children are human beings — made of flesh and blood — the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who hadg the power of death.
  • and might set free all those who through fear of death through the whole of their life were subject to bondage.
  • Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.
  • For he does not indeed take hold of angels [by the hand], but he takes hold of the seed of Abraham.
  • We also know that the Son did not come to help angels; he came to help the descendants of Abraham.
  • Wherefore it behoved him in all things to be made like to [his] brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things relating to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people;
  • Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters,h so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people.
  • for, in that himself has suffered, being tempted, he is able to help those that are being tempted.
  • Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested.
