Darby Bible Translation

English Standard Version

  • The Fifth Trumpet

    And the fifth angel sounded [his] trumpet: and I saw a star out of the heaven fallen to the earth; and there was given to it the key of the pit of the abyss.
  • And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit.a
  • And it opened the pit of the abyss; and there went up smoke out of the pit as [the] smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke of the pit.
  • He opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft rose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft.
  • And out of the smoke came forth locusts on the earth, and power was given to them as the scorpions of the earth have power;
  • Then from the smoke came locusts on the earth, and they were given power like the power of scorpions of the earth.
  • and it was said to them, that they should not injure the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but the men who have not the seal of God on their foreheads:
  • They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any green plant or any tree, but only those people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.
  • and it was given to them that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months; and their torment [was] as [the] torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man.
  • They were allowed to torment them for five months, but not to kill them, and their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it stings someone.
  • And in those days shall men seek death, and shall in no way find it; and shall desire to die, and death flees from them.
  • And in those days people will seek death and will not find it. They will long to die, but death will flee from them.
  • And the likenesses of the locusts [were] like to horses prepared for war; and upon their heads as crowns like gold, and their faces as faces of men;
  • In appearance the locusts were like horses prepared for battle: on their heads were what looked like crowns of gold; their faces were like human faces,
  • and they had hair as women's hair, and their teeth were as of lions,
  • their hair like women’s hair, and their teeth like lions’ teeth;
  • and they had breastplates as breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings [was] as the sound of chariots of many horses running to war;
  • they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the noise of their wings was like the noise of many chariots with horses rushing into battle.
  • and they have tails like scorpions, and stings; and their power [was] in their tails to hurt men five months.
  • They have tails and stings like scorpions, and their power to hurt people for five months is in their tails.
  • They have a king over them, the angel of the abyss: his name in Hebrew, Abaddon, and in Greek he has [for] name Apollyon.
  • They have as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit. His name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek he is called Apollyon.b
  • The first woe has passed. Behold, there come yet two woes after these things.
  • The first woe has passed; behold, two woes are still to come.
  • The Sixth Trumpet

    And the sixth angel sounded [his] trumpet: and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which [is] before God,
  • Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar before God,
  • saying to the sixth angel that had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound at the great river Euphrates.
  • saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”
  • And the four angels were loosed, who are prepared for the hour and day and month and year, that they might slay the third part of men;
  • So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour, the day, the month, and the year, were released to kill a third of mankind.
  • and the number of the hosts of horse [was] twice ten thousand times ten thousand. I heard their number.
  • The number of mounted troops was twice ten thousand times ten thousand; I heard their number.
  • And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and those that sat upon them, having breastplates of fire and jacinth and brimstone; and the heads of the horses [were] as heads of lions, and out of their mouths goes out fire and smoke and brimstone.
  • And this is how I saw the horses in my vision and those who rode them: they wore breastplates the color of fire and of sapphirec and of sulfur, and the heads of the horses were like lions’ heads, and fire and smoke and sulfur came out of their mouths.
  • By these three plagues were the third part of men killed, by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which goes out of their mouths.
  • By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed, by the fire and smoke and sulfur coming out of their mouths.
  • For the power of the horses is in their mouth and in their tails: for their tails [are] like serpents, having heads, and with them they injure.
  • For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails, for their tails are like serpents with heads, and by means of them they wound.
  • And the rest of men who were not killed with these plagues repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and the golden and silver and brazen and stone and wooden idols, which can neither see nor hear nor walk.
  • The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk,
  • And they repented not of their murders, nor of their witchcrafts, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.
  • nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.
