David Spares Saul

And it came to pass when Saul had returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi.

І звідти вийшов Давид і перебував в безпечних місцях в Ен-Гадди.

And Saul took three thousand men, chosen out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.

Як же вернувся Саул із походу свого прити Филистіїв, з'ясовано йому: Давид обертається тепер в Енгадській пустинї.

And he came to the sheepfolds by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet; and David and his men were abiding in the recesses of the cave.

Узяв тодї Саул три тисячі з усього Ізраїля вибраних людей та й пустивсь, шукати Давида й людей його, по горах, куди дикі кози можуть ходити.

And David's men said to him, Behold the day of which Jehovah said to thee, Behold, I will give thine enemy into thy hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good to thee. And David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe secretly.

По дорозї прийшов до хлївів овечих; а була там печера, й ввійшов туди Саул справити свою природну потребу; тим часом у кінцї в печері сидїв Давид із своїми людьми.

And it came to pass afterwards that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt.

І казали Давидові люде його: Оце ж той день, що про його казав тобі Господь: Видам тобі в руки ворога твого, щоб ти чинив із ним, що тобі вподобаєсь. Давид же встав та й урізав тихцем кусень поли в верхній одежі в Саула.

And he said to his men, Jehovah forbid that I should do this thing to my master, Jehovah's anointed, to stretch forth my hand against him, for he is the anointed of Jehovah.

Опісля ж ударила Давида совість, що він урізав поли в Сауловій одежі.

And David checked his men with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. And Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on [his] way.

І сказав він людям своїм: Нехай не дозволить менї Бог вдїяти таке мойму панові, помазанникові Господньому, щоб наложити на його руку, бо він помазанник Господень.

David also arose afterwards, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king! And when Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth, and did obeisance.

І зупинив Давид своїх людей сими словами і не дав їм устати на Саула. А Саул устав і вийшов із печері на дорогу.

And David said to Saul, Why dost thou listen to words of men, saying, Behold, David seeks thy hurt?

Потім встав і Давид, покинув печеру та й промовив услїд Саулові: Пане мій, царю! Озирнеться Саул, коли ж Давид припав лицем до землї та й поклонивсь йому.

10

Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that Jehovah had given thee this day into my hand in the cave; and they bade me kill thee; but [mine eye] spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord, for he is the anointed of Jehovah.

І каже Давид Саулові: На що ти слухаєш людського наговору, що мовляють: Давид хоче лиха тобі?

11

And see, my father, yes, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand. For in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou liest in wait for my life to take it.

Ось сьогоднї бачив єси своїми очима, що Господь віддавав тебе в руки мої в печері; менї ж і радили тебе вбити, та я ощадив тебе і сказав: не зніму руки на пана мого, бо він помазанник Господень.

12

Jehovah judge between me and thee, and Jehovah avenge me of thee; but my hand shall not be upon thee.

Отче мій! споглянь, ось у мене в руцї клапоть з одежі твоєї; я урізав поли в твоїй одежі, а тебе не вбив; з сього зрозумій, що я не мислю тобі зла й зради і не провинивсь проти тебе нїчим, а ти наважився, щоб загубити мою душу.

13

As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked; but my hand shall not be upon thee.

Нехай Господь між нами двома розсудить, нехай Господь за мене на тобі помститься,

14

After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a single flea.

14

Як се й говорить стара приповідка: від безбожних виходить безбожність; моя ж рука не буде на тобі.

15

Jehovah therefore shall be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and do me justice [in delivering me] out of thy hand.

15

За ким уганяти вийшов царь Ізраїльський? Кого переслїдуєш ти? Здохлого пса, одну блоху!

16

David's Oath to Saul

And as soon as David had ended speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice and wept.

16

Нехай же Господь буде суддею та й розсудить між обома нами. Він розбере справу мою і спасе мене від руки твоєї.

17

And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I; for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil.

17

Як же скінчив Давид сю промову до Саула, сказав Саул: Чи не твій же се голос, синоньку Давиде? Та й заплакав Саул у голос,

18

And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me, forasmuch as when Jehovah had delivered me up into thy hand, thou didst not kill me.

18

І сказав Давидові: Ти справедливший за мене, ти бо показав менї добро, тодї як я заподїяв тобі зло;

19

For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore Jehovah reward thee good for that thou hast done to me this day.

19

Ти доказав те сьогоднї, поступивши зо мною милостиво: не вбив мене, дарма що Господь видав мене тобі в руки.

20

And now behold, I know that thou shalt certainly be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thy hand.

20

Хто ж бо, найшовши ворога свого, пустить його на добру дорогу?

21

Swear now therefore to me by Jehovah, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's house.

21

Оце ж я знаю, що ти будеш царем і що в твоїй руцї остоїться царюваннє над Ізраїлем.

22

And David swore to Saul. And Saul went home; and David and his men went up to the stronghold.

22

Поклянися ж менї Господом, що не викорениш потомства мого після мене і не вигубиш мого ймення в роду мойму.
