David Again Spares Saul

And the Ziphites came to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Does not David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, facing the waste?

І з пустелі приходять до Саула на гору зіфейці й кажуть: Ось Давид переховується посеред нас на горі Ехела, що напроти Єссемуна.

And Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.

І Саул піднявся, і пішов у пустелю Зіф, а з ним — три тисячі вибраних мужів з Ізраїля, щоб шукати Давида в пустелі Зіф.

And Saul encamped in the hill of Hachilah, which faces the waste, by the way side. And David abode in the wilderness; and when he saw that Saul had come after him into the wilderness,

І вийшов Саул на гору Ехела, напроти Єссемуна біля дороги, а Давид перебував у пустелі. І побачив Давид, що Саул прийшов за ним у пустелю,

David sent out spies, and learned that Saul was certainly come.

і Давид послав розвідників, і взнав, що Саул підходить підготовлений з Кеїли.

And David arose and came to the place where Saul had encamped; and David beheld the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his host; and Saul lay within the wagon-defence, and the people were encamped round about him.

І встав Давид потай, і приходить до місця, де спав Саул, там же — Авенир, син Нира, його полководець. Спав Саул у колісниці, а народ розмістився довкола нього.

And David spake and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And Abishai said, I will go down with thee.

І відповів Давид, і запитав Ахімелеха, хета, і Авессу, сина Саруї, брата Йоава, кажучи: Хто піде зі мною до Саула в табір? І сказав Авесса: Я ввійду з тобою.

And David and Abishai came to the people by night, and behold, Saul lay sleeping within the wagon-defence, and his spear stuck in the ground at his head; and Abner and the people lay round about him.

І входить Давид і Авесса до народу вночі, аж ось Саул міцно спить у колісниці, а спис устромлений у землю біля його голови. Авенир же та його народ сплять довкола нього.

And Abishai said to David, God has delivered thine enemy into thy hand this day; and now let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear, even to the ground once, and I will not do it the second time.

І сказав Авесса до Давида: Замкнув Господь сьогодні твого ворога у твої руки, тож тепер проб’ю його раз списом до землі — і не повторю йому!

9

And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not; for who can stretch forth his hand against Jehovah's anointed, and be guiltless?

9

Та Давид сказав Авессі: Не впокориш його! Бо хто підніме свою руку на Господнього помазаника і залишиться непокараним?

10

And David said, [As] Jehovah liveth, Jehovah will surely smite him; either his day shall come to die, or he shall descend into battle and perish.

10

І сказав Давид: Нехай живе Господь, якщо Господь не уразить його або не прийде його день, і він помре, або не піде на війну і додасться до свого роду.

11

Jehovah forbid that I should stretch forth my hand against Jehovah's anointed! But now take, I pray thee, the spear that is at his head, and the cruse of water, and let us go.

Зовсім не мені перед Господом піднести мою руку на Господнього помазаника! Тож тепер візьми спис з-перед його голови та посуд для води, і підемо до себе.

12

And David took the spear and the cruse of water from Saul's head; and they went away, and no man saw [it], and none knew [it], and none awaked, for they were all asleep; for a deep sleep from Jehovah had fallen upon them.

І Давид взяв спис і посуд для води з-перед його обличчя, і вони пішли до себе. І не було того, хто дізнався, і не було того, хто бачив, і не було того, хто пробудився, — усі спали, бо на них напав Господній сон.

David Reproves Abner

And David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of a hill afar off; a great space [being] between them.

А Давид перейшов на другий бік і став здалека на вершині гори, тож між ними була велика дорога.

14

And David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, Answerest thou not, Abner? Then Abner answered and said, Who art thou that criest to the king?

14

І закликав Давид до народу, і промовив до Авенира, гукаючи: Чи не відгукнешся, Авенире? І відповів Авенир, і сказав: Хто ти, що мене кличеш?

15

And David said to Abner, Art not thou a man? and who is like to thee in Israel? and why hast thou not guarded thy lord the king? for one of the people came in to destroy the king thy lord.

І промовив Давид до Авенира: Хіба ти не муж, і хто такий, як ти в Ізраїлі? Тож навіщо не стережеш твого володаря-царя? Бо ввійшов один з народу, щоб убити твого володаря-царя.

16

This thing is not good which thou hast done. As Jehovah liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not guarded your master, Jehovah's anointed. And now see where the king's spear is, and the cruse of water that was at his head.

І не добра ця справа, яку ти вчинив! Нехай живе Господь, бо сини смерті, ви, що стережете вашого володаря-царя, Господнього помазаника! А тепер гляди! Де є спис царя і посуд для води, що біля його голови?

17

And Saul knew David's voice, and said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And David said, It is my voice, my lord, O king.

17

І Саул упізнав голос Давида, і сказав: Чи це твій голос, сину Давиде? І сказав Давид: Твій раб, володарю-царю!

18

And he said, Why does my lord thus pursue after his servant? for what have I done? or what evil is in my hand?

18

І далі сказав: Навіщо це мій володар женеться за своїм рабом? Бо в чому я згрішив і яка несправедливість у мені знайшлася?

19

And now, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If Jehovah have moved thee against me, let him accept an oblation; but if the sons of men, cursed be they before Jehovah; for they have driven me out this day from adhering to the inheritance of Jehovah, saying, Go, serve other gods.

А тепер нехай послухає мій володаря-цар слово свого раба. Якщо Бог тебе наводить на мене, хай запашними будуть твої жертви, а якщо людські сини, то вони прокляті перед Господом, бо сьогодні вони мене викинули, щоб я не закріпився в Господньому спадку, кажучи: Піди й служи іншим богам!

20

And now, let not my blood fall to the earth far from the face of Jehovah; for the king of Israel is come out to seek a single flea, as when they hunt a partridge on the mountains.

20

І тепер нехай кров моя не впаде на землю перед Господнім обличчям, бо ізраїльський цар вийшов шукати мою душу, так як ганяються за нічним вороном у горах.

21

Saul Acknowledges his Sin

And Saul said, I have sinned: return, my son David; for I will no more do thee harm, because my life was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have acted foolishly, and have erred exceedingly.

І сказав Саул: Згрішив я! Повернися, дитино Давиде, бо не вчиню тобі зла, тому що моя душа дорогоцінна сьогодні у твоїх очах. Я був безглуздим і дуже нерозумним.

22

And David answered and said, Behold the king's spear, and let one of the young men come over and fetch it.

22

І відповів Давид, і сказав: Ось спис царя. Нехай перейде один слуга і візьме його.

23

And Jehovah will render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness; for Jehovah gave thee into [my] hand this day, and I would not stretch forth my hand against Jehovah's anointed.

23

І хай Господь поверне кожному по його справедливості та його вірі, бо Господь сьогодні видав тебе в мої руки, та я не забажав накласти свою руку на Господнього помазаника.

24

And behold, as thy life was highly esteemed this day in mine eyes, so let my life be highly esteemed in the eyes of Jehovah, that he may deliver me out of all distress.

24

І ось, так, як сьогодні твоя душа прославилася в моїх очах, так нехай прославиться моя душа перед Господом, і нехай Він покриє мене та вирве мене з усякого болю.

25

And Saul said to David, Blessed be thou, my son David: thou shalt certainly do [great things], and shalt certainly prevail. And David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.

25

І промовив Саул до Давида: Сину, ти благословенний; ти справді все здійсниш [1] і неодмінно матимеш успіх [2]. І Давид пішов своєю дорогою, а Саул повернувся до свого місця.
