David and the Philistines

And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul will despair of me to seek me any more within all the limits of Israel, and I shall escape out of his hand.

І сказав Давид у своєму серці, промовляючи: Тепер переданий буду одного дня в руки Саула, і мені не буде добра, якщо не врятуюся в землі филистимців, адже Саул не облишить шукати мене в усіх околицях Ізраїля, і не врятуюся з його руки.

And David arose and passed over, he and the six hundred men that were with him, to Achish, the son of Maoch, king of Gath.

І Давид піднявся, а з ним — чотириста чоловік, і пішов до Анхуса, сина Аммаха, царя Ґета.

And David abode with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household; David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jizreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal's wife.

І осів Давид з Анхусом у Ґеті, він і його мужі, кожен зі своїм домом, і Давид, і обидві його жінки — Ахінаам, єзраелітка, та Авіґея, колишня жінка Навала кармилійського.

And it was told Saul that David had fled to Gath; and he sought no more for him.

Саулові сповістили, що Давид утік у Ґет, тож він не продовжував більше його шукати.

And David said to Achish, If now I have found favour in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some country-town, that I may abide there; for why should thy servant abide in the royal city with thee?

І сказав Давид Анхусові: Якщо ж твій раб знайшов милосердя у твоїх очах, нехай же дадуть мені місце в одному з міст, що в країні, і поселюся там. І навіщо твій раб перебуває з тобою в місті царя?

And Achish gave him Ziklag that day; therefore Ziklag belongs to the kings of Judah to this day.

І він дав йому в той день Селак. Через це Селак належав цареві юдейському — аж до цього дня.

And the time that David abode in the country of the Philistines was a year and four months.

І час, упродовж якого Давид перебував у країні филистимців, складав рік і чотири місяці.

And David and his men went up and made a raid upon the Geshurites, and the Gerzites, and the Amalekites: for those were of old the inhabitants of the land, as thou goest to Shur, and as far as the land of Egypt.

І ходив Давид і його мужі, і нападали на всіх у Ґесірі та в Амаликіті. І ось земля була заселена тими, які прийшли від Ґелампсура, міст огороджених стінами, — аж до Єгипетської землі.

And David smote the land, and left neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, and the oxen, and the asses, and the camels, and the apparel, and returned, and came to Achish.

І він громив землю, і не залишав при житті ні чоловіка, ні жінки. Якось він захопив отари, стада, ослів, верблюдів і одяг, і вони повернулися, і прийшли до Анхуса.

So Achish said, Have ye not made a raid to-day? And David said, Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the Kenites.

А Анхус запитав Давида: На кого ви сьогодні напали? Давид же сказав Анхусові: На південь Юдеї і на південь Єсмеґи, і на південь Кенезії.

And David left neither man nor woman alive, to bring [them] to Gath, for he said, Lest they should tell of us, saying, So did David. And such was his custom as long as he abode in the country of the Philistines.

Та я живими не залишив ні чоловіка, ні жінки, щоб не сповістили в Ґеті, кажучи собі: Щоб не донесли на нас у Ґеті, повідомляючи: Давид таке чинить! І це — його діяльність усі дні, які Давид перебував на рівнині филистимців.

And Achish trusted David, saying, He has made himself utterly odious among his people Israel; and he shall be my servant for ever.

Тож Анхус дуже довіряв Давидові, кажучи: Він зовсім осоромлений [1] у своєму народі, в Ізраїлі, тож буде мені рабом навіки.
